Last election they ran huge Facebook adverts using Tobacco money to exploit fears of ram raids.
Sunny ended up costing us over $900 000 for reactionary ideas that allow migrant workers to beat thieves the way they do at home.
Arresting street beggars and legalising violence during citizens arrests seems like a lot of social carnage for $900k.
National sought out the Migrant Exploitation Tobacco Guild to lock in reactionary migrant communities who want to take the law into their own hands, and it has worked.
In NZ we have a very racial and class structure to our retail crime.
Dispossessed Māori and Pacifica kids rob shops staffed by exploited migrant workers while the white middle class clutch their pearls in the suburbs and scream for tough on crime punishment before that crime reaches their homes.
I’m far more interested in the wide spread exploitation of migrant workers by this industry rather than allowing shop owners to arm themselves.

The ‘corner dairy campaign’ quietly backed by big tobacco
A campaign to “save our stores” from a smokefree initiative looks like a grassroots effort. The truth is more complicated.
Since 1 August, ads have started showing up on Facebook urging people to support a petition to “save our stores”.
The ads, which lead to a website called Save Our Stores, ask users to sign a petition to repeal the Smokefree 2025 Act. The act includes a measure to reduce the number of stores selling full strength tobacco from 6000 nationwide to 600 by July 2024.
At first glance, the campaign appears to be an initiative from dairy owners. Under a headline of “who we are” on the website’s “about us” page, a dairy owner said to be from Lower Hutt is featured: “My name is Bhavesh. I’m a dairy owner in Lower Hutt. I’ve been serving customers for 17 years.”
However, smaller type at the bottom of the page says the website is “proudly supported” by tobacco companies BAT (British American Tobacco) New Zealand and Imperial Brands. The website’s privacy policy says the website is “provided” by the tobacco companies.
The website encourages dairy owners to get involved by printing out posters to display in their stores. These include messages in bold type warning: “This dairy is under threat of closure” with a QR code which leads to the website.

The Tobacco Industry via the Migrant Exploitation Tobacco Guild want something in return (other than the hundreds of millions in subsidies that Casey Costello has gotten them) and so Goldie, in return gave the Migrant Exploitation Tobacco Guild a virtue signal to empower vigilante Shop owners with new citizens arrest powers.
The problem for Goldie however is that those rednecks who are turned on by performing citizens arrests don’t read the fine print and none of the people excited by this will comprehend that it has to be for crimes punishable by 3 years in prison and what is being stolen has to be more than $1000.
This will lead to ZB Dads stepping in to big balls a situation that will spiral into violence.
We should not be empowering ill trained bigots to start touching people under the false impression that they are the law!
National have empowered people like Destiny Church to be the new Sheriffs.
Such a bad faith policy will lead to more violence in society.
The Police are the best trained people to facilitate arrests, not angry citizens.
