We all appreciate that Shane Jones is an enormous arsehole who uses dad jokes drenched in Boomer culture war grievance to gloss over how utterly compromised he is to his donor class, but shitting on Sir David Attenborough???
Minister for Oceans and Fisheries Shane Jones has taken a swipe at RNZ over its coverage of the sector, saying it “needs to be very careful that it never turns into an ad agency for the anti-fishing lobby”.
It was the latest attack on the state broadcaster from a Government minister, including recent comments from David Seymour criticising the decision to hire John Campbell as a co-host for Morning Report, and from Winston Peters on RNZ’s funding.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon had also cautioned Campbell, saying in an interview last month, “I’d be careful saying that John,” following a question about a potential influence of corporate interests on Government policy.
On Morning Report on Friday, Jones launched his attack on the state broadcaster for fisheries coverage, including over the decision last week for a seasonal closure to fishing for a large area of the East and South Chatham Rise, to protect orange roughy spawning areas.

Further challenged on the issue on Morning Report, with reference to a petition signed by 70,000 New Zealanders calling for an end to bottom trawling, Jones asked the public to “bear in mind” that the size of the country’s economic zone was 400 million hectares.
“These destructive images that come from Attenborough and whatnot, imported into New Zealand, are not an accurate reflection of the impact on our environment from our fishing industry,” he said.
