Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki lashes out at queer MPs
Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki has lashed out during a Sunday service about Aotearoa’s queer representation in Parliament.
Tamaki, who apologised in 2019 for blaming gay people for causing earthquakes, told churchgoers on Sunday “we’re in a sick society” for the 12 queer MPs Aotearoa has elected to Parliament.
“The media globally said New Zealand now has the queerest Parliament, and I’m like ‘I’m not proud of that, I’m not proud of that’.”
By percentage, Aotearoa’s Parliament became the most rainbow in the world following the election in 2020 – with 10 percent of 120 MPs being queer.
Tamaki’s attack came moments after he welcomed “the alphabet community” to join his newly launched Freedoms NZ political party, and told his followers “we cannot keep being nasty”.
But Tamaki doubled down in his attack on the queer community, and questioned what the word ‘queer’ meant and repeated his regular line “I’m into diversity but not perversity”.
What exactly is Tamaki saying here?
That Parliament shouldn’t have Gay people in it?
That’s exactly what he is implying.
Our cherished universal suffrage has come too far to go backwards.
Banking gay MPs would be as unthinkable as denying women the vote.
Or an abortion.
The gay community is our community, they are our friends, our whanau, our comrades. There is no gay member of Parliament who got elected because they are gay, they were elected because they are the best representatives of their communities! They just happen to also be gay!
Parliament is the ultimate meritocracy, those gay members of the NZ Parliament stand there because they are the top 120 people who should be our representatives! What Brian is alarmingly calling for in such an off hand manner is that they be purged from Parliament for nothing more than their sexuality.
He is surfing the animosity generated by the toxic Trans debate and manipulating that into a nakedly homophobic agenda, and seeing as he has now crossed over from Religious Quack to political movement, such an openly crass attack on the gay community is a political event.
We should in no way shape or form tolerate political homophobia or the expression of possible policy against them.
When he’s a Religious Quack, Brian has the protection of freedom of religion, but as a political movement, his homophobia can’t be protected by that.
Now he’s a political bigot who’s extremist hate must be resisted.
There is no place in a modern progressive democracy for political homophobia.

Lord Brian’s days are numbered. He is a 62ish year old Maori after all (life expectancy 73ish). He appears to be grasping at power and prestige in a last ditch effort to be glorified in the flesh before he putters out completely, along with similarly aged/minded old school out dated self serving arseholes. No amount of his gathered tithes nor zombie followers can save him from him his own demise. It’ll be bye bye Brian before too long and he’ll be remembered as just one of the few NZ cult leaders of our time, along with Bert Potter and Neville Cooper aka Hopeful Christian. Brian Tamaki is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things but it is irritating to have this man and his followers lobby against the government, gay citizens, and other groups of people. It’s also irritating for the media to give this man airtime, for decades now, whenever he decides to spout hurtful comments about minority groups. Making his followers address him as Bishop Tamaki when there are underlying issues in his personal life, eg anger, while all the time he’s pointing the finger at certain groups of people, is hypocritical.

Let’s face it our parliament is probably no more “queer” than many in reality. It’s just fortunate that people in NZ feel (on balance) like they can be more open about their orientation.
Just like the previous election, both he and National will fade into oblivion.
In the meantime other church leaders like the Arise ones have gapped it with all the tihings now living in million dollar homes with millions of dollars of assets, one can do this when one does not get ones self involved in politics.

I’m not a fan of his.
So, for the first time in The history of the colonisation, we have a parliament that openly reflects the general mix within the electorate.. That’s It?…. Fuck me!! He’s not got the wind because it’s now “not okay” to shame someone into staying “indoors” has he?.
