My Final Word: Why We Must Respect the Appeal of a Monster

It is painful. It is infuriating. And it forces victims and the nation to endure trauma once again.
But the appeal process must be respected — not for him, but for us.
He will serve life without parole — a sentence of historic magnitude. That punishment must withstand scrutiny. And more importantly, our democracy must withstand him.
He wanted backlash. He wanted division. He wanted hate to multiply.
Instead, he was given due process, legal rights, and the protections of a liberal democracy — because that is who we are.
We defeat hate not by abandoning our values, but by defending them.
