The remarkable Leadership of Kiri Allan

I am an enormous fan of Labour MP Kiri Allan.

Her intelligence, wit and deep compassion mark her out for the Front Bench. She should be a Minister in training right now.

The deeply moving manner in which she has handled the news that her older brother has been involved in a murder is the kind of dignity and grace of a human being with an authentic .

Her articulation of shame and immediate aroha for the victim makes your eyes water with the sheer awfulness of this senseless act of violence.

Her intention to keep pulling this back to the victim and the wider fractures within the parts of our society that have been rubbed raw and threadbare by poverty and meth is honest, brave and humbling.

In our rush to channel anger at crime, we often miss the true scale of the reverberations through so many whanau and community. This moment of raw human tragedy is a reminder to temper our quick judgments and pause to consider all the pain from every dimension.

For me, her handling of this moment has built an already mighty person.

  1. Musō Tensei (無想転生, Literally meaning: Nil-Thought Rebirth) The ultimate secret technique of Hokuto Shin Ken. It is said that only one who embraces the true nature of sorrow can awaken its power.

  2. Yes reminds me of the dignity and bravery of John Tamihere when his brother was accused and convicted of murder

  3. She’s an amazing person… and I truly believe this new wave of Left politicians give NZers hope… When you look across to the otherside of the house I am hard pressed to find any person with such obvious ariha and mana…

  4. Kiri Allen did wrongly stray into a ‘National Party trap’ where they were telling her to use another ‘study consultant’ for the Gisborne rail study and she agreed.

That was a big mistake as the Consultant she recommended was ‘anti-rail’.

So we had to turn that train around to save our rail so to speak.

So Martyn, – she has made errors and must see the light’ of ‘listening to those among us who are at the Gisborne rail coalface’ actively trying to get the Rail to Gisborne restored to service; – after National took the funding away to maintain the line and caused all the washouts in 2012.

  5. I did not know much at all about Kiri as she was just another invisible Labour MP too me but hearing her respond to questions about this horrible situation she impressed me.
I expect too see more of her going ahead.

  6. Yes!national took the funding away but why does the pakeha population of Gisborne still continue to vote for national my family is from Tolaga bay they all use to vote for our whanaunga Parekura Horomia who they were raised with and went to school with. National have shown they don’t care about Gisborne yet people still keep tikcign their box (the Gisborne hospital sucks)

  8. Feeling, which has made Jacinda a star, without action isn’t much use. So Kiri Allen. None of our social democrat founders much expressed feeling beyond their actions. Indeed the main cost for their feeling for the people was paid by their families. Hence my enduring ambivalence about my socialist g. grandfather. For the rich the bill is paid by the trust fund, for the people it’s paid in blood. So I don’t admire feeling by itself.
