Unions welcome Government’s move to require 900 businesses to report gender pay gap

The Government will soon require close to 900 businesses to report their gender pay gap which has largely been welcomed by workers unions.

On Friday, the Government announced around 900 businesses with more than 250 employees will have to report their gender pay gap, and then those with more than 100 workers to be introduced later.

Minister for Women Jan Tinetti and Associate Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety Priyanca Radhakrishnan made the announcement on Friday saying it marks a “significant step in closing the pay gap for Kiwi women”.

“The reality is that women have different experiences in the workplace than men, and change is needed. Requiring companies to publish their gender pay gap will encourage them to address the drivers of those gaps and increase transparency for workers,” said Minister Tinetti.

The Gender Pay Gap debate in NZ has always felt like a lot of white tertiary educated women at Boardroom level management pissed off they aren’t getting the same sweet deals the boys are getting.

Less Les Misérables and more Laissez-faire miserable.

Surely the harvest of civil society should be a wee bit broader than the Professional Female Management Class?

At the centre of the Gender Pay Gap is the biological reality women carry the babies. If we as a liberal progressive society want to ensure everyone has equal agency, then surely recognising biological reality is a starting point?

The first 12months should be maternity leave – or paternity leave, either one, but one of the parents should be paid to stay home with the infant for its first year of life. Who else do you want to look after an infant other than the parent?

Meanwhile, ECE should be nationalised and made completely free for 2 year olds to 5 year olds while all after school care should be free.

Childcare costs fall unevenly and unfairly on women, so why not eliminate those costs altogether?

Playing the Gender Pay Gap Game even when implemented, doesn’t lead to the outcomes desired.

If women having babies is stunting their pay careers, then subside the cost of having that kid with 12months maternity/paternity leave, Nationalise ECE and free after school care.

Allowing a parent to stay home with their kid for a year,  provide free early education care and free after school care would do more to live up to that promise than anything else.

All we do is make ideological tinkerings to pacify white tertiary educated women at Boardroom level management rather than real biological solutions because 4th wave feminism denounces biological reality.

  1. Good luck with that. After going though the rigmarole of having 3 staff members off on maternity leave all at the same time, one after only 3 months of employment, the chances are, I will think very hard next time I employ a younger female staff member.

In an ideal world all those things you’ve suggested would be great, if we were a rich country. We’re not.

  2. It’s not a gender pay gap – it is a primary caregiver pay gap. Whoever is the primary carer starts to fall behind their childless peers.

But you can’t tell that to the incompetents in the Labour Caucus who think any and all differences can be solved by them passing more regulations.

  3. Well said Martyn. This policy is LINO in a nutshell. How ironic that a government that preaches “follow the science” has shown us once again that it’s own practice is guided by ideology, NOT science.

The so-called gender pay gap is probably driven by sexual selection. Men are on average more career-driven than women, because women select successful who get ahead in the world. There is no comparable sexual payoff for women’s professional success or earning power – men have different priorities when selecting mates.

But it’s not just LINO that’s cravenly beholden to 4th wave feminist ideology. The Nats have signed up for this too, confirming what a bunch of weak-minded liberals they are.

But there’s worse to come if LINO get another term. They’ve signaled an interest in requiring firms to also report “ethnic pay gaps”. I’d love to know what they think this will achieve. It would be a bloody miracle if there no sizeable ethnic pay gaps in NZ, considering average ethnic differences in rates of family dysfunction, school attendance, and educational achievement.

  4. If this was to be done properly they’d want reporting on all pay gaps; ethnicity, age, height – I mean I’ve heard that more attractive people get paid more so we should include that.

Does a Vietnamese get paid as much as a white woman? And what about ageism? Is it it whatsboutism to ask that question?

What about neurodiverse people? Ex criminals – any gaps there?

  5. Fair pay is irrelevant if any man can just identify as a woman now. Great Job wokie thickos!

They somehow made life for woman worse off and less safe now with their loose grip on reality!

Luckily the public are starting to get rid of the terminally woke with axe to grind in the US when they notice the ridiculous woke courses that have sprung up in education – no research necessary to just spray out woke garbage and talk about diversity and inclusion. Of Course the inclusion is compulsory such as allowing male rapists to go to female prisons where they are ‘more comfortable’ with their gender and doesn’t include anybody with a different view from being able to speak and choose freely.

  6. There shouldn’t be a gender pay gap for doing the same work.
In my business gender played no part in remuneration including medical insurance, holidays, sick pay, company cars, etc, etc.

  7. Would help if all pay levels are available to all. There is too much confidentiality now. It has been known in the past that an experienced smart responsible pillar of a business, because she is a woman has trained younger males into jobs which she knows well, and seen them rise above her and at a higher pay grade which they have risen to in short time. That rankles, and quite reasonably. And she hasn’t some impediment or disability that might lead to a backroom position and lesser than usual pay scale.

  8. Ive never seen any woman complaining that not enough women collect garbage, pave roads or indeed even build houses.
The gender pay gap is a laughable myth
Women choose easier jobs and work fewer hours at them.
Now the government wants to reward them for those choices.
First let’s get more women on those garbage trucks.

  9. Easy fix. Just pay men and women crane drivers the same rate. Same for men and women fly in fly out mine workers. Same for men and women cops. Same for men and women nurses and child care workers. Oh that’s right we already do this but women don’t want to do the high paying physically hard and dangerous jobs in the world.

But they do the most difficult job on the planet https://youtu.be/CJIUyWPNfOI
