Groan. Here we go.

Revealed: TVNZ will lose $100m in advertising revenue by the end of the decade

The Government’s new public media entity will witness the loss of a third of TVNZ’s existing commercial revenue, equating to about $100 million a year, within five years, according to advice from officials.

This lost revenue will need to be supplemented by taxpayer funding from the Crown, which is forecast to contribute $211m a year to the entity over 30 years, roughly half of which will be used to plug the shortfall in advertising.

The commercial details were revealed in a late draft of a business case for the Government’s RNZ-TVNZ merger, obtained by the National Party.

The party’s broadcasting spokeswoman Melissa Lee said the documents showed the Government was wilfully destroying TVNZ’s commercial model and forcing the taxpayer to pick up the tab.

Right.

So a TVNZ/RNZ merger will see less crass commercialisation bullshit on the Public Broadcaster to the tune of $100 million, well, that’s $100m that the private media like NZME, Newshub and Mediaworks can pick up!

That’s great!

NZME, Mediaworks and Newshub can broadcast Fuck Boy Island and all its mutant offspring plus all that advertising for that mutation and they can stop bitching about NZ on Air not giving them less money when there’s $100m in advertising out there for them to pick up.

Yet the private media are still bitching aren’t they?

NZME are just like farmers, students and feminists, in that they are always complaining.

TVNZ losing $100m because it isn’t a crass commercial operation any longer simply means that $100m can go to the private media companies for them to compete with, why are they endlessly whinging and pretending that’s politics?

Melissa Lee is a joke Public Broadcasting Spokesperson who is effectively arguing for more Fuck Boy Island on TVNZ, not less.

  1. Great, an extra $100m per year subsidy to deliver the Labour Party’s TVNZ fantasy of public TV broadcasting content that Helen Clarke would approve of.

And no ads because they interrupt the John Pilger documentary on Cuba’s health system…

    • So you are fine with our TV channels being crammed full of MasterChef, Grand Designs and Fboy Island then?

I guess the answer is yes.

      • Your approach to comments is pure Twitter bile.

And in answer to your question,
if you want to watch tv for free, you’d better get to like what lots of other people want to watch, because that’s how it gets paid for – eyeballs for advertising.

        • So you are opposed to any form of public service TV in this country then? You just want people to have to put up with MasterChef. Goes to show how you have no ambition or desire to make NZ a better place, a place where we have decent TV, a decent health system, and decent wages.

  2. nothing wrong with that ada…

whatever happened to the white elephant that was supposed to be freeview? how much did that cost not to mention the compulsary ‘boxes’ the 4 ‘terrestial’ channels with repeats an hour later on another channel…no point, just trying to make the list look fuller…foreign language channels with no subs so fuck knows what govt propaganda they are putting out to their people and religious nutters, the rest of the bandwidth wasted…so yea the bright multi channel nirvana worked out well there mr key thanks for nothing.

    • The technology white elephant that was freeview points to the foolishness of the political class getting outside their expertise and trying to pick how and where technology will go.

$100m, $100m there – pretty soon you are talking real money (in government terms). That $100m per year can be better spent elsewhere, doing those things only the government will pay for.

  3. What is the 100 million currently spent on?
if the current low brow shit content is consequently reduced then the 100 million spent on producing it won’t be missed either.
    What’s not to like?

  4. According to Damien Grant today in Stuff…

“RNZ and TVNZ will be merged into a new entity under the Aotearoa New Zealand Public Media Bill and, by law, this new entity must be governed by a board that has skills and experience in te ao Māori and tikanga Māori, and engage with Māori about relevant strategies and policies”.

Whatever the misleading rationale we were given by Labour for this merger, it looks nothing like better broadcasting and journalism that was suggested and entirely about Maori political ideology and control.

A lot of public money spent under the auspices of benefits for the public but zero gain for the public!

  5. Why do capitalist not believe in capitalism? I mean, if a business can’t survive in the marketplace then, fuck’em! They die?
