MP Darleen Tana vows to fight Green Party’s possible use of waka-jumping law
Former Green, now independent MP, Darleen Tana has told their former party they “will not be resigning” and that they will fight attempts to use the waka-jumping law to oust them from Parliament.
Tana’s response to the Greens argued why they did not think the law “could reasonably be invoked” against them.
Tana also skewered the Greens for u-turning on their longstanding opposition to waka-jumping rules.
“I was gobsmacked to be held up as a “liar” and “not fit for purpose” by Green Party leadership. And, heartbroken to be the subject of such a malicious campaign of mis- and dis-information,” Tana said.
Tana quoted former Green co-leader Rod Donald who noted that “the principle of democracy may come at a price”.
“This or any other piece of legislation cannot distinguish between the Jim Andertons and the Alamein Kopus of this world. Jim Anderton, as other speakers have already said, exercised his conscience. He claimed that his old party left him and that he remained true to its principles. Alamein Kopu had no good cause, but she is the price of democracy,” Tana quoted Donald as saying.
Tana has the audacity to quote Rod Donald?!?!
Tana has declared their pronouns as ‘They/Them’.
I know. I know. I know.
I’m not kidding, that’s why the news story by NZ Herald reads weird because they have to keep referring to them as they.
Tana is part of the uber woke Identity Politics clique who were attempting a soft coup by placing Elizabeth Kerekere high on the party list rankings after the Greens changed the rules that allowed those wth ‘lived experience’ to gain voting powers.
The scale of how powerful identity politics over class now has over the Left makes this all the more hilarious.
I have fought these middle class identity acolytes and their shallow woke Wellington dogma, but even I concede my class argument is being slowly strangled off in favour of identity politics as a new wave of youth join the ranks; youth who do it for the hashtag; do it for the ‘gram; do it for the likes and retweets and in that world Identity Politics is Yas Queen.
The holy trinity of woke dogma is:
In the name of the non binary mother: All white people are irredeemable cross burning racists.
In the name of the non binary daughter: B-E-L-I-E-V-E ALL WOMEN that ALL MEN are rapists.
In the name of the monthly red ghost: Anyone supporting free speech is a uniform wearing Nazi who hates the Trans community.
REMEMBER: There is no wriggle room here, if ANYONE dared make a joke about middle class woke dogma, they themselves are evil and must be immediately cancelled by the Wellington Woke.
This is where we are as a movement on the Left and the Right can not believe their luck at all the culture war ammunition we have handed them to trap us in culture war fights that we can never win.
No where is the power of identity politics more apparent than in Darleen Tana’s extraordinary refusal to leave and instead stay on in Parliament.
Darleen’s argument is that despite quitting the Greens and despite being a list candidate, she is a Māori woman who understands Māori science and as such, has a right to remain in Parliament – DESPITE quitting and DESPITE being a Party List MP.
Darleen believes her identity matters more than her actual political affiliation.
Look – if Darleen was an electorate MP and her quitting was driven by a conscious objection to Green Party policy, then she would have a right to stay, but that’s not what’s happened here at all!
There were serious allegations about her husband exploiting migrant labour, allegations that once investigated showed a far higher level of awareness of the issue on Darleen’s part than she was upfront about.
If she gave a damn about the Green Party kaupapa, she would have fallen on her sword once the allegations become public, but her Millennial level selfishness and self justification that her identity trumps all political obligations is astounding evidence of just how powerful Identity Politics has now become on the Left.
Chloe has no option other than invoke the Waka jumping bill to get rid of her because every day Darleen stays in Parliament is just another reminder of how weak the Greens are.
Weakness in politics is death and the latest Polls are showing that.
The trouble for Chloe is that the next candidate off the Party list is even woker…
…and the one after him pole danced to raise funds for the last election…
…the ‘lived experience’ groups inside the Greens have been given enormous selection of candidate powers and they have propelled these Identity Politics candidates up the list, the Greens need a good hard long look at themselves and the candidates they are promoting simply because of their diversity.
Candidate selection is a battle for another day, but right now if Chloe doesn’t invoke the Waka jumping, she will be seen as weak.
The bitter shallowness of Identity Politics has replaced the power of class solidarity and we will see the ultimate showdown of this in the American election where poor white people have become as easily triggered as middle class woke activists and now see themselves as the victim, and when white poor people start seeing themselves in the same victimhood language as the woke, we are in an enormous amount of danger.
Defining ourselves through a constant prism of marginalization helps the Right, not the Left!
Unfortunately this is rational, logical and objective thinking, and as we all know from the woke, rational, logical and objective thinking is a heteronormative white cis male privilege and thus worthless.
Meanwhile, the earth is melting…
Earth saw hottest day in recorded history over weekend – climate agency
On Sunday, the Earth sizzled to the hottest day ever measured by humans, yet another heat record shattered in the past couple of years, according to the European climate service Copernicus.
…we are so fucked as a movement.
The greens have to eat a rather large dead rat if invoking the Waka jumping law to kick out Tana.
I guess it boils down to whether they embrace their principles or embrace democracy….it can’t be both.
“The greens have to eat a rather large dead rat”
Better keep away from then.
Darleen Tana should stay in Parliament as a living reproach to the Greens for the shallowness of their MP candidate selection. Two more years of seeing her, I mean ‘them’, sitting sullenly in their corner drawing their salary may persuade the Greens to abandon the false god of postmodern identitarianism and focus on the politics of economic justice: a fair go for everyone without regard to race, purported ethnicity, sex, sexuality, or imagined gender.
Notwithstanding as Martyn pointed out, the drop kicks behind her in the list aren’t going to be an improvement.
Part of me hopes she stays.
Im right – Very well put
Even better from a RW POV is that if they do get elected to government their incompetence will doom them on implementing policy, even worse than Labour.
‘Worse than Labour’ is a very hard target to achieve…
You are a childish little girl Ada.
We know National, Act and NZ First are miles worse than Labour, fact.
The voters disagree with you.
What voters exactly?
Epsom voters.
Sounds misogynistic.
Lets not mince words…Tana must be sent packing, and the Greens perhaps consider re-shuffling their candidate deck.
All Parliamentary parties without exception have made blunders with their selections if you examine the MMP era, so no one is exempt from an Alamein Kopu, David Garrett or Sam Uffindell.
you are right .Even the above the law national party is full o sexters ,child abusers ,peverters of justice ,and recently a fraudster who is an electorate chair
Perhaps National do not make too many mistakes, sexters notwithstanding, they actually attract and choose dodgy and bent people because of their intrinsic party values.
Sam Uffindel was still at school.
For heaven’s sake talk about drawing a long bow, pathetic.
Yes but he didn’t bother to contact and apologise to the boy he beat up and injured until after he joined the national party in Tauranga and was seeking candidate selection.
Bullies at high school (unless they take real steps) continue through life to be bullies.
The left have little to find fault with so need to search hard
I picked some names over time at random, there are many more if you would like of all political stripes. “Don’t you know who I am”, the dick pick sender, Labour’s Indian guy…which way did he go again…
Darleen Tana is a list MP who did not give full disclosure to the Green Party of anything that might cause issues in future…not coming clean is a main reason they will not entertain her any longer.
Easy to find if you don’t have your head stuck in the neoliberal sand as you do Trevor.
Whats your excuse for Barb then .Sam is still a fucken bully and she failed at her attempt to be one .
Using the excuse Sam Uffindell was still at school?
For heaven’s sake talk about drawing a long bow, pathetic.
Fuck identity politics even I believe TPM should drop the name even though I voted for them on policies more than identity. IMO the Greens do a good job representing Maori issues and voted for them previously. Last thing I want for our country is to be divided on race and if that means not supporting identity politics then I’m all for the greater good a well known maori principle.
Stephen you are right TPM had by far the best tax policy but 90% of voters would not have read that because they are too caught up in the race bait race to the bottom of the world
Can’t understand why Chloe wastes the Greens ‘ parliamentary questions on maori issues. Must consider the govt is doing a great job for the environment.
because unlike the current government that is totaly focused on money she knows there are much wider issues that make a society work .Green is for go ,blue is for greed .
When someone is being asked to “swallow a dead rat” we need to step back and ask ourselves whether there is some more wholesome food available. There is. It is called “democracy”. Government by the people. Of course to members of parliament that may be even more unpalatable than the proverbial dead rat.
Darleen Tana is said to be “the problem” but there have been other Darleen Tana’s in the past, and there will be more Darleen Tana’s in the future. More broadly the problem is said to be “woke identity politics” but woke identity politics is not new and it is not going away anytime soon and when it does go away there will be some other ideological perversion ready to step into its shoes.
The fundamental and indisputable problem is the Realm of New Zealand’s system of governance which is not just undemocratic but determinedly anti-democratic. So give us continuous election under an open ballot and there will no more Darleen Tana’s and no more bandwidth wasted on Darleen Tana angst. Of course the colonialist political elites will never do that for us. We must do it for ourselves.
This candidate selection scheme in the greens. Would prospective environmentalist candidates identifying as totara, rimu, moana, wai and non-GE crops trump candidates identifying LGTBQ+/- ?
Nobody will hold it against the Greens if they kick out Tana. She represents nobody. Although she claims to represent her whanau and a few fans who said she should stay on. What she really represents is political bludging by collecting a fat salary check without scruples.
The Identitarian trap here to automatically accept everyone as truly being what they say they are.
If you can believe an adult male is now female because she/he truly believes she now is, then you have to accept Tana as she describes herself – an oppressed wahine, not distorting Parliament’s proportionality…
And if you believe Luxon is a real christian and behaves like a chistian should then you must be truley stupid .I remember Judith milking the christians at the previous election what a fucken joke they are
Childish Ada yet again, stay on topic.
The issue is Tana is entitled, sound familiar?
Her equivalent is the PM of NZ the entitled Chris Luxon.
Yet you NSC, and Gordon, say the real topic here is Chris Luxon, not identity politics.
And add a few insults to make yourself feel big.
Poor Ada, so easily triggered. Yes Luxon is the issue. Unqualified to simplify things for you as you’re not that smart.

I’m not sure that immersing myself in the world of the BMW Gran Coupe has much to do with Darleen Tana and the Greens. But thanks for sharing.
Yep, all Greek to me!
I once worked in a place where everyone shared a similar worldview. It worked. Everyone pulled in the same direction. Opportunity to grow the business arose and it became much larger, very quickly. New folk of course were employed. Before long what was once a shared ethos was no longer. The place was captured by the outsiders. That’s diversity for you. Even the name of the company changed, not entirely, but with the addition of a few more words that reflected the identities of some of the newcomers. That in itself was a gunfight. Some of the newcomers felt the name change did not reflect what they represented. Fast forward two decades. It’s pretty much just a pile of bricks now.
The moral? Well, it’s just a story. And truth be known it may have ended badly anyway. Some things are simply outta ya control. A cork on the turbulent sea of social and economic change. Chuck in a global pandemic. But somewhere in the story perhaps there’s a lesson for the Greens.
yep the lesson is dump her on that pile of bricks .
Conversation between two apparent strangers in secluded part of Auckland Domain.
‘So about arranging a car accident. How much would it cost?’
ask act or national
This whole affair shows why Greens cannot be seriously considered to hold total power. They have a good message on social and environmental policy but cannot move swiftly in the face of a crisis. Imaging them in power when covid struck .By the time a policy had been formulated and agreed by members we would all be dead.
And yet Act are in government and look at the appalling policy they are trying to implement and then there is National that has completely fucked over 90% of the country. Imagine if they had been the government during covid. There would have been 20,000 more deaths. Reading some of your posts perhaps we would have been better off.
There must be a lot of those that who have been fucked over who are happy for it to happen as National is growing in popularity.
As a personnal note I do not like all of Acts or NZ First policies and even some of National’s
go against my thinking but MMP is the system we work under so .I havecto accept what we have as to me it is better than Labour Green in charge.
Good for you but I and many others agree that what we have now is far worse than Labour Green in charge.
” …we are so fucked as a movement ”
And with that statement the left in New Zealand is finally dead.
Couldn’t agree more. hoist by their own petard.
I find the Darleen Tana issue hilarious.
I view all politics as a form of entertainment these days.
And although I like Chloe a lot ( as a former Green voter)this is a seriously hard lesson she needs to learn and FFS! take it on board and build her skills as a leader. The Greens fucked up big time by not having the brains to support the waka jumping rules. It’s Politics not a game of tiddlywinks where everything is fair and square!
As for the rest of the Greens well don’t hold your breath!
Drop kicks woketards and oxygen thieves!
Victor Billot’s Ode apropos:
Last Stand
The Green banner flies proudly
Over the remote desert fort.
It has been many long months
Since the siege began
On 14 October 2023.
The Green ranks are growing thin.
Constant bombardment from the artillery
Of King Luxon’s mercenaries;
Mutineers and deserters gnaw
At the resolve of the defenders.
They have one bottle of water left.
They have two band aids kept aside.
They have three blank cartridges remaining.
But Captain Chlöe of the First Woke Hussars
Battles on resolutely
As waves of screeching dervishes
Painted in blue woad swarm the walls.
“We can’t hold out much longer,”
Mutters Captain Chlöe
As she scans the horizon with her field glasses.
But yet – there coming over the horizon
Riding on a low emission mule:
Reinforcements!
The remaining troops pull out semaphore flags
And virtue signal desperately
At the lonely figure clopping towards them.
“What have you got, comrade?”
Shouts Captain Chlöe.
“Water, bandages or ammunition?”
Gunner Benjamin Doyle, MA,
Number 18 on the Green list,
Holds up a large cardboard box.
“Community intersectional reflexivity,”
He replies, handing over
A complete set of his University of Auckland
Research papers.
@ Chloe Swarbrick.
Ignore your frustrations and understand that [this] will pass and [it] will make you stronger. What you’re experiencing is a process of education through evolution and evolution always comes with someone’s aunty getting eaten in the woods. Exploit [it] for what it is then use it to your advantage.
Personally, I’ve always seen your behaviour as being honourable which is precisely the opposite to literally everyone else in politics and that represents a huge advantage for you.
I think you should leave The Green Party. Leave Darleen to completely fuck it up. James HSBC Shaw has already tainted The Green Party anyway by his association with one of the greediest, most morally corrupt banks in the world. How about The Aotearoa/NZ Green-Labour Party or similar. Perhaps less wordy. Weld our primary industry farmers to Maori who are the Treaty to organic agriculture to our economy to the climate.
Clean, clear and direct while fomenting multi-cultural respect and support while earning money with a clear conscience. We could earn and keep money that’d be well clear of the 14 multi-billionaires, the 3118 multi-millionaires and the four now foreign owned banks who are also the second most profitable in the world.
The natzo’s and their privateer mafia who control us all at this point would be fucked.
‘The natzo’s and their privateer mafia who control us all at this point would be fucked’
Speak for yourself cuntyboy/white-cell, I’m not owned by anyone from National or this Govt, but if you of course feel like a slave then so be it, not me.
Your black print stuff is not believed by anyone. So, the main gist of your argument is disproved.
Deselected MPs have been doing this shit since Norm Kirk’s son John, in my memory. Corner a person, especially an egotistic politician, and they’ll come up with a ready rationalization.
You make a better case about the Greens’ candidate selection.
No, the movement isn’t over, at least on this account. Concentrate on the main things, like Bernie and Corbyn, and leave alone these , rightful in my view, lesser issues.
Hopefully Tana will make the Greens act. Once they understand the verb they can act on the environment as opposed to their low hanging fruit Gen Z pseudo targets.
Yes the Green Party are no longer a serious political group but rather opportunists seeking remuneration at a level they could only dream of in the private sector. In fact Tana is a typical example of a Green Party politician.
This debacle is an example of the Greens inability to manage/govern.Tilting heads, smirks and sarcasm doesn’t do it.
Yet Willis, Luxon, Seymour and Peters smug arrogance, corruption, smirks and sarcasm does do it?
Typical examples of a right wing government politician. Not one can be taken seriously and could only be opportunists seeking remuneration at a level they could only dream of in the private sector.
