  1. Of course an independent inquiry into this incident is more than overdue now, it is shameful what the government is doing, pretending that they have so far relied on a questionable report by ISAF and the Afghan government or military, claiming there were no civilian casualties.

If New Zealand and its people want to be taken seriously and to act appropriately, they must appoint an independent commission or panel of sorts, to investigate matters. NO government involvement must be ensured, and at least one non New Zealand expert must be part of this. A transparent report will need to be published on the outcome.

But as we talk about Afghanistan, and about ‘imperialism’, it was not only the British and later the Soviet Union and USA that interfered in the region. The place has a very long history of other neighbouring powers seeking to claim control over the peoples, resources and their lands there. Just read a bit about the history, it is not a “nation” that can be easily reconciled and treated as one kind of people and culture, there are many cultures that existed there, and some different ethnic groups and cultures do to this day mistrust each other, and also fight each other. Afghan tribal elders and leaders, later turned “war lords” have been running the show for centuries.

Introducing our own western values may work in places like Kabul, but hardly will succeed in many regional places there.

The hard question is, shall we leave it for the weak, corrupt and unstable central government, and/or the local tribes, the Taleban and so to “sort out”, some of whom do deny girls an education, and want to send kids into Quran schools that also indoctrinate them to become jihadists?

  2. Soldiers are “mind controlled” to kill. It’s what we pay them to do. They’re trained to protect one another and achieve their targets. They, and us, buy into the propaganda that they are “liberators”. http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/the-kill-team-20110327 It takes a certain mind set for one human being to kill another, especially in a foreign county for reasons not understood. In demanding an inquiry I believe we must give our soldiers understanding and respect for indeed they know not what they do.

  3. Unfortunately soldiers are pawns in the game being played out by Governments world wide.

Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria have been absolute disasters for the USA and her allies.

The USA and her allies like the UK and NZ need to step back and have a look at whether these campaigns have been successful and have they improved living conditions and stability in these countries?

    I personally think not?
