Two prisoners at Mt Eden Corrections Facility were already rioting when another lit a fire in his cell, it’s now been revealed.
RNZ earlier reported a man started a small fire in his prison cell on Sunday evening, triggering fire crew attendance. It’s now been revealed staff were already dealing with two other prisoners who were destroying a recreation room in a different unit at the same time.
Corrections Association vice president Paul Dennehy said the men were put in the room while staff searched their cell for tattoo equipment and weapons.
…this after this…
Police still investigating incident at youth justice facility
Emergency services were called to what was only described as “an incident” at Te Puna Wai o Tūhinapō in Rolleston, Christchurch.
The facility is an Oranga Tamariki – Ministry for Children – youth justice residence that has a capacity for up to 40 young people.
…our desire to punish has an enormous cost and it’s a cost that the underfunded prison system can barely cover.
What we are seeing here is the result of understaffing and over crowded prisons, it is only a matter of time before a prison riot breaks out.
What we are facing across NZ is the lack of well funded universal services.
We don’t have well funded universal services because the capacity of the State has been purposely restricted.
The 30 year neoliberal experiment cut the State back to the bone and the political project for the Right is to constantly starve the State of revenue so it can’t redistribute.
We need a State with more capacity.
We need more Nurses, more drs, more hospitals, more police, more Army, more Teachers, more schools, more corrections officers, better public transport, better prisons, our own pharmaceutical industry, and we can only fund that by taxing the fucking rich!
Tax the Banks, tax the speculators, tax the rich and fund the greater capacity State we urgently require.
Prison Riots will force this debate.
Increasingly having independent opinion in a mainstream media environment which mostly echo one another has become more important than ever, so if you value having an independent voice – please donate here.
I agree with the many wants you list for a better society .To meet the cost it would help if governments of all strips did not waste so much on trying to reinvent the wheel and public servants that earn big money to huff and puff and hirer consultants to tell them what a great job they are doing .
We could pay for much of this by tapping into the vast oil and gas deposits out there in our coastal waters.
I agree.
No consequences is the reason.
If there are no consequences why are they locked up in the first place?
Subsequent consequences.
Apparently ACT is going to allow concealed carry to keep citizens safe.
Agreed I could imagine that and gun protection becoming a normal that’s if citizens become fearfull enough
Rubbish. If Australia and Great Britain won’t even consider that kind of lunacy for their citizens, there is no way in hell our Government will. Your Dirty Harry vigilante fantasy’s will have to remain the fuel for your wet dreams.
“We need more Nurses, more drs, more hospitals, more police, more Army, more Teachers, more schools, more corrections officers, better public transport, better prisons, our own pharmaceutical industry, and we can only fund that by taxing the fucking rich!” Yes we do but No we don’t….an ‘envy tax’ might make you feel better but in practical terms, you can harvest a lot more money for redeplyment to the fontlines by getting rid of a good chunk of the flabby overpaid meddling self-serving bureaucracy that lies between these font-line people and the taxpayer.
“What we are seeing here is the result of understaffing and overcrowded prisons, it is only a matter of time before a prison riot breaks out.”
You’re 100% correct.
So, Labour shutting down those new prison builds that were planned by National wasn’t such a good idea?
Oh hey, finally the question doesn’t get censored! It only took ~24 hours.
Mods on holiday.
This Labour Government hasn’t had a good idea, indeed they are ditching what they thought were good ideas.
Hiding…
and the nats consistently underfunding the service, introducing private prisons and putting staff on poverty wages were good ideas andrew?
My money would be on a Serco prison going up in flames first. Rangipo maybe?
Maybe, but Rangipo isnt a Serco prison
Didn’t it used to be? Or was it just Wiri and My Eden?
