PODCAST: Hostage Taking, Prisoner Exchanges and Back-Channels – Buchanan and Manning

A View from Afar - S03 E25 with Paul G. Buchanan and Selwyn Manning. Hostage Taking, Prisoner Exchanges and Back-Channels.

PODCAST – In this, the 25th episode of A View from Afar for 2022 political scientist Dr Paul Buchanan and host Selwyn Manning examine how hostage taking, prisoner exchanges, and establishing diplomatic back-channels work and how they are used by states during times of conflict.

Specifically, Paul and Selwyn examine:

  • How hostage diplomacy appears to increase where authoritarians rise and are emboldened to challenge international norms
  • How states use prisoner exchanges to establish two-way common-ground
  • How back-channels can also be established through prisoner exchanges.
  • Is this what we are seeing in the Russian-Ukraine conflict?
  • What dangers arise when warring opponents reach a deadly stalemate in the battlefield?

INTERACTION WHILE LIVE: Paul and Selwyn invite and encourage you to interact while they are live with questions and comments. 1. I’ve heard that Putins health has deteriorated to the point of being as good as a vegetable (unconventional sources, but we’ll see). Whatever he had and the medications etc contributed a lot to his murderous decisions. His generals etc are holding the fort but are looking for the exits. They’re afraid of persecution for war crimes. This is the beginning of the end. Lot’s of behind the scenes negotiations taking place. Jmo

  2. I’ve heard the moon is made of green cheese and unicorns gambol in the paddocks of the south island, I read it on the intramawebbything so it must be true///huh sinic?

    • GG, here’s another one for you: Trump will escape being held accountable, will go to the middle east under the guise of a golf tournament or similar. He won’t return to the USA and will die in the middle east. You heard it here first.
