Government confirms plans for youth boot camps
The Government is moving ahead with plans to create military style boot camps for “the most persistent young offenders,” Childrens Minister Karen Chhour says.
The establishment of “Young Offender Military Academies” was part of the coalition Government’s 100-day plan and comes alongside the creation of “a new Young Serious Offender designation” said Chhour.
“We intend for a pilot for a military-style academy to be operating from the middle of this year. It will have a military-style component as well as a rehabilitative and trauma-informed care approach to help these young people turn their lives around and reduce their risk of reoffending,” she said.
You know Military Boot Camps don’t work.
You know that, I know that, National knows that, and Oranga Tamariki should be ashamed.

If you are Right Wing you don’t care Military Boot Camps don’t work, all you care about is that kids you despise get the bash from some brutal Full Metal Jacket level Boot Camp fantasy!
Admit it, you known this doesn’t work, you just want revenge and a sense these kids are frightened and yelled at.

A whanau member who now is doing life for murdering his partner had during his teenage years in the 80s completed 4 terms of corrective training then graduated to adult prison. He is one of many examples that these military training camps don’t work.
These camps reinforce ‘that you have to tough (violent) to be a man’ which is very harmful to a young mind trying to find out where he belongs in the world, it also creates a hierarchy within the boys that see the toughest (who also become bullies and are favored by the wardens) who start to exercise that new found power on other more vulnerable kids. This is a marketing ploy more than a meaningful social policy and the evidence is there but apparently Seymore knows better.
Who would have thought that training a generation of unruly teens how to build muscle and run all day would create unruly adults on roids. Amazing.
If they aren’t going to pass at least 60% of these new woke recruits then they will have no purpose and no guidance for it. And I can assure NZDF won’t be getting a corresponding budget increase for this absolute failure of a policy.

Back when the borstals had training ships — a tradition stretching back to the 1830’s — the trainee sailors would end up enlisting in the Royal Navy or the merchant navy.
How many of these L.S.V. recruits ever actually enlisted? We must never forget that these neo-liberals deliberately reintroduced mass unemployment after it had been abolished for forty years, in order to lower wages — so they are never going to offer these men the chance to actually earn a living. The same politicians also shut down nearly all of the mental wards, so the mad ones won’t get any treatment either.

Lot of these kids needs discipline, but with that they need love, understanding and correct guidance. Boot camps are best run as after school program, where kids have access to good role models who fill the role of father or older sibling,

Since you lack the imagination to think of a punishment that actually works you will support boot camps even though they will make the young offenders worse? My impression is that almost all of the readers making comments here think that there should be consequences for youth offending so that would suggest that you are out of touch with reality.

First of all the military isn’t a replacement for fathers it’s where you go to prove that you are tougher than your dad. They’re just taking the good bits out of military training. The discipline. Routine. And public pressure and prestige. NZDF needs soldiers you can’t take precious few soldiers away this will be as equally taxing on them as coronateen. These guys are insane.
This government will only accept evidence when it suits them. These kids are the way they are due to lack of guidance and control . The big question is can this government do the job properly with adequate funding .It is worth a try if it saves a kid heading done a live of crime.Ignoring them has done nothing to help.

My brother went to one of those governments camps for bad boys and was bum fucked they don’t work he came out worse than when he went in and is still bitter and angry and the Government had to pay out compensation although it wasn’t much. I don’t have much faith in boot camps nor do I have confidence in this governments ability to deliver.

In my youth I was one of those was sentenced to a juvenile detention centre, presided over by a Commander H. who had been superintendent of the Portsmouth Naval Prison, reputedly one of the toughest prisons in Europe. Having failed to “break” me he held me in confinement until the last half hour of my sentence, and was then surprised when, on discharge, I offered to shake his hand. I have nothing personal against Commander H. He was just another British military officer trying and failing to force compliance upon the recalcitrant youth of Aotearoa. He didn’t really understand us, and initially at least underestimated our strength, determination and loyalty to our own people. The adult prison system, which I went on to experience later in life was similarly ineffective. The prison authorities were powerless against those who put their trust in God. And that is the way that it will stay so long as the colonialist regime continues to exists.
