Kāinga Ora–Homes and Communities (Kāinga Ora) was established on 1 October 2019 as a new Crown agency to transform housing and urban development throughout New Zealand. … partnering with the development community, Māori, local and central government and others on urban development projects of all sizes.

Just a thought. I have this fear that anything that the government thinks may turn out to be contentious or bad, it will slap a Maori name on it, and the feeling of dissatisfaction will transfer to Maori in general, and everything that they are trying to facilitate. Kia ora all and kia kaha too. And tangata mohio, tino mohio, when dealing with govt etc. (Incremental learning? What is Maori for smart? https://www.wordhippo.com/what-is/the/maori-word-for-1556355684145fce5e67ba749d943a180266ad90.html )

  2. Earth to @saveNZ (and Iain Lees-Galloway for that matter)

We never really completed that discussion over immigration problems/issues, but YET again we have another instance of INZ fuckwittery – admitedly they’re now trying to do their best with the resources at there disposal.
I’m just wondering when it is that I L-G will realise that the Ministry for Everything is incapable of walking and chewing gum at the same time.
Everything that gets prioritised – most recently its this:
    https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/programmes/morningreport/audio/2018734434/govt-locked-in-talks-on-overhauling-residence-visa-programme
will be at the expense of something else.
The Ministry for Everything will be patting themselves on the back for some high profile prosecutions over worker exploitation by exploitative arsehole employers (Hark! the bloody Herald Angels sing), and slavery.

Nothing will get better over the medium to long term however – the clue should probably have been if the fact that the whole bugger’s muddle was a wet dream resulting from Messrs Joyce and Coleman wankery.

Doesn’t really matter whether ‘officials’ are now trying to be all concerned, ethical and arse greasing toward their Munsters or whether they’re well versed in “best practice” and platitudinal excusery. They do not deliver, and cannot deliver (ethically and with transformational kindness) in any way under the structure and organisational culture in which they operate.
There are probably some in the place that still believe in the potential for automated systems providing all the various risk factors according to a sophisticated spreadsheet (all the while with a full INTRAY).
Still others who stood by and tolerated some of their work colleagues (such as a Casson) without saying a bloody thing.
And even after its all superficially tickety-boo, one wonders how the value of a ‘skilled’ immigrant will be determined – certainly NOT with any value placed on the Green credentials of someone we should be envious of.

By the way – I notice the new Christchurch City Council CEO has had what is a comparatively minor glitch in the proceedings, and as far as I know, is now ensconced in the city – willing to demonstrate (and probably lecture us all) on how brilliant, entrepreneurial and aspirational she is (as if this plucky little colony that punches above its weight didn’t have anybody suited to the role – and at much less cost)

    • As usual happy for any ideas OnceWasTim, we both seem to agree that what is happening with immigration is not working! Seems to be attracting the worst migrants who get residency and then go on to commit crimes or do labour scams while honest migrants with great skills are somehow disadvantaged through the process.

Again it seems to be the NZ neoliberal bums on seats approach (not quality) and get as many applications as possible, rather than weeding it down on the applicable criteria and having strict quality control on the actual quality of people coming to NZ on visas.

So now every food worker/ retail worker/ labourer/mediocre academic foreign student with limited English and crim seems to want to apply to come to NZ blocking up the entire system for the people NZ wants!

      • Yep, well I’ve said previously, I’ve absolutely no sympathy for any of the agencies under the aegis of MoBIE (the Minsitry of Everything) that deal with Immigration, Border Protection, Worker exploitation and licencing of advisers, or indeed those trying to make complaints. It was another Joyce vanity brain fart that effectively industrialised it all.

        – Feeding people through ANSCO skill shortage lists that were archaic, out of date and didn’t take account of regional differences, and shoddy PTEs (Big fail also NZQA)
        – Not properly monitoring agents that meant the good legit ones got tarred with the same brush as the charlatans – even fraudsters.
        – Making SFA effort to clamp down on worker exploitation or take it seriously until recently. And now almost bragging about the successes when they prosecute arsholes when the same people were assuring us they had enough Labour Inspectors just prior to the last election
        – Cutting back on offshore presence in places where scams and rorts are normal, and then not even making any attempt to warn the vulnerable in those places (simple newspaper advertising/TV as a start)
        – Not doing anything about over-stayers abusing others (sexually on occasion) even when reported more than once
        – Procarastinating and finding feeble excuses to deny visas to legitimate immigrants and generally putting more effort into spin and bullshit than into the job they’re supposed to be doing.
        – Employing power-tripping racist(s) [ IF colleagues weren’t aware of it, then they also aren’t up to the job where they failed to do anythiing about it for so long ]

Admittedly I L-G had a humongous job to try and tackle it all and has made some progress but a lot of time and political capital has been wasted and I’m not sure the extent to which they realise how many lives have been destroyed in the process.

Actually, its not just that Immigration and Labour should be pulled away from a Ministry that has a business focus and culture (at the very least), but that immigration functions themselves should be separated (Visa approvals and Border Protection and enforcement).
They’ve effectively turned people into a commodity to be exploited for the purpose of an earn. And now they feign concern at what’s been going on.

      • Actually, the moment I submitted that reply to you @SaveNZ, Aljazeera just broadcast the ILO ad “Face Up To Forced Labour”.
Let’s not pretend this lil ‘ole colony of A/NZ that punches above its weight is any better than what’s been going on elsewhere in the World, even if officials want to dress it up as “best practice”. The example you or I could provide, let alone the likes of legit Immigration Agents, Unions and Worker’s Rights advocates are now far too many to swallow that spin!

  4. Can’t find your obituary of Mike Moore anymore where I had things to say. Why close comments anyway? The best thing for the Left is to win truly no matter the years, not bowing endlessly to the next 1,2, 3 years, where we went down since the rich took over. Though the 35ists were too desperate by then, hence now.

Zilch. Bryce Edwards’s ‘Political Round-Up’ is out of action — where he could talk about the genuine Left reaction to Moore’s death. The 3 big Left blogs haven’t discussed this seminal occasion deeply. A nail on our coffin lid was Nat Rad’s LEFT (!) representative describing ME, ME, ME alone, of all insignificant dubieties, as ‘the looney Left’ for suggesting Moore betrayed the working class, because just about no other commenters thought it worth talking about him one way or the other. The official story devastated me on all levels. That it could be told into our faces and not even the Left reacted.

Have you all agreed not to talk about it, because it appears to me so. Which would suggest you put short term politics over the long-term.

  5. Pro populi. The only role for the Left, particularly Labour who are stuck to the rat teet of being the next govt , is speaking for our truth. It’s a pulpit. That’s all. Or ideals, or worthwhile ideals, to differentiate from ’84.

Climate change makes me seem reasonable. Shirley.
