Installing Israeli Apologist and Free Speech Stormtrooper onto Human Rights Commission undermines our collective human rights mana
Installing an Israeli Apologist like Dr Stephen Rainbow as Chief Human Rights Commissioner is a slap in the face to human rights in this country and must immediately be protested until he is forced to resign.
At a point when the IDF have directly killed over 40 000, when there are 10 000 bodies rotting under the rubble that haven’t been included in that number and there may be as many as 180 000 who have died from indirect consequences of Israel’s disproportionate war crime we are appointing an Israeli Apologist as Chief Human Rights Commissioner!

After the IDF got caught on CCTV raping a 13 year old Palestinian boy while in an Israeli torture camp, we are appointing an Israeli Apologist as Chief Human Rights Commissioner???
After the October 7 attack, the news media was aflame with allegations of systematic sexual assault by Hamas, including an explosive front-page New York Times story that galvanized support for Israel’s war on Gaza despite an already horrific civilian death toll.
But now, video has emerged that appears to show Israeli soldiers gang-raping a Palestinian detainee, and the major corporate news media has barely mentioned it.
In fact, this video is just the latest evidence that Israel has been systematically torturing Palestinian detainees, little of which has gained sustained attention from most major U.S. news outlets.
The Intercept has been exposing these abuses for months, but it’s never been more challenging to report from on the ground about Israel’s war on Gaza, which has killed at least 113 journalists so far.
This is an abomination.
Appointing an Israeli apologist as the Chief Human Rights Commissioner when Israel is actively conducting in real time an ethnic cleansing war crime is such a stain on our collective mana.
Doubling down, this hard right racist climate denying beneficiary bashing disabled abusing Government has also selected Free Speech Stormtrooper, Dr Melissa Derby…
Derby has previously been named as a member of the Free Speech Union.
In an April 2023 column by RNZ’s Mediawatch on protests around anti-trans rights activist Kellie-Jay Keen Minshull, also known as Posie Parker, it was reported that Derby “liked a tweet calling for [trans activist Shaneel] Lal to be “locked up” and retweeted one saying the “trans movement” cannot be tolerated in civil society.”
Derby has also appeared in a series of videos for the website The Common Room with titles like “Equity or Equality” and “Is the system stacked against some Kiwis?”
In the latter video, she asks, “If systemic racism is the cause for a disproportionate number of Māori experiencing poor outcomes, why don’t all Māori experience poor outcomes?
“In fact, on many measures, the vast majority of Maori perform perfectly well. How is this possible, if systemic racism is everywhere, causing poor outcomes?”
…to appoint such Culture War Grifters onto our Human Rights Commission is an affront to the values of that Commission.
It’s like appointing book burners to run the library.
The culture shock alongside the right wing legislative blitzkrieg being rammed through are inter generational and these appointments represent a mutilation of our Human Rights, not their protection.
