Free workshops to help community in fuel crisis – Climate Justice Taranaki
Free climate transition workshops are being offered across Taranaki by Climate Justice Taranaki, helping locals respond to the growing fuel crisis and build resilience in the face of climate and economic disruption.
Fuel crisis driving urgent need for community action
“The latest war has led to fuel prices almost doubling in a few weeks and the International Energy Agency says we now face a fuel crisis worse than those in the 1970’s and 2022 combined. For some this is a shock and panic buying are causing petrol stations to empty out and the toilet paper panic has already hit Japan while companies like Blue Cap Mining in Australia are sending their workers home, much like Wattie’s and McCain’s plan to do here soon, following the sawmills last year. It won’t be long before we see more layoffs and projects fall over as industries like construction, agriculture and shipping cut budgets.” says Tuhi-Ao Bailey from Climate Justice Taranaki. “That’s why our free community climate transition workshops couldn’t come at a better time because even if this war ends tomorrow, the impacts are long-lasting and it’s likely there will be more wars until fossil fuels are unobtainable. So transition is crucial now.”
Turning crisis into community empowerment
“Amidst the gloom, our workshops are actually a fun and empowering way to bring people together to understand the science and geopolitical issues that are leading to things like extreme weather events and resource wars, but to focus on solutions and community building instead. We’ve known for decades that climate change and fossil fuel use was going to lead to all sorts of problems and generally people hope it’s later down the track but all the impacts are starting to hit us now. Unfortunately this country has not prepared for transition in time but it’s not too late. Everything we do now to reduce emissions and protect our communities and nature is super important. Every fraction of a degree of warming that we can stop is crucial, like every bullet we can stop from flying.”
What the climate workshops offer
“Our workshops focus around a Fresk card game to understand core causes and effects around climate. We then look at solutions for the causes and effects. This could be how to support affordable renewable energy production for communities or rebuilding local regenerative food and fibre markets or advocating for better public transport. It could just be how to install solar, purchase an EV and save energy at work by using kettles instead of Zip systems and improving insulation through rugs, doors, windows and curtains to save power. It could be planning tree planting and pest control projects. All our workshop facilitators have been part of building solutions in Taranaki for many years so they can discuss real examples and share contacts of experts to help participants put their plans into action. The future is what we make it and the sooner we build solutions the better it will be.”
