Government immigration announcement sees skilled migrant, parent categories reopen
The Government is opening up two more categories for migrants to become residents as it seeks to reconnect with the world after the pandemic and fill major workforce shortages.
Immigration Minister Michael Wood has announced today the skilled migrant visa category, that was paused during the height of Covid-19 and border closures, will reopen along with the parents category from mid-November.
Consultation is also going to begin on a new uncapped and “simplified” points system for migrants that fall outside existing programmes.
This follows the Green List, which provided pathways to residency for the 85 most-needed professions.
…yay, more International Student Scams, more exploited migrant workers and more hyper tourism – all the things that fucked us last time around.
Yay.
We are so addicted to a low wage economy that we will risk triggering a spike in unemployment to capitulate to big industry who are reliant on cheap labour.
This will see unemployment rise as big industry dump Kiwi workers for their cheaper imports and we will see the impact of this next year as the recession kicks off.
To inoculate the country against these dynamics, we urgently need the Fair Pay Agreements to ensure the imported workforce are unionised.

The fair pay agreements have been tied to the income insurance scheme in a power play by the CTU designed to ensure that PSA members can have a gold plated holiday every time they are made redundant. The problem with this is that a tax on workers, which fairly or not is how this scheme will be characterized is not palatable to the electorate generally and I argue that in fact it will sink the fair pay agreements as the heat comes on next year leading up to the election. I say this because the CTU are not interested in mass unionism as it dilutes their power base. The PSA who dominate the CTU push their own indolent self interested agenda. They are not interested in the concerns of workers in the private sector and do not want them to have a seat at the table. So when the blowtorch gets applied to the PSA they will tank the whole deal. This rotten self interested agenda crawling that the middle class unions persue is actively damaging the movement at a time when the need to stand together becomes more urgent by the day.
Well Labour’s plan to cut migrant workers out of the equation has worked really well so far especially if you were a vegetable or fruit grower that enjoyed seeing their harvest going to waste or someone waiting for a bus that does not turn up or happy to have millions of dollars tied up in machinery standing idle. The jobs are there for anyone who really wants to work.Obviously for some reason 180000 do not want to work for whatever reason. Welfare need to up their game increase staff to allow each and everyone of these people an interview to find out why they rather be on a benefit than working. Too many are slipping through the cracks and being abandoned as hopeless and these people can be manipulate to do wrong . Mental health can be the cause and a worthwhile job can help to improve their depression.

The RSE indentured labour scheme ground on nearly uninterrupted through the last three years, with the indentured first denied any assistance despite being trapped here, then the scheme being restarted as soon as possible. Any grower that sowed more than they could harvest maybe needs to reassess the positive benefits of their business model before victim shaming their slaves. Moving on to the broken and soulless race to the bottom that is the contracting model governing bus network operation that result in pay so poor that no operator can attract and retain sufficient staff, like an ouroboros of shitness. Less regulation in the farming sector means there the issue is less systemic, more about surge capacity in specialist roles. Same issue with infrastructure and heavy transport. The thing there is if you train people and pay properly for the role they undertake, most of the time you will not struggle to attract and retain people. Problem is trev, that as a rule bosses in this country have been on the road to giving zero fucks about the pay and conditions since the nineties, aided and abetted by successive governments of both Purple parties.
Yeah, agree with ya Leftoruim we only have to look at the hospitality area most are paid the minimum wage and NZ businesses wonder why they can’t get decent workers when you’re on your fucken feet all day and people expect you to be their slave despite them being rude and impatient. I see some cafes have reduced their products but raised their prices bloody rip off. I buy a 6$ cup of coffee daily my main luxury as I don’t drink alcohol or smoke, so I do expect my coffee to be top notch. And if I do buy other foods, I expect it to be good quality otherwise I don’t hesitate to tell them face to face.
Labour need to make sure they aren’t letting in parents that have one foot in the grave. If this happens we as a country will pay for it as our health system is not looking after us. So why would we want someone to bring an elderly parent in when we have to bear the burden. If they want their whanau here they need to ensure they have insurance or enough money to pay for there upkeep otherwise go back to your own country as this is not fair. Also our old people’s homes are struggling from relying on foreign labour for far too long.
Being an immigrant myself I don’t have an axe to grind BUT we have no housing/infrastructure and only low pay mcJobs for these people…my argument wouldn’t be ‘halt’ but it would be well qualified and when we can accommodate them…..we don’t need more takeaway cooks and supermarket workers.

Personally I am all for more immigrants coming to live and work here. I feel we have a duty to share our great nation with other nationalities. There’s also plenty of scope to introduce additional immigrant visa categories. The only issue I’ve ever had with our immigration policy was during both the Helen Clark and John Key terms where obscene wealth equated to residency, which is very unfair. Jacinda Ardern and her team have been moderate in their immigration policy and I appreciate it, although it does not mean that I will necessarily be voting for her and Labour in the 2023 general election.
Stopping immigration was populist politics in the moment, the only rational being the crunching of the infrastructure. Everyone wants to come here. Let’m in, and look after our poor like NZers.
