Waatea News Column: Aotearoa NZ minus the Aotearoa: Welcome to Old Zealand

The New Hard Right Government of National, ACT and NZ First intend to whitewash and erase the promise of the Treaty in a short sighted spiteful knee jerk collection of policies that feeds their voters bigotry rather than builds us as a people.
On one level the spite is petty, Removing Māori names from Government Ministries hardly seems pressing when we have 600 000 using Food Banks monthly, but on other levels, the spite is manifestly malicious.
Disestablishing the Māori Health Authority will intentionally doom more Māori for early deaths.
Dumping smoke free targets will see more Māori die from tobacco related disease.
Removing Treaty Obligations will see Māori going backwards.
Pushing through a new definition of the Treaty Principles while promising a referendum is simply inflammatory and will spark a level of civil disobedience this country hasn’t seen before.
The new Hard Right Government of National, ACT and NZ First argue this is democratic, but democracy is merely a process, it isn’t a moral arbiter!
True moral leadership, true political courage requires leaders who look above the bigotry of their supporters to do what is right.
Living up to the promise of the Treaty is the obligation of every Kiwi, not simply because it protects Māori rights, but because it protects Pakeha rights and stipulates the relationship between the Government and the People is one where the Crown has a responsibility to protect the agency, sovereignty and rights of us all!
The Treaty is a thing of simplicity and beauty yet all National, ACT and NZ First seem interested in is cementing into place 19th Century white settler privilege rather than promoting and enabling a living growing document that is at the heart of our country.
Treaty’s are to be honoured, not settled!
The anger and frustration at Labour for saving us from a Covid mass death event  has created a bitter Government of seething resentment and right wing conspiracy theory.
We are all a lesser people as a result of this new Hard Right Coalition Government.

  1. That’s the problem right there @Bomber

    “Living up to the promise of the Treaty is the obligation of every Kiwi, not simply because it protects Māori rights, but because it protects Pakeha rights and stipulates the relationship between the Government and the People is one where the Crown has a responsibility to protect the agency, sovereignty and rights of us all!”

    So long as we look to the Crown to resolve Maaori rights, and those of Pakeha, we are stuffed.
    The Crown was a ceremonial figure that hid the blood and dirt of the British Empire.
    The Treat was a fraud.
    Neither Maaori not non-Maaori can survive in this delusion.
    It is patronising to say that ordinary working people have no future except through the agency of the capitalist state.
    For by looking up to heaven or to the Treaty as our salvation as a people united we are blocking our own emancipation as a nation.
    For a socialist republic aligned to other socialist republics world wide to enable the working people to organise their own governments and stop the otherwise inevitable crash of human civilisation as we disappear down the abys of our own greed and stupidity.

    • Yes! Communism will work this time, they just got it wrong all those other times that killed the tens of millions of working class and poor people.
      Equality for all workers! Except the special few who make the rules.
      Would you make the rules Dave?

      • Communism has never been implemented. Something close was in the early Soviet Union but as you allude to, this was not real communism because the senior party members lived a much better life than the rest of the population.

        But get your facts right – communism is much much younger than the feudal capitalist systems that have dominated most of the last 5000 years on this planet. Many millions have died in such set-ups but this was assumed to be the “cost choice of the market”.

        Capitalist systems have hardly been fair and reasonable for most of the peasants who have had to struggle to survive under their feudal landlords. The biggest problem with communism is the fact that most humans cannot manage to share power in the way communist systems preach – that is, the weakness of human character means that ultimate power – in both capitalist AND communist systems – corrupts (unless you have stringent checks and balances that are enforceable).

        By the way – I don’t support communism, just say that it never has had a real chance to work – and probably never will

    • While I admire your optimism all human governments have the same fault & that is our human nature. Unless you can change the selfish hearts of all the members of society problems will inevitably arise.
      The early Christian church had power from above to transform people & the results were incredible, read these descriptions of its activity,
      eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality;
      Then fear (respect) came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.
      Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
      Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.
      Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.
      Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. Therefore

      “If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
      If he is thirsty, give him a drink;
      For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”

      Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

      While error took over the church & became responsible for most of the problems existing today the same need for supernatural power exists still & is the only way that people can change.
      I can appreciate that we live in a secular society where most people don’t even believe in a God however when world events keep getting worse strange things are likely to happen.

      • @ Bonnie. You write: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
        ‘…overcome evil with good…’ and a big fucking gun and a sack of actual and real ecstasy powder freely administered by planes, trains and automobiles.
        Look at us? Just look at us? We’re nothing more than blood, guts and electricity. We must remember that God, what ever the fuck that is, availed us the ability to manufacture proper drugs so lets do that instead of bizarrely adoring The Three Stooges in their stupid little suits. Look at seymour? He’s just leaned over and let one off. Luxon can’t remember where he left his kitten and he’s happy about that, while old winston knows he’s a fucking crook and is reasonably sure he’ll get clean away with it, and doesn’t the decor say everything that needs to be said about their personalities which is always in absentia when they’re in the public eye. Are they in fact living humans? Does anyone know for sure?

        • @ Countryboy, while I appreciate your contributions with different degrees of enthusiasm the trouble with forced compliance is that it never resolves the issue so can never lead to a peaceful resolution. The Dark Ages is past history & maybe even forgotten by many people today even though it shows the danger of church & state combining. We are warned that the same sort of thing will happen again so when you see it happening just remember that you have a choice in what you believe.
