The truth about climate change that we refuse to accept

Cyberattack targets sea level rise website on the day of launch

A new website showing detailed projections of sea level rise around New Zealand was targeted by a cyberattack on its first day live.

NZ SeaRise was inaccessible for most of the day, coming back online on Monday around 4:30pm.

NZ SeaRise project co-leader Professor Tim Naish of Victoria University of Wellington said it was disappointing to be targeted so soon.

The fear generated by the truth about climate change coming out is remarkable and as stubborn as a Qanon anti-vaxxer in a library.

The system has to tell people that we can ‘fix’ climate change because if the terrifying reality was clear to us, none of the worker ants would go to work.

The truth is that unless we develop a technology that can remove CO2 rom the air, there is no ‘fixing’ climate change, there is only rapid adaptation.

Let’s have some stats.

Normally it takes hundreds of thousands of years for C02 to build up in Earths atmosphere to the levels we have now, and when it builds up to those levels we get enormous global temperature changes over the space of decades that make it impossible for species to adapt fast enough.

The truth is that we have increased C02 in a couple of centuries when it normally requires hundreds of thousands of years. We have no real idea what magnitude of damage and speed of climate events that will create and cause.

Th Earth continues to heat, methane releases from the Ocean and thawing permafrost creates an enormous spike in temperatures, all the fresh water of Greenland melts, the fresh water pouring into the Labrador seas shuts down the global oceanic current, that in turns freezes the Northern Hemisphere solid.

We go from incredibly hot from a decade of methane and then we go into a new ice age, most species can’t adapt to that type of change.

The reality is most people don’t ‘get’ how big the climate crisis really is, how enormous the impact of endlessly pumping pollution into our biosphere causes and how much of an existential threat that poses us all as a species.

The IPCC report has always infamously been conservative and underplayed or simply ignored the impacts of naturally occurring feedback loops that once crossed represent  tipping points from which no technological advance can mitigate.

The methane release from melting permafrost threatens to trigger a warming event that we can’t escape and will bring with it catastrophic change for which only radical adaptation can possibly cope with.

What is most concerning about our response to the Covid epidemic (which is exacerbated by overpopulation and bio-habitat collapse), is that these extraordinary events that we are totally ill equipped to cope with are all occurring at a time of relative peace. How would these services cope with a plethora of events erupting at climate crisis speed on numerous fronts?

We can barely cope with the first wave of disruptions, how on earth will we cope when the enormity of events eclipse these small ones?

The ever growing war in the Ukraine being the perfect example.

My contention is that in a future like that voters will throw their weight behind any party promising radical proposals.

That’s why I argue that Fortress Aotearoa is simply a matter of when not if.

The current political spectrum in New Zealand can not radically adapt fast enough to adopt the changes we must make if we are to survive the climate crisis. It will require a radical Political Movement that elects a Party to implement Fortress Aotearoa…

  • Move away from intensive farming and look to become domestically self sustainable in terms of food.
  • Immediately ban all water exports.
  • Empower local communities to make local decisions and set up resilience programs.
  • 5 year Parliamentary term so Governments can actually plan for change.
  • Upper and Lower House (Upper House 50-50 split between Māori & Pakeha that can hold up legislation if unhappy about Treaty issues)
  • Massive investment into R&D from Government with the understanding research is to benefit NZ first before sold offshore.
  • Large scale increase in Navy, Army & Airforce.
  • Mass limiting of tourism numbers with huge increased tourist taxes.
  • Only citizens can vote.
  • Sustainable immigration and an end to exploitative migrant workers.
  • Resettlement Programms for all pacific island neighbours.
  • Increase refugee in take to 10 000 per year
  • Fully funded public services focused on real welfare of people.
  • Mass Green housing rebuild.
  • 100% renewable energy for entire country.
  • Massive tree planting across previous farming land.
  • Wholesale re-write of state services act to end commercial values.
  • Investment into basic pharmaceutical production.
  • Financial transaction tax
  • Wealth tax
  • Multinational tax
  • Inheritance tax
  • Capitalist monopolies in energy, transport and finance have to be brought into public ownership and control. They should be subject to democratic plans drawn up by the whole community. Workers should have much stronger decision making powers within them.
  • All economic sectors to be made take steps needed to decarbonise the economy as much as is needed to reach zero net emissions by 2030.
  • Free and frequent public transport on electric buses and/or trains in all main cities.
  • Health care and education for life should be free and universally accessible.
  • Welfare, pensions, child allowances, should be universal wherever possible.
  • Public housing at fixed and affordable rents should be a right of all not just the desperately poor.
  • All workers should have a right to a job and the workweek reduced with no loss of pay to make that possible.
  • Local communes should be supported for control and delivery of as many functions of the centralised state as possible – including housing, education, health care.
  • Local communes to support cooperative forms of production of food, solar and wind energy,  electric transport, and media.

On a rapidly warming planet, NZ will increasingly be the life boat for Earth and the tyranny of our distance will become our blessing.

Pretending that we can ‘stop’ the climate crisis cascade is sophistry, we require radical reform and adaptation now.

The inevitability of Fortress Aotearoa and the fierce nationalism it would generate are merely waiting for the spark.

  1. The political truth about climate change is that almost no voter wants to face the massive changes to our lifestyles that ending the use of cheap reliable fossil fuel will mean.

Even the average Green voter wants to believe that recycling and buying an EV will be enough. Other people can do more of the changing, if required.

    • My Great Grandfathers helped build New Zealand by going to war and building there own homes with barely even a primary school education so I want to know how you set your prices?

So what you deserve more because you’ve worked a little? And all of a sudden your demanding more from less? Why?

How did you set your price because there’s a difference between price and what the market will pay.

So how much is it for submission that’s what I want to know how much?

  2. To implement all those plans requires what is missing from the list.

Social cohesion. No sign of that happening anytime soon, if ever.

That 50/50 split in the upper house is not democratic. Why Pakeha and Maori only? No other ethnic group need apply?

Better split in parliament would be a lower house made up from list MP’s and an upper house made up from electorate elected. MP. No to five year terms, absolutely not. If one cant get consensus, with other parties, in three years to implement policies, extending this out to five years wont make a blind bit of difference.

Upper and lower house elections to be staggered. So an election every eighteen months to keep the politburo in check.

No point in having local empowerment of the people if the central soviet can ride roughshod over the local wishes. Look at the nationalisation of Watercare in Auckland. Did the locals get a say? No. telling them they will still “own” the infrastructure but not the benefits derided from the ownership is a Claytons ownership. Not worth a cent.

Wealth taxation will be interesting. Will Maori, churches, etc. be included?

    • You miss represent what the 50\50 upper house split represents. The principal of that is kind of like when parliament was in acting laws to confescate Maori land they had no representation to stop that. So if there’s a 50/50 split Maori get the chance to say hang on this legislation is bullshit and it builds on the principles of The Treaty.

Why is this important because what Pakeha is not will to do, Maori is willing to do it.

  3. The truth is that NZ can do stuff all to change what is happening as it’s driven from India, China and the US.

We should drop the useless and frankly embarrassing ’best in show’ mindset, accept that we are just a little second world nation in the middle of nowhere and start focusing on mitigation and damage prevention.

Nothing we do to reduce emissions or the like will make any difference whatsoever other than make us all poorer and for what? So those Green voters luxuriating in their Grey Lynn and Herne Bay mansions can feel virtuous whilst they take Tarquin and Arabella to Farro’s in their Tesla to buy organic artichokes. All the while the rest of us go under financially as the unnecessary taxes the likes of Auckland council want to impose hit the poorest hardest.

    • Fortress Aotearoa isn’t preventive. It’s prescriptive.

Martyn Bomber Bradbury knew that the disinformation campaign against climate change worked so well that it was mathematically impossible to stop climate change atleast 5 years ago. How do I know well because I was one of the first to bring it all up (there were others all arguing and Bomber put it all into coherent words for us)

So Bomber knew climate change want going to be prevented so he published a prescriptive set of policy reform designed to adapt to complex and evolving social, economic and environmental models and evolve for the purposes of making the proceeding generations comfortable and have a better deal than the previous ones.

Basically I don’t really care how the World ends because under Fortress Aotearoa you could choose things like a supernova, dwarf star or what ever.

        • sigh. yet another word salade that’s starting to mean nothing: “it’s not. Lear to me.”

How old are you 12yrs old?

The only thing that’s not clear is your Gronk mind.

We need to create a word for the process of losing all meaning via contact with internet politics.

  4. Agree with most of what you say. Sad that we have been betrayed by the leaders and MP’s of the Green Party in particular – who are more interested in pursuing the woke elite agenda of identity politics as the number one issue, rather than protecting planet earth for all.

  5. Some items on your list make sense some not so but if they all came to fruition would it make any difference to climate change as China and India open new coal powered power stations weekly and the population of these 2 giants move towards a perceived better standard of living

  6. “Pretending that we can ‘stop’ the climate crisis cascade is sophistry, …”

    Absolutely God damned right!

But that doesn’t stop the bike lobby for example wanting to pour our money into their hobby’s by using climate change as the reason, now does it?

    • It’s more likely that rail is sunk below ground because land prices is likely to be way way way to expensive and tunneling don’t cost government except for construction costs so construction costs are relitive to land prices so just tunnel.

Free public transport opens up roads and bike and walkways should be raised to prevent the risk of death and injury in super high density urban environments.

  7. I have accepted that climate changes. Tomorrow it will rain and the wind will blow. Then the sun will shine again and then the wind will blow in some rain. Which is pretty annoying as it’s not fun to go fishing in the wind and rain.

  8. The bottom line is that the Climate Change Show is a first world problem. The billions in Africa, India, China etc don’t give two hoots about your privilege of cheering on Greta, while they’re trying to feed themselves and their family over a charcoal fire.

You’re thinking about the sadness of maybe moving house in 50 years (if the modelers worse case scenario happens and let’s face, modelers aren’t much trusted in these days) while they’re thinking about their next meal. Boo hoo for you.

If you are really serious about climate change the answer is very simple.

Get people out of poverty as quickly as possible… That’s it.

And I’m not talking about the ‘oh woe me, I can only afford KFC twice a week’ kind off poverty, I’m taking about getting 3rd World Agrarian into manufacturing as quickly as possible. Yes a bit of coal maybe burnt on the way, but the sooner people don’t have to worry about their empty bellies, then and only then will they have time to look towards the future and plan differently.

And frankly I can’t see it happening within the ‘modelers’ time frame, so if you believe in it, we’re screwed

    • When the Himalayan glaciers melting that would mean that the great rivers of China and India which the Himalayas feed or not be able to support a population of 2 billion people. That is when open warfare will be necessary.

  9. as coastal properties become uninsurable and insurance companies equity levels are allowed to be so low…who will pick up the bill when those nice middle class folks homes get flooded…you will.

    • Nope, the insurers. If they don’t then the silly folks like the Obama’s who built on the sea level can take their medicine

      • Here comes the nope nope nope community, can’t do this, can’t do that.

I mean we will always get the likes of The Parnell Property Owners crowd coming out hard against strategicly important infrastructure community.

Just can’t listen to the likes of them.

  10. What gender is the weather? Does it have a name? What sex is it? Is it a woman/female or a man or something in between? Is it known by a letter from the alphabet?

These are very important things to understand these days as to not get confused or accused of not been sensitive to others and other things that make our lives whole, ay?

Is Climate Change real or made up to do a bit of Laundering of Grwen Washn?

  11. Martyn has a very optimistic view of the other nations around this Earth. Does anybody really think that the 2 superpowers (USA, China) & even our Australian mates(?) will stand by & watch while their countries burn & we have our little fortress Aotearoa? While I obviously disagree with the hundreds of thousands of years I agree with him that this earth’s future is finite in its present state.

    • No we’re not, all this doom and gloom underestimates the inventiveness of mankind and our ridiculous ability to adapt and survive.

It’s only water – look at Holland!

    • Fortress Aotearoa isn’t meant to save us from the storm of abrupt climate change its supposed to be a multi thousand year life boat we can ride it out in.
