  1. Radionz merged with TV will become a Cinderella compared to the showy, colourful, populist self-promoting television mantra. On top of that loss of gravitas and POV about what is worth noting here and in the world, and in what way. (I think of Jim Mora’s Mediawatch on Sunday morning – not Colin Peacock’s or whoever does it, and a lot about overseas, not enough about NZ and what is reported by print, radio and paper).

But further the drive to drop the Concert Programme so that the young can hear more music than already. It is part of a desire to catch the ear of the young who have been brainwashed into gluing devices to their ears, or sticking sound buds in their ears and ignoring other options. It appears that we are following trends overseas – BAU, I think it is part of the dumbing down of NZs, and we are following a path that will result in us being mere automatons energised by algorithms, as in the end of Brave New World – more than the conformists we are already.
    This from the Telegraph:
Finally, Eggheads, the quiz show, appears to have become the latest victim of the BBC’s drive to find a younger audience. Michael Hogan argues in this excellent piece that the BBC has got it all wrong in its pursuit of youth, failing to understand the universal appeal of good drama – and the lockdown viewing figures prove it.

  2. I haven’t heard this yet but it seems interesting listening to those who find that the governments hands are either tied, or busy spreading roses in the path of overseas private equity and corporations that give the appearance of money moving in our economy., though unfortunately it doesn’t spray around far – the shower rose is blocked!

Technologist and climate activist Jon Leighton writes about the climate and ecological crisis, and the folly of putting our faith in activism or technological solutions to deliver us from these crises. Instead he is now focusing on re-localisation and re prioritising real, tangible skills and becoming less dependent on the monetary economy.

But we are showing initiative and may do better with weeds, and brush aside these effete gummint types. Interesting PM Ardern telling off business The Warehouse which is or was a NZ venture to the volume department store. Of course they don’t have it easy what with places like KMart doing well and staying open 8 to midnight. But I don’t think that any politicians know about business except the farmers.

Farmers have found ways to get perks and the only reason they don’t get more help from government now is that they have too much pride to admit they are ordinary people. This ordinary person is not too proud to get help and I have been grateful for what I have received when needed. But not all have opportunities and the government under neolib is getting meaner, everything has to be reviewed, can’t rely on even getting basics. Though lately some of the top salaries in government have been cut as a gesture the country needs to be revitalised, and if you can get started for yourself trying something different, the opportunities might start coming your way. It is interesting hearing others’ stories.

  3. Credit where due, and carrying on from my contribution yesterday on OM (8th may)
    Being relentlessly positive:
Congratulations Commissioner Andrew Coster on your listening and perceptive skills:

On the down side, understandably JA’s relentless positivity appears to have had a slip after having to do everything, and carrying the dead wood all by herself.
Expressing ‘ANGER’ at the Warehouse, at least she managed to hold herself back before she became similarly angered at Kiwirail and Ear NuZull; the two-tiered, deserving and undeserving bennies; duplicity over immigrants and the deserving and undeserving application of rules; and b-b-b-b-broadcasting and m-m-m-m-media that’s nearing collapse and may well contribute to the kind and transformational giving way to the selfish and vested interests come election time.

If she gets a moment, it’s probably time to give some of her colleagues a bit of a pep talk

    • Stick with it OwT there are lots of hidden pressures behind the scenes on the Government, and they have to be anxious enough to do something, while confident that they’ll win through if they take a risk and stretch somewhat. Do you remember after MMP came in and Alamein Kopu being the one person who would hike the vote for National and get their laws through? Jenny Shipley had to keep on side with her. National can appear to be flexible while they are setting up systems that will proceed for them successfully.

Labour not so good, can get sidetracked by noble causes. While we were setting a good anti-nuclear example to the world, we got distracted and our economy was being wrapped up in brown paper and bargained over in what we thought was just another meeting.
