The stress of immense focus from the wider political spectrum at the never ending drama-dramas from Te Pati Māori has been understandable because the only way Labour beats this Government without having to bow the knee to Winston has been Labour + Green + Te Pati Māōri.
So the political damage Eru, Mariameno and Doc caused because they didn’t think Debbie, Rawiri and JT were ‘Tikanga Enough’ has been a horrifying journey for everyone who wants this Government out as the civil war they’ve ignited took the Māori Party from 7% to 2.5%.
All Eru, Mariameno and Doc have done is hand political ammunition to our enemies who painted Labour + Greens + Māori Party as unstable.
Thankfully everything has changed.
Roy Morgan has TOP at 4%.
TOP are a blue/green movement, a disrupter Party.
As cosmopolitan National voters in the city’s recoil in horror at what Luxon has allowed Seymour and Winston to get away with, they are turning to TOP in growing numbers.
Add some blue/green from the Greens themselves and suddenly Te Pati Māori drama-dramas don’t matter because the path to 51% changes radically with Labour + Greens + TOP.
Labour + Greens + TOP Government do not scare the electorate the way a Labour + Greens + Te Pati Māori Government does.
The Right also lose their biggest weapon going into the election if TOP get over 5%.
This takes the stress and power away from the never ending mud slinging at Te Pati Māori because it doesn’t matter once TOP get over 5%, because Labour + Greens will no longer need Te Parti Māori!
Look at the math.
Removing this intense attention from Te Pati Māori will allow them to heal between now and the election and put them in good stead to still have an impact by creating an MMP overhang.
At 4% in the latest Roy Morgan Poll, TOP have generated a momentum that has the most realistic chance of a sub 5% Party crossing the threshold for the first time ever.
A Labour + Green + TOP Government is finally a stable outcome that would excite those who want to rid NZ of Winston Peters and David Seymour calling the shots.
After reading the Opportunity website, I thought they’re a lot like the old-school Greens. I hope they do crack 5% this year, which is looking increasingly likely. You’re right, a sensible and considered left-leaning party getting over 5% is dangerous to the coalition. There is a danger they could pull Green voters who are looking for a more balanced & NZ oriented environmental party. Opportunity would be the first to do it from the ground up too, which is a story the media will love.
