MEDIAWATCH: If no one was listening to Duncan Garner on Today FM, why would you listen to him on a podcast?

Duncan Garner to launch new podcast on MediaWorks

Former Today FM host Duncan Garner is set to launch a new podcast with MediaWorks.

Garner’s role on Today FM as a morning host ended abruptly in March when the MediaWorks board decided to shut the station down.

“This is betrayal,” Garner said at the time as he and Tova O’Brien were pulled off-air.

It should be called ‘This is a Betrayal’, at least that would be funny.

It will end up being called, ‘Why Bother’.

It doesn’t have the budget of Paddy Gower’s new hot mess (which just looks fucking awful) and he’s no where as smart as Jack Tame or John Campbell.

If no one wanted to listen to Duncan on Radio, why would you listen to him on a Podcast?

This is just a sop to Duncs, Polly and Lloyd to stop them taking Mediaworks to court. Mediaworks went into podcasts, then dumped them and is now trying to resuscitate them to give the arrived from Today FM a reason not to sue them.

ChannelX which is replacing Today FM should be a Gen X station.

BTW.

Despite NO funding from NZ on Air, The Working Group just became the top NZ made Weekly Political Podcast in the Apple Podcast Charts!

Again!

The Working Group would like to thank Jacinda Ardern, Marx and Lenin, Black Jesus, Medicinal Cannabis and Gravity Debt Management.

We have an enormous line up of election specials for The Working Group this year that I think will blow everyone’s socks off PLUS we will be simulcasting the show on Freeview this year as well.

Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.

  1. Watch out Martyn. The 27 or 28 political tragics that make your podcast No1, they might switch to Garner. Even if he got only 15 of your listeners you’d suddenly be No 2.

  2. Not too much sympathy for Dunky and some of the other media hacks that eventually get shafted by corporate manoeuvring.

These pundits and presenters have been online, print, and onscreen pests for years in some cases treating politics very cynically, crapping on the working class from a great height, and if not open Torys are often closet Torys.

They think they are “someone” for a certain period then end up playing classic hits at night.

  3. Garner was anti cannabis right up to the final 2 weeks leading up to the referendum, then changed his mind and started saying the opposite but alot more quieter than he had been. Garner can just disappear as far as Im concerned.

  4. Credit where it’s due – it’s hard to front TV and Radio -as Martyn knows- and Garner fronts well, I think he can also interview well.
But he’s no rocket scientist and the more opinions and reckons we hear the more we realize the lack of real depth. He was best as a journalist asking and reporting real questions.

Gower is a waste of space

  5. Yes I agree the Working Group is ‘real’ political debate. The sort of debate the other media outlets used to be good at many years ago.

  6. Duncan Garner used to be ok before the media went woke. If they let him go back to being himself it might be ok but I doubt mediaworks will allow that to happen. And isnt this area kind of over egged at this stage with Bridges and a range of others all in this space.

Give me Dunc over Paddy or Jack any day.

  7. Professional rivalry takes many forms. Duncan’s heart is in the right place and he does good work. Bomber is a bigger raver but also does good work.
You both bring and share information that helps us process what is going on in the big bad world. Thanks.
