National State of Emergency declared – TVNZ keeps broadcasting a cheap British TV game show

For only the 3rd time in our history, NZ has declared a National State of Emergency.

The damage caused by Cyclone Gabriel is only now being realised after many criticised the elevated warnings.

We still have a day of damaging weather in front of us but what can be said is that life threatening events are occurring now with people on roofs and entire communities cut off.

This is likely to be an enormously damaging and dangerous weather event, driven by the Cyclone’s historically low hectoPascals.

As we struggle to comprehend the damage, it is embarrassing that the public broadcaster
TVNZ has continued with their normal programming while The AM Show on a private network keeps broadcasting coverage of this National State of Emergency.

Someone at TVNZ Management needs sacking.

This is a disgraceful lack of leadership by the public broadcaster.

  1. For the first time in literally decades I turned on the TV to listen to the breakfast shows. Flicking between channels, TV3 was miles better: On the scene and more relevant.

  2. what do you expect Martyn? This is part of the reason why many Kiwis simply do not have much faith in the media, apart from a few media outlets, such as The Daily Blog…

  3. Yes my thoughts exactly. Public money helps to keep TVNZ going and it has a responsibility to broadcast in the event of emergencies. It’s shameful on a day of extreme weather and many people in danger both physically and mentally to carry on as if nothing’s happened.

    • TVNZ need to look across the ditch at ABC AU. NZ is missing live media programming during events, we all have to wait for the six o’clock news.

ABC Australia has great programming, Insiders, 7:30, Australian of the year awards, four corners, Q&A. Not to mention live coverage of any news.

TVNZ morning show were shooting a Donald Trump doll the other day with an a salt gun.

The working group should go live every Tuesday’s I reckon. Martyn, take a look at insider, a great live weekly political show for ideas.

  4. Only the third time in our history.
    Is this Hipkins covid moment.
Will he be on TV daily giving us updates?
Will the Minister for Auckland be with him?
The Labour Government’s propaganda machine about to unleash.
Never miss an opportunity to use someone else’s misery to look good.
    Sincerity?

    • Makes me think of WHAuden 1 Sept 1939 –
      Faces along the bar
      Cling to their average day:
The lights must never go out,
      The music must always play,
      All the conventions conspire
      To make this fort assume
      The furniture of home;
Lest we should see where we are,
      Lost in a haunted wood,
      Children afraid of the night
Who have never been happy or good.

  5. “Someone at TVNZ Management needs sacking”
More likely 3 or 4 people at TVNZ need sacking.

At one point, they did put up a banner, which is only slightly better than relying on international broadcasters as they did several years ago. Then they tried to blame the BBC’s Nik Gowing.

Now watch them try and spin and bullshit their way out of it.
I guess the newsroom star autocue readers were all out being interviewed by the Woman’s Weekly

  6. Same thing occured after the September 2010 Darfield earthquake. I had to tune in to Australia’s news channel to find out what the situation was.

    • I remember tuning into one of the offical channels supposed to broadcast civil defence, only to get an interview about someones cat. Now sure, I care whether their cat’s ok, but it’s not really what I needed to know at the time.

  7. Actually confronting the reality of being a public broadcaster in NZ/Ao would be akin to the top bananas in TVNZ to going out in the street in an old raincoat, flashing. ‘We’ they all agree ‘do not do that sort of thing’.

      • And TVNZ is NOT the state. It is a nasty, crappy little imitation of a private, market-led entity. And it has all the worst features of a private entity. What do you expect when you put a man from the bloody marketing industry in charge of it all?
TVNZ needs to be restored to the quality state broadcaster that it used to be 40 years ago. The last thing it needs is to be sold off: it already behaves as if it had been.

    • ” Another reason to sell TVNZ. The Free Market delivers better than the state. ”

If the market delivers better than the state !

That was the marketing behind the revolution in 1984 and Ruth’s version of Margaret Thatcher’s ” there is no such thing as society “in 1991.

And if you haven’t prospered under unregulated capitalisim you deserve to be poor and a rich man’s slave.

    • EXAMPLE OF A PRIVATISED PUBLIC SERVICE THAT IS NOW BETTER AND/OR CHEAPER if you please wilson, not blather and ideological ranting…just 1 example in NZ….G’WAN DAREZYA

  8. There is a good case to make to the public for improving public broadcasting. Unfortunately Labour have given the portfolio to ministers who have failed completely to make the case for it. Curran was sacked and Faafoi had completely checked out of all of his ministerial positions. By the time it got to Jackson it was too late, the window had closed and little effort had been made to convince people it would be of benefit.

    • ” Unfortunately Labour have given the portfolio to ministers who have failed completely to make the case for it ”
      100% Bryn you nailed it.

  9. what happens when you live in a 3rd world country that neglects it’s infrastructure
….this is a bad one but could have at least been ameliorated
