  1. The govt is planning a shake up or shake down of the Tourism Industry in NZ. There are two aspects of this that I hope they will invest some time, thought, planning, effort and resources into, before they roll it out again. Govt plans major shake up for tourism

    1. This time around they need to prepare first. In particular, all aspects of safety, hygiene and infrastructure, and much stronger protection of our native environment.

This includes having safer roads and stricter regulations around international drivers – ensuring they understand our road rules. It also includes upgrading all our wastewater systems and ensuring there are adequate public toilets (and rubbish bins) all around the country. Heavier fines for littering may be needed, too.

    2. Rather than tourism being a 100% in-person visit, for the longer term it would be great to see development of online tourist ventures, – where people could visit all the sightseeing places close-up, but on line, in new and amazing ways.

  2. The Education Package is brilliant – absolutely the best way to go!!

It includes dedicated tv channels and shipping out thousands of devices … Excellent.

  3. Two of Aotearoa’s most iconic inhabitants have re-emerged after several hundred years:

Two tuatara hatchlings have recently been sighted at Orokonui Ecosanctuary by University of Otago researchers and are the first to be seen since adult tuatara were released at the ecosanctuary in 2012.

Although tuatara hatchlings have been reported in fenced ecosanctuaries on the North Island, these hatchlings may be the first to hatch as part of a viable tuatara population on Te Waipounamu (the South Island) for several hundred years.

The hatchlings at Orokonui were found earlier this year under small strips of roofing material by Jade Christiansen, an undergraduate student working on a Te Ngaru Paewhenua: Māori and Pacific Science Summer Studentship at the University of Otago.

“My hands were shaking,” Ms Christiansen says. “I was very nervous, yet very excited. The hatchlings can be surprisingly lively.” Full story here

  4. How come Countdown seems to be the supermarket to go to for Radionz? Now we hear that they have chartered a plane bringing in face masks and have donated 200,000, Countdown is owned by Woolworths with an Australian parent. Foodstuffs is the NZ supermarket chain. Listening to RadioNZ I never hear anything about them. There seems to be a PR sweep by Countdown.
This from 2/4 and I have heard detailed interviews since including tonight Wed Apr.8/20.
Countdown says demand is still high in supermarkets, as people continue to stock up on food.

“Our supply chain was extremely destabilised by the past months shopping, which has caused the impact we’re still working through now,” Countdown’s general manager of corporate affairs, safety and sustainability Kiri Hannifin said.

Also heard that their staff were denied face masks after being told that they would be early in queue and it’s true that they are in a a situation of many closely moving people.
