$5 billion in carbon credits – the true cost of this Government’s slavish capitulation to farmers, gutting public transport, reneging on Irex Ferries and protecting big polluters

Government facing up to $5 billion bill over carbon credits, Treasury reveals
The Prime Minister has doubled down on his insistence that the government will not spend billions of dollars offshore to meet New Zealand’s climate commitments.
RNZ
One of the things that really does my head in about this Government is how they are told in very clear terms what the negative consequences of their policy will be and then they bloody do it anyway.
They were warned by every single organisation working with the homeless that their changes to emergency housing eligibility would result in a. tsunami of homeless, which is exactly what happened.
They were told their attacks on the Treaty would generate a backlash from Māori and that is exactly what happened.
They were warned that smashing the infrastructure pipeline that Labour had set up would result in vast job losses and a massive number of kiwis fleeing to Australia, which is exactly what is happening.
And they were told that dumping the iRex Ferries, cutting public transport, weakening water standards and weakening methane standards would cost us Billions in carbon credits!
A lo and fucking behold, $5billion is the price tag for National bending over backwards for the Big Polluters, Farmers and slashing public transport…
Treasury confirms $5 billion bill for Luxon’s climate inaction
Treasury has put a price tag on Luxon’s Government’s climate inaction, with new analysis showing it could cost up to $5 billion to buy the offshore carbon credits needed to meet New Zealand’s 2030 climate target.
“Every time Christopher Luxon has cut climate action here at home, he has increased the bill we need to pay other countries to reduce their emissions,” says Green Party Co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick.
“The Government keeps saying they will meet the Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement. We have known for about a decade doing that will require offshore mitigation, but the size of that offshore cost depends on how much we do onshore.”
“This Government has robbed us all of investment in local climate action, which could also have reduced the cost of living and built our resilience. Instead, they’ve chosen to fund new fossil fuels and increased the price we’ve got to pay other countries to do the job we could do here.”
“After consistent Green questioning, Treasury committed last year to provide updated analysis on these costs. They have. The Government is now looking at a $5 billion bill materialising by 2030.”
“It’s time for Nicola Willis to be honest. If the Government is committed to meeting our NDC, they need to show us the money.”
“If the Greens dared to pretend we would do something without budgeting for it, these guys would be screeching bloody murder. The economic incompetence and double standards here is unreal.”
“If the Government is instead secretly planning on not meeting our NDC, then they need to be honest about that. Climate commitments are baked into our free trade agreements with the United Kingdom and the European Union. If Luxon walks away from that 2030 target, he puts our trading relationships and exporters’ market access on the line too.”
“All politics aside, these are immutable facts. New Zealanders deserve a Government who operates in reality, with real solutions to reduce emissions and the cost of living, something the Greens are proud to offer,” says Swarbrick.

…and what’s the solution? It’s the exact same for the homeless they created, in that case they’ll just arrest the homeless, in this case, they’re trying to come up with an excuse to refuse paying it.
NZF and ACT just want walk away from the agreement altogether and Nicola Willis is still pretending we won’t have to pay it despite refusing to implement any idea that will actually reduce emissions!
National’s answer to any environmental questions is, “More Cows”. They are so wedded to the Dairy Industry that you can’t tell where the Dairy Farmer ends and the National MP starts.
BTW Super El Niño is coming, I can’t wait to hear the excuses from ACT, Federated Farmers, Taxpayers’ Union, ZB, The Platform, National, NZF, Fonterra, Reality Check Radio, Hobsons Pledge, NZME Dairy NZ and the rural Volk when it hits.

Why would we export $5billion to the Carbon Credit finance industry rort – that action wouldn’t mitigate global warming. The 3rd world carbon credit producers are scammers and the first world carbon credit auditors are corrupt and don’t actually do site visit audits.
For $5billion NZ could install carbon credit-producing rooftop solar on 20% of the houses in NZ.
For $5billion the govt could build five 1,000 gigawatt carbon credit-producing wind farms.
Would a left-wing government be sucked into this scam and export big chunks of NZ wealth like the right-wing govts do for the banking fraternity?
When you have promised your customers in a trade agreement that certain conditions will be followed then don’t do as promised the customers will buy from someone else or pay much less. NZ consumers might get cheaper primary products but it will be in a smaller economy so people will have less to spend also.
If NZ was to fade away completely it would be hard to measure tye different in the World’s carbon count .
This afternoon, the absolutely “DESPERATE” Willis has the gall to attack Labour and accuse them of having a shortfall of $18.2b. Is she also insane? We already know she has no aptitude for figures! She has been like a lunatic on line posting her accusations on every medium she can find. This CoC can’t help being this lying, scheming, corrupt bunch of no hopers! This from the party with ‘Unfunded’ LNG; Roads of Significance $56b – $4.4b higher than pre 2023 election forecasts; capitulation to farmers; gutting public transport; reneging on the Irex ferries; and protecting big polluters etc. She will end up with egg on her face again. She isn’t fit to be a FM – she is a complete Airhead, an utter embarrassment to us all!
Yes Patrize…i totally concur.. Nikki- No- Boats Willis looked and sounded completely unhinged this afternoon.
Add today’s weird performance to the complete trainwreck of an interview that she did on Q&A with Jake Tame last weekend and it becomes crystal clear that she is, and always has been, way out of her depth….
What National failed to do at the last election, with their rather unimaginative “Back on Track” line, was to tell the electorate that they were redirecting the tracks off the edge of a cliff….and so it has come to pass.
What Willis, in a mad flailing attempt to disguise her own ineptitude…. and disastrous policies….. is attempt to gaslight Kiwis about Labour’s policies…..she will once again …fail!
Her personal behaviour is coming across as classless, clueless, and condescending…a bad unpalatable combination…. and something that most Kiwis, who didn’t come down in the last shower, will see straight through.
Those weight loss drugs are shrinking her brain as well as her arse .
Carbon credits are just a load of BS!
There are no moves from any party to credit those who are no longer flying, driving cars and stopping dong the other things that help our country to be a greater carbon emmiter.
