Is Jan Tinetti a dumb Minister of Education?

Wow this is dumb…

Jan Tinetti referred to Privileges Committee for possible contempt

Education Minister Jan Tinetti has been referred to Parliament’s Privileges Committee by the Speaker and could be found in contempt of Parliament after she failed to correct a false statement she made in the House quickly enough.

Tinetti would be the first MP in 15 years to be found in contempt of Parliament. The most recent was Winston Peters.

The issue at the heart of the matter is that Tinetti told the House in February that she had no responsibility for the release of school attendance data.

She was told later that day by staff that this was an error, but only corrected the record on May 2 – 14 sitting days later. Parliament sat on February 23, when Tinetti could have corrected the answer.

…I’ve only heard good things about Jan, so this is a surprise.

A generous appraisal would say that this looks like a fresh Minister who wasn’t aware of her Office’s full obligations and when she was told she seems confused over when she was supposed to correct it in the House.

A damningly cynical appraisal would be that it seems that it was more important to hide the truancy data and spin it than actually fronting up and admitting we have a problem WHILE acknowledging the disruption Covid has genuinely had on the learning environment.

Rather than get painted into an un-winnable corner justifying truancy, the Ministry just chose to spin and obfuscate, which is fine because that’s the job of the Ministry, but to have allowed those interests to mislead the House is wildly unacceptable .

Someone has to be sacked over that.

Pick a Public Servant and polish the silverware, a head will be required to roll for this, because the Minister either intentionally pulled this stunt (totally unacceptable) or was poorly advised (sack a public servant).

Meanwhile, truancy will grow as the unequal sacrifices seeded during Covid produce a damaged harvest of consequences where young peoples lives become blighted by a lack of education, socialisation and self-discipline.

Covid exposed the bleeding gums of our inequality, truancy is but a symptom of that.

We have far bigger issues in education than scapegoating truancy data transparency.

    • Just a cautionary note on all the mouthpieces mirroring each other here.
As far as I’m aware, so long as one has different email addresses here one can have different nom de plume’s to make comments. Or, in this case’ tedious brain-farts.
Does that then mean that all the yapping neo-liberal lap poodles below are, in fact, the same lap poodle.
One must admit; there is a sameness about the brain-farts isn’t there… They all smell blue and of money. Your money.
All Labour needs to do is denounce neo-liberalism and launch public inquiries. That’d fuck them.

      • Maybe there’s just a lot of people who are unhappy with the performance of the Government.

      • it’ll take a while @ cb
It’s a “broad chritch” and as you’re aware, neo-liberalism is and has reached the status of a cult.
It’s manipulated the polar opposites of the trad left-right axis, the language and all that goes with it. Aging hippies have become hard right (even to the extent that pathetic little individuals who professed caring sharing hippie creds now pop up as neo-fascist citizen sheriffs). History repeats (Jim Jones Jonestown for example.
As I’ve always thought, things may have to get a lot worse before they can get better, but be awake to the Great Pretenders

(OR NOT -they’ll be what they’ll be)

      • We did think Bert was using a sock puppet, or was that we thought Bert might be a sock puppet, or was that just he was a Muppet.

    • Yep.
      Thats the problem right there.
They’ve spent hundreds of billions to make everything worse.
Just the most inept bunch of muppets to ever enter parliament.

      • At least they did something.
        Put us in debt.
Now we can all get back to work and make NZ a better place from a low base.

        • Right, of course there was no debt before Labour. The ratings agency think we are basket case…not. Labour are guilty at an overall level of being tight arses like National. Comparatively low debt relative to many oecd countries….and shit infrastructure. But hey we will avoid debt and manage our retreat to the slopes of Mt Cook. All good.

      • Hundreds of billions?

You probably believe in the tooth fairy and the trickle down theory.

I’m surprised TDB let your comment through without evidence or fact checking. The fact Bob agreed with “without doubt”, means it is 100% false.

        • I think hundreds of billions is much too low an estimate, nevertheless whatever the correct amount they wasted it.
          Dereliction of duty.

          • As I said 100 % false.
National debt of New Zealand. NZ$ 120,153,306,681

I’d suggest both Bob Dulwich pedophile boy and Jay’s sentient boy understand the meaning of 100’s. Perhaps third form math or lower should be suffice. To not understand basic math is a true definition of cognitive deficit disorder.

  1. No, Tinetti is an MP of fine standing for the Labour Party who misspoke and did not correct their error in time – like a minute after they were corrected on twitter and elsewhere for their misspeaking.

That it took month for them to correct their error is due to their heavy work load only, it has nothing to with arrogance and disrespect for the Office they hold, the children that don’t get the education they should get, or the tax payer who funds their very comfy 6 figure salary, perks for life, lunch and rent.

In fact the only thing that really is an issue here is that people actually pointed out that MP Tinetti misspoke several month ago and kept on pointing out that they did not correct their misspeak but continued to double down on it. Really how rude of people/peasants trying to embarrass a hard working highly respected member of the Labour Party, and the current Labour government.

The only incompetent party in that whole mess is the PM who should have fired that person a long time ago, but were they to do that they would find themselves short another MP and soon enough that would really be a problem.

Tinetti does as they do because the Leader of the Labour Party, the PM lets them do as they wish.

  2. I think the terrible performance of education in general in NZ and the woke encapsulation of science into their personal woke knowledge and the vast amount of grifters on the teat of the ministry of education – stealing knowledge from children, is the much bigger problem in NZ!!!

  3. Martyn
It’s a culture thing. She has learnt this from the very best liar – Chris Hipkins.

      • Yes, you are right, he is not the best, he learned from the best. The mallard was his coach.
So does this mean his ability to learn is under question?

        • Certainly an adept liar even though he’s a slow learner.
          Devious an appropriate word.

      • Labour are lousy liars, no one believes them, especially now. John Key was a true master at the craft.

    • Wow that’s rich. Like Luxon’s consummate bullshitting over which country he is in or the fact that he’s not dog whistling over road signs. Let’s not even start on the urban density bollocks.

        • So that means what sausage, he’s okay to lie?
That says it all as far as intellect goes.

            • Gosh, to my biggest fanboy Bob, I am truly honored on you making me famous on TDB. Alas, it is truly sad that your complete lack of grammatical intelligence does not go unnoticed.

        • Okkkk. Let’s revisit this topic by year end when he is. I am pretty sure MPs are not supposed to lie in general

        • @ rb. Oh my God! Congratulations! You finally got something Right. AND correct! You win Bingo ! How does it feel? To be a winner? Unusual, would be my guess.

  4. A former school teacher, she should no better. I thought school teachers are perfect citizens.

The opposition minister s of education and health are streets ahead. Pointing to a shallow talent pool in Labour, after the loss of the two stars.

  5. Truancy is manufactured by the edukaushon system!

Every year, come the 31st of March. Kids get expelled if they’re too hard to deal with but the school keeps the funding that has just been granted. Then the kids are loose on the streets until they get picked up and sent to another school that doesn’t want them unless they can score some funding.

  6. the issue is BOTH sides appoint ‘loyalists’ who know nothing about their porfolios we are developing a UK system of having no knowledge or experience in the field they are appointed just blindly support their party

  7. Doesn’t seem hard: “Follow the bloody rules.”

You’d think that given the hyper fragility of polling and perceptions anyone showing the slightest weakness and inability to appreciate the situation would be chucked overboard.

  8. Folks
If you go to court for speeding or drink driving and plead you didn’t know the rules…you know exactly what the judge will say. Sack her is the only option.

    • Kraut. Yet Carmel can brutally sack the Commissioner for Children and her colleagues and the media barely blink. That was a direct action inflicted upon vulnerable children which will affect kiddies forever, so there may be double standards at play here.

  9. Yep! She is definitely in the running but she does have some tough competition.

  10. It struck me straight off as a amateur stage managed attempt to bury a bad news story so being able to say, look we’ve fixed it at the announcement on truancy. Which they haven’t.

  11. A very poor look! This just reinforces to voters that still follow news that Labour put higher priority on hiding bad news than fixing or acknowledging problems. More of the “Labour Party before country syndrome” that has become ingrained since 2017. Most don’t appreciate the seriousness or threat to democracy that this sort of behaviour represents. Tinetti should lose her portfollio at the very least for this behaviour. Ignorance is no excuse here and it is hard to believe she didn’t have good advice but chose to ignore it. The other option as Martyn opines is that she is just plain “dumb”.

  12. Everyone in this Government would be out of work if not for the government. I have rarely seen such low performing MPs in my lifetime.

  13. Wonder how many fakes there are at the misery of education in NZ. Seems like easy to be a faker in NZ. This guy had no problem getting a range of jobs in government from being a doctor to being an immigration employee with a fake bachelor of science.

Imposter doctor Yuvaraj Krishnan jailed for forging documents to get medical jobs
    https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/300863090/imposter-doctor-yuvaraj-krishnan-jailed-for-forging-documents-to-get-medical-jobs

Not the only case, showing how easy it is for fakes to get into top government roles, be promoted and upgrade their careers in NZ and be a valued member while running constant frauds!

Fraudster Joanne Harrison’s hidden history: The life and crimes of a million-dollar conwoman
    https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/117926188/fraudster-joanne-harrisons-hidden-history-the-life-and-crimes-of-a-milliondollar-conwoman

Weirdly in the misery of education it seems like that they don’t even bother to get qualified people with actual degrees to work there! Science is officially cancelled at the misery of Ed.

No wonder the kids don’t turn up anymore. Nobody wants to learn woke garbage that has replaced knowledge in NZ. Kids can just google ‘how to cut off a mole’ and apply for jobs as dermatologists doctors it seems and it takes a long time and many well paid jobs, before they are caught.

The justice system is also the first to be taken in by fake documents! In both cases the fraudsters used fake documents in the courts to get lighter sentences and the courts and lawyers did not notice or check!

    • savenz You would be funny if it wasn’t so serious. Thanks again for your valuable insights, with humour too! Cutting off a mole and becoming dermatologists – science fiction?

      • Read the article https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/300863090/imposter-doctor-yuvaraj-krishnan-jailed-for-forging-documents-to-get-medical-jobs ,

the police searched the fake doctor’s google searches and he was researching how to cut off moles after applying for a job as a specialist doctor dermatologist.

You think it might be science fiction, but this guy managed to get many jobs in the NZ health system by claiming he was a doctor and faking his own references. Even the justice systems believed him and didn’t check.

This is not the only case of fraudsters getting high paid jobs and professional roles in NZ! He also worked in immigration but they didn’t notice he faked his science degree! If the staff working in immigration in NZ are CV fraudsters themselves and can’t do a basic recruitment check, what is the chance that they doing their job for the safety of NZ????

These are big problems going forward as now we have grifters and fraudsters throughout NZ public services.

Instead of that woke shit that grifters at the NZ ministry of Ed are pushing maybe they concentrate on ethics and anger management as the main social issues for NZ kids.

They totally ignore that we are seeing increasing teens who go out and commit serious crimes against others and think it’s ok to punch out someone and kill/maim them.

Woke have NZ schools worrying about every other social issue as their priority but not the two main social problems affecting NZ kids. Incompetent and out of touch with their woke ideology that is creating mentally fragile kids in NZ schools – because they are being told all the time that their identity is all that matters and they are not good enough or victims.

        • Also notices how many drug operations in NZ, have ‘inside’ people at customs to make sure their bags are not checked. The rot continues with billions of dollars of social harm being bought into NZ.

Honest society is in decay here on par with the NZ’s record levels of lazy recruitment and lack of real management and oversight by recruiting qualified individuals with real references.

  14. Most transparent government ever.

Sharma was denounced and mocked by the Labour Party for pointing out their coaching over OIA requests.
    Well lookie here.

  15. Labour have a history of funding education adequately and are engaged, inquiring and friendly towards the school officials they deal with. It is a situation which isn’t faced with hard numbers, as it has been by successive National governments.

  16. “the Ministry just chose to spin and obfuscate, which is fine because that’s the job of the Ministry”

It’s NOT fine, and that’s NOT the job of any Ministry. It’s kind of gross how you give her the benefit of the doubt in not knowing her responsibilities as a Minister. All MPs should be aware of their responsibilities, pretty bloody quickly after being put into office, and certainly once they’re pulling in $250K as a Minister. Yet she’s hardly the first not to be in recent years now is she? A lot of the bigger problems we have could be traced back to incompetent MPs, and it’s little things like this which ought to foreshadow screwups to come. Unfortunately they appear to make up a significant majority in parliament.

  17. Another day another minister makes a mistake what a rabble . We all make mistakes when the mistakes keep happening in shows poor management and control

  18. Warning – rant.
I thought Tinetti was said to be a good MP. Perhaps that was measured by the depth of feeling about rightness measure, sort of like a limbo stick in reverse. It seems that is all women now need to get followers – be committed to making change etc. And feel ‘passionate’ about it. Easily said; leave passion to sex, and even there it has to be handled cautiously.

Men of course never feel passion at the wrong times, they are cool, rational, far-seeing, canny in the Scots sense. So both sexes have misapprehensions about proper thinking to fit the problem’s requirements. But women have wanted to catch up with men and surpass them. Hallelujah they are achievers. God help us from idealistic zombies from whatever direction – unrestrained business or unrestrained purity of motive. Hah.

  19. There is truancy at schools, because kids can learn more in the street, in the library, and in in various other real world places, not because they don’t want to learn. As Hone Harawira still says “A society that cannot feed its kids, is not an acceptable society” I paraphrase as I don’t recall his exact words. But this is the most honest thing a politician has ever said about this country. Teachers are struggling, kids are struggling, parents are struggling, we are all struggling. Cost of living crisis is neoliberal wordplay. We have a cost of dying crisis and still we have too many dying too young; and too many living too long. They do not teach staying alive in school and they should!

  20. Good to know you can be a serious criminal including a jailed child abuser who gets admitted to the bar, only to be ‘borrowing’ off your clients within a short period of time! No wonder NZ kids can’t be bothered and have mental health issues.

Lawyer admitted to the bar despite dishonesty and child assault convictions
    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/lawyer-admitted-to-the-bar-despite-dishonesty-and-child-assault-convictions/MP2MPXECSBC47CRZZK4VC3J3UA/

Professionalism in NZ is at an all time low.

  21. You know our education system is a disaster when Asian kids are staying away!!!

According to reports in the media, lots of Asian kids have formed their own study groups because they’ve found they can learn more by NOT going to school, instead using online materials.

Remember when the teachers’ unions used to preach about our ‘world class’ education system? Well, I haven’t heard them use that phrase for a while….

  22. What an avalanche of hatred you seem to have unleashed Martyn.
Labour ministers of education are far preferable to those of the National Party in my book. What a storm in a teacup!
In my view it is the Ministry of Education in all its wokeness that is the problem.

  23. It’s good to hear that our youth are rebelling. It will fortify their free spirits and create some free-thinkers. Good stuff. Hopefully we won’t lose too many along the way. The ramraids should be over soon though. They should really be hitting supermarkets… and banks… though no doubt the latter carries a hefty penalty.

    • Criminal records & a lack of qualifications/education/skills in a world that increasingly demands these things. The doors to a well paid job & a comfortable life are getting harder to squeeze through, even with good qualifications. Welcome to the world of poverty, squalor, misery & incarceration. Welcome to the trash heap.

  24. The ministries job is to spin and obfuscate? I thought it was to set up the education system for success myself but we are living under Labour where everything is spun and there are more comms people running the ‘narrative’ than there are ministers doing their job (when people talk about running the narrative you know the plot is lost as truth is irrelevant in that world). This is why we need a clean out. Labour has got so used to spin and perception that even ok ministers are sucked in to that and all the energy goes there instead of sorting the problem.
