Business and government go off in the lifeboats or hand in hand away from the sun and not to it as in cliches. A marriage made in heaven, ‘we’ll piss in your pockets if you do in ours.’ Waterproof, those pockets will provide them with the little liquid needed in emergencies. Our government has already shown it will abandon the people it was partly set up to serve and National is sucking up to its people with tax cuts to feed their addiction to excess money and other people’s rights. Keep Lord Rutherford as our symbol ‘We haven’t got much money so we’ll have to think.’ Also he was frugal and known for carrying out experiments on a shoestring if necessary. I think I’ve got that right but it’s from memory.

It is here, now. The waves are already washing over us, yet we’re all continuing with business as usual, eyes firmly closed and hands over ears.
Don’t believe it’s here? Just ask the people in Gisborne, or Westport, who have seen their homes and roads washed out in what is cunningly described as “100 year weather events” (wink, wink, winketty wink).
There are families in Westport who’ve now been washed out TWICE by these magical “100 year” floods. Does that mean they don’t have to worry for another …200 years now? And do they just re-build again, and again, and again in the same flood-prone areas, a third, fourth, or however many times?
The govt needs to start right now enacting a climate emergency plan for all those families who are living on flood plains, on riversides and beach fronts. An assessment needs to be carried out as to which parts of Aotearoa are most likely to be safe, in the face of future events, and to set aside sufficient land on which flood affected people will be able to re-build and live in relative safety. If we don’t secure such areas now, the profiteers will have them tied up and out of reach in the future, leaving devastated families with nowhere to go.
And there will have to be help and planning and money and collaboration and discussions with the group neighbourhood and individuals but encourage a group response where possible and they can be rehoused in one multistorey that’s livable and practical.
Don’t be like Nelson whose rah rah mayor loves a riverside site floodable at high tide, for a new $44 million library – estimate – books need dry conditions and are not easy to shift. It doesn’t wash with me.
scraping off the mind most of the visions we have had is necessary. I think Wellington has a similar brainfart about its library. Go for future, go for modelling, go for practical, expect extremes. This is the time of the ‘phony war’. Say three times ‘We are not entitled’ and click your shoes three times to reach enlightenment..
Yes, what is it about Councils and libraries. A new BoP one is nearly ocean-front. Council are really testing the storm-gods. So much for the books, history, artworks and taonga that are stored there. (Computers can be replaced, the others, not so much.)

About 40 years ago an “expert: confidently predicted that small seaside west coast towns would be under water in a decade. A skeptical Jacob’s River man waited for high spring tide and painted a white ring around a port pylon at the high water mark. The township is not under water and the white ring is still waiting to be submerged. Go figure.
Thanks for being honest and realistic Martyn. I noticed you avoided putting the boot into business like some. I’m not a business man. In this country we need to do what we can to live in a more environmentally sustainable way. Destroying ourselves economically won’t help us or the world. That’s up to the US India China and parts of Europe. They have to change quickly but I’m not holding my breath. Fortress Aotearoa might work until someone takes it from us. Poking sticks at our own isn’t going to change a thing.
So ridiculous, our ‘response’ to climate change worldwide. Drawing up godly lists. I do that all the time. Mostly about my toenails. And so obvious how immediate challenges always get in the way.
Where climate change falls down and is criticisable is it’s not immediate. Bad climate change!
It’s an amusing death until the desperation (of the many people in our country with not enough) sets in. I don’t really completely trust any politician without that desperation in their life. The 35ists were dominated by it in their adult lives. I’ve had moments but not the life, my immediate neighbours in my flatblock have lived it. It is a seering difference — someone who has to imagine the people’s problems and someone who has lived through it , why the 2nd generation of middle class Labour MPs killed us dead. Not me, but the voiceless poor most and up to 80 % of us.
Thank God it was us and our fault who will see in the end of the world. Imagine the difficulties generally if it were not?
