GUEST BLOG: Bryan Bruce – So… change it!

I’m really getting tired of hearing the argument from various Ministers in our government that they can’t do anything about a serious problem because it’s the law and their hands are tied.

We heard it with Eugenie Sage over water bottling and land consents. Now we are hearing the same argument about helping victims of the Christchurch mosque attacks over ACC payments to people who were mentally traumatised by that terrible event.

It’s the law – say the government shrugging their collective shoulders – the physically injured are covered by ACC but the mentally injured are not What can we do?

Answer : We elected you to be lawmakers. A central tenet of our legal system is that everyone is equal under the law. This is an unfair law – so change it!

Change the legislation so ACC is compelled to recognise that people who suffer mental trauma from a horrific event need to be considered eligible for compensation every bit as much as those who suffer physical trauma .

Prime Minister – at the World Exconomic Forum in January of this year you sat alongside Prince William and on a world stage talked about how we need to address mental health issues in our country

Where is that compassion now ?

Time to walk the talk.

  1. /agreed! It’s becoming a bit defeatist. In so many areas, one of the biggest problems is the relationship between Ministers/the gummint, even parliament and the senior ranks in the public service.
The latter really do need reminding who they are and what they’re there for at times. All an inevitable result of corpoatisation where masters of the Universe reign supreme.
An uphill battle if they genuinely want transformation and kindness. PS reform could and should have been the first thing on the agenda

    • Ekshully, we now even have some accolytes of the neo-liberal religion coming out now admitting that 80s ‘reforms’ were/are inappropriate in public service agencies that deal with the social. (I can’t ekshully be fucked finding the link right now – probably the Spinoff or somewhere like that, but cudda shudda wudda eh? )
Probably a conscience easing exercise before he karks it maybe. I thought at the time of reading it, if he was genuinely concerned, he’d be handing back a bit of the troughing that’d brought him the riches he so handsomely thought he was worthy of over the past 30 years).
Btw – it wasn’t Kenneth Douglas – COULD have been someone like a Campbell, (not of the Jesus Christ kind) though I can’t be certain

    • Yep indeed “SO DO IT” !!!!
Not sure if you’ve ever worked for the Public Service Bryan, but even under this corporatised neo-liberal shite that’s the antithesis of an administration tasked with carrying out a caring and sharing, transformational gummint – there are ways and means.
There really only is the culcha of the Sir Humphrey, and a lot of the shite could actually be by calling out non performance on KPIs, deliverables, budjit misses and so on – you know, actually calling out lacks in performance.
And even then, there’s a shorter route involving a State Services Commissioner over a cup of coffee – probably at Astoria darling!
Unfortunately it might simply be a question of our elected representatives being a little bit ‘too nice’ and lacking in an adequate bullshit detector.
Meantime, a government with good intention and far far far better than a previous junta is wasting most of its “political capital” – so much so that 2023 is off and 2020 could be in jeopardy. And CHRIST! ……… look at the alternatives if that comes to pass

  2. When my children were growing up I told them not to hesitate to use me as an excuse for something they weren’t happy about doing.

The Coalition govt is acting just like my kids – they’re not allowed to.
Really ? My kids grew up. Maybe it’s time for this government to grow up too.

  3. Untrammelled power damn it!!

Start with the water…you don’t need anything more than basic grey matter to figure this one out, but it is predicted by futurist Dr Richard Hames:

    • “By 2025 Australian politicians will realise that carbon emissions are not the main issue of concern for us. Here it is the water cycle and the destruction of the soil that are equally, if not more, important. Fresh water scarcity will be the defining Australian crisis of the 21st century.”
