Election 2023: Chris Hipkins tests positive for Covid-19 on critical campaign day

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins has tested positive for Covid-19, a spokesperson has confirmed.

Hipkins was supposed to attend a Samoan church service in Mangere this morning, but his staff advised he could no longer attend.

He tested positive today after experiencing “cold and flu symptoms” from yesterday.

Hipkins will be isolating for five days or until he returned a negative test, his spokesperson said.

Sigh.

There are so many ironies here they implode into the black hole of Karma.

Labour were the ones tasked with shutting down the country when the first wave of Covid struck and the courage of that decision which prevented a mass death event and saved 6000 lives left a bitter stain against Labour that became infected and turned into a mutated type of hatred in some of our fellow citizens.

That Chippy is struck down just as he’s finding his mojo with fucking Covid is karma in the eyes of those who have become embittered by the lock down.

While he is struck down with Covid, Jacinda sparkles at a New York event.

Again, a dreadful karma.

To be honest, in any ‘normal’ case, you would have to write Labour’s chances off and call the election now, but this is not in any way shape or form a ‘normal’ election.

ACT are promising to bring back submachine guns.

Winston is threatening Jack Tame for asking him hard questions.

National will stop building State Houses.

ACT want to rob you of January 2nd stat holiday.

National can not fund their foreign buyers tax but will allow foreign speculators to price the next generation out of home ownership.

NZ First just dumped a candidate who compared Covid vaccinations to Nuremberg trials.

National will give Landlords the power to throw tenants out without notice.

NZ First will misuse the Terrorism Suppression Act to designate domestic groups for paramilitary policing.

National will start riots and bloodshed at Funerals attempting to take Gang Patches from funerals.

ACT will amputate the State and suppress voices that aren’t white and male.

National will rob 2 year olds, mutilate public transport and literally steal from climate change funds to give Landlord’s a $250 per fortnight tax cut!

ACT will start a race war with their racist referendum.

Winston claims Māori aren’t indigenous.

ACT want to spark domestic meth cooking so they can pimp for big Pharma.

National will give bosses the right to sack after 90 days.

National, ACT and NZ First will all punish beneficiaries.

National, ACT and NZ First have used Māori as a punching bag.

National, ACT and NZ First will slash the public services while claiming they aren’t slashing public services.

National, ACT and NZ First will abandon all climate change legislation and allow the planet to burn.

National, ACT and NZ First are taking millions in donations from the mega rich.

Because of all this toxic self interested right wing policy that literally takes from the poor and gives to the rich while building a Police State, I think honest Kiwis will reject malice and spite as political values and will stay loyal to Chippy even while he has Covid.

This is the most important election of a generation where the Right, unconstrained by decency and enabled by the infected hate of petty bigotry, will vandalise the Egalitarian State in a manner beneath the mana of our country and I think we are a better people than National, ACT and NZ First believe we are.

You must vote as if your life depended on it my fellow citizens, because under the Alliance of Arseholes, it really will be!

Let’s not leave this election to karma.

Get well soon Chippy!

  1. “This is the most important election of a generation”…..

    Damn right it is!!

We are about to find out the level if stupidity and gullibility that now sits within the New Zealand …

Luxon’s a D grade actor trying to be a politician….a know nothing do/ say anything for power..

    Seymour’s a very very strange petulant clown…

Winston’s an ego that needs constant adulation at any cost…

    They will all fail!

    • Grant I think that Seymour’s sub-human. He shocks me daily. Winston’s the closest there is to a normal sort of human being.

  2. Some of the defensive comments for Winston’s pathetic display are ignoring the simple truth. Peter’s didn’t have an answer because he just makes stuff up. He’s relying on brand Peters not any plausible policy. Threatening a broadcaster for legitimate questions is a new low even by his knee high standards. He should get back on that horse he rides in his promo’s and sod off.

    • I didn’t watch it as Peters and Tame are two people I have very little time for.

It was very much noted from those that did watch, that Jack never mentioned the elephant in the room when interviewing James Shaw, regarding his very questionable cv and his degrees?

An AUT study found that 82% of NZers don’t trust the media, and people wonder why?

    • Wheel you are correct about Winston but my your memory appears to be defective about one Willie Jackson the actual broadcasting minister making threats to a certain interviewer and not being disciplined for it.

Basically Winston is a complete liar but you will not find a more corrupt nepotistic useless shit show than the current Labour government in New Zealand’s history.

  3. This election is a choice between a proven failure with Labour or a probable failure with National.
Oh well, off to vote today…

    • Ada have you ever thought of justifying your comments with any kind of evidence – or is it all just slogans in there?

      • Why would I meet a greater evidence burden than the rest of the posters here on TDB?

And slogans sum up complexity very effectively, and actually get read.

      • What a silly question. Horsey gal @fucking Ada is about as sophisticated as a packet of Clairol blue rinse, with her hairdresser giving it yellow split ends at every appointment.
        (Poor fucking horses).
I’v never voted for gNats my entire life, but I had been hoping at least that McKinnons, Finlaysons, Spud Bolgers and one or two others might have come to the Nats’ rescue.
Many in here see the demise of Labour – not without good reason. But National is JUST as fucked. IF and when their coalition of chaos wins – how long does your reckons put money on it lasting (non-violently, at least).
Right now (today) they’re busy playing the victim card.
It’s possible I ‘spose if only because their farts smell considerably, CONSIDERABLY less pungent than the incumbent. It’s possible the dominatrix Willis and the twerker could pull something off between them

  4. Some history. In 2021, I was finally able to take a holiday. The last time previous was in 2017. I worked right through the Covid lockdowns so I never had that lockdown euphoria others had, and although I worked through, our company still had to cut wages to stay afloat, so I was working full time, on 80%, while others were at home making sour dough bread. So I finally managed to take a holiday.

My wife and I took a break and overseas travel was off the cards so we decided to do a camper van tour around the south island. We were into about our 3rd day of a ten day trip and I was having the time of my life, being with my wife, spending time in the beautiful South island and finally relaxing.

Then we had one case of Covid in Auckland.. one case! And the govt shut the entire country down. I had to rush back and get back to work again.

So I have no sympathy for Hipkins, all I can say is “karma’s a bitch you asshole!”

    • That is a very self indulgent immature ‘it’s all about me me me’ story and not the type of (‘for the greater good’) Kiwi that i grew up knowing.

You would have been hopeless circa 1914 -1918 and 1939- 1945.

Your ignorance about Covid and how it spreads is breathtaking. Literally….breath taking!!

Think Covid is done with the world?…dream on…. A hapless glib National/ Act/N.Z First monster maybe your preference next time around. Good luck with that hubristic shambles!

There are now quite a number of New Zealanders who have become selfish, everyone for themselves, narcissists. That personality type is highly prevalent in The National / Act / and N.Z First parties. So best you take your vote there.

      • Yes I too carried on working in Health for the betterment of those around me. For the sake of the whole country the time for individualism could wait.

      • So your very obvious support of booting people out of their jobs, kicking them out of their homes and deliberately pitting NZers against each other just because they disagree with you is not the very definition of selfish?

        • They all had a choice Peter, they put themselves first ahead of others, that defines selfishness to a tee.
The majority in the health sector you would think would put the health of others front and foremost. Would you not agree Peter?

          “Choice not chance determines destiny”

          They chose their own destiny.

  5. Pictures of Ardern living a glamorous life in NYC, rubbing elbows with movie stars and other celebrities, will be worth a couple of percentage points in this anti-Labour election.

    • What is it you hypocritical right-wing nut jobs say whenever someone points out one of your tax-evading parasitic big-money donors??
Oh yes, that’s right: “You’re just envious”.

    • Ada Ardern, advocate to the UNO for global censorship of free speech, probably scored another freebie designer frock too. Oh wow3x. She’s still an active part of the anti-free speech cabal back here in New Zealand though, which rates high with the tyrannical woke too dumb to dump her authoritarian machinations when she shot through, and determined to put an end to freedom of speech. Clooney’s lovely aunt Rosemary sang “I’ll Be Seeing You,” like the angel Ardern ain’t.

    • The multi million dollar donations by NZs elitist wealthy will be worth 20 or so percentage points for this pro right media and a guide to, “how to buy an election “.
Luxon will loose a few points because he is politically clueless and he and his deputy can’t do math.

    • You write as if there was a chance that the anti-Ardern people would change their minds. While I have not met every anti-Ardern person the ones I know seem to be so blinded by hate that even if she solved every problem in the world they would still hate her.

      • Don’t know about hatred, but lack of transparency, and secret agendas like Te Puapua will always be unacceptable, as is her onslaught against free speech.

        • Gentle Annie. “Don’t know about hatred, but lack of transparency, and secret agendas like Te Puapua will always be unacceptable,”

It wasn’t a fucken secret it was a discussion about possible solutions that can be considered but wasn’t part of govt policy. Fucken Winston the DPM at the time knew about it’s existences where the fuck do ya conspiracy nutjobs come from? Planet Mars??

        • Trumps free speech created an insurrection, by definition you believe that to be acceptable Gentle Annie? Not so Gentle after all!

        • Nope. It’s nouveau riche types like Nat’s John Key who get smitten by Hollywood ; Ardern was a performance artist, and that helped sink her.

  6. To add to that damning list of attacks on Kiwi’s, let’s not forget that those who cannot afford to retire without govt. superannuation will be forced to give up TWO years of their retirement life & spend remain (at ages 65 to 67) in the workforce.
This is so these right wing traitors don’t have to inconvenience their mega rich donors with a FAIR tax system.
    Disgusting.

      • According to the OECD, New Zealands Government Debt is 57% of GDP.
This is less than Sweden, Ireland, Australia, Sth Africa, Germany, Finland, UK, Belgium, Canada, Portugal, France, Spain, USA, Italy & Japan.
It is well below the OECD average of 89% of GDP.
So the scary debt monster isn’t what NAct paint it to be.

New Zealand’s level of tax is less than the OECD average (as a percentage of GDP). New Zealand’s top marginal tax rate on corporate income is lower than the OECD average.
So the myth that we are “overtaxed” is another NAct soundbite lie.

Therefore, to answer your question, yes it is affordable, especially given the relatively sound economic position of the Governments books and the enormous latitude we have to implement a fairer and more equitable tax system.
Of course NAct don’t want you to know this, because any such changes would threaten the egregious profits of their rich donors.

        • So by your theory –
My cows shitting in the river are perfectly acceptable as Aussie cows shit in theirs more.
It’s also OK to murder children but as long as we murder less than they do in other countries.

What winner strategy you have. By winner I mean extreme loser.

    • What is magical about a Superannuation age of 65?
Why is it written in stone? Was it in the Treaty? Or the UN Declaration of Human Rights?

      • Your comments are so supercilious.
Just stop and think about your fellow human beings, if you’re capable.
People who cannot afford to retire without super are literally having 2 years of their life in retirement stolen from them, because Cluxon & his pet Rottweiler would rather that than inconvenience their rich donors.
Despite what you Nactoids think, people are NOT there just to serve you and your donors.

        • It’s a simple question Jase.

You write as if the purpose of life is to reach retirement and start living off the taxation of others.

          • You obviously had a desk job Ada or god help us just lay there and had babies. You should get out more and see that labourers built your self proclaimed kingdom. They’re ready for retirement at 50!

  7. Probably best for Labour that a politician who doesn’t know what a woman is stays away from Samoan church services.

  8. Great opportunity for acting PM Carmel to make her very own “Cap’n’s Call” and promise Wealth Tax, Basic Income & free Dental to win this election!

    • TM Is that the same Sepuloni who kneecapped the Commissioner for Vulnerable Children and replaced the children’s needed independent advocate with a committee of diversities from a failing government department? If she won’t even support children, she shouldn’t be in Parliament at all.

  9. Vote for Maori is a vote for retaining ownership of our lands and resources for all NZers! no privatization, no BlackRock corporate takeover of natural resources, no to Treaty revisionist like Seymour who isn’t an expert, no to the MIC or banning foreign buying up NZ lands, etc…

  10. “Willis and Seymour are coming to a struggling neighbourhood near you armed with a knife.

” A National government would make spending cuts on a scale not seen since the 1990 – 96 Bolger government. That much was confirmed with the release of their Fiscal Plan on Friday. Government spending is currently high as a percentage of GDP — as high as it was during the Muldoon government. The question will now be whether an incoming National government might face the same wall of political opposition that the Bolger government did when it made the “Mother of All Budgets” cuts in 1991. Polls showed that nearly one in every three of National voters at the 1990 election had abandoned the party after that budget by July 1992. It was Winston Peters who capitalised on that opposition and left National to form NZFirst. He may well be lurking in the background, ready to pounce again if National’s cuts provoke a political backlash. That would make life very difficult for National. ”

  11. Yes, our Jacinda is enjoying the fruits of her labour of toiling solidly for the billionaire class. Very apt, and such joys await the next NZ leader who may shine at serving our unelected big-moneyed rulers There is no importance to this election other than it determining which side of the political circus gets to serve the ruling class over we the people and which side gets to wait in the wings to do the very same thing. Will it be the side that relishes serving the moneyed class or will it be the side that gags at having to serve big money over us….who will it be?

  12. ” Yes, our Jacinda is enjoying the fruits of her labour of toiling solidly for the billionaire class.”

Wasn’t that her target audience once she achieved notoriety from other serfs misery in her own country ?

How quickly you move on from your political legacy once you have taken what you can get out of it after all of those Kiwis who voted for what she promised are suffering from her inaction to do anything transformational.

Luxon will be no different ..pretending to care and govern for all but in reality it just another notch on the proverbial celebrity status wheel with a Knighthood to boot.
