Is it wrong to be feel shameful glee at how shit The Block turned out to be?

Kiwi fans call for The Block to be axed after finale’s dismal profits

Kiwi couples on The Block New Zealand have netted some of the lowest profits in the show’s history, as fans call for the show to be axed.

Excuse me, allow me to clear my throat.
I despise renovation porn in a country with 27 000 on emergency housing wait lists, where more children live in cars than when Labour first entered power in 2017 and where we spend a million a day kettling beneficiaries into dangerous motels.
I like that The Block was a screaming failure, not as a personal attack on these grasping desperate teams, they are just a symptom of the problem, but the whole concept is disgusting and perverse and I for one love that it failed!
Property speculation in this country and the way homes have been commodified into an asset base rather than homes is one of the great generations robberies ever committed in this country.
The Governments pitiful state housing build program, the refusal to give renters any security and the recent lack of turn out at the local elections are all part of the same problem.
I don’t believe solutions are possible any longer, we are too stupid and greedy to change things now, I just yearn for the flames to burn and watching the Block fail so abysmally was pure poetic justice.

  1. my considered opinion on this issue and looking at all the parameters weighing up the outcomes my sober conclusion is….fuck them and the donkey they rode in on.

  2. It’s a great lesson for all those under the age of 40. Property values are cyclical. While the long term trend is always up there are troughs. We have been through the largest boom in modern history – here comes the largest fall

  3. Hey, it’s a “reality” show that has now shown us the reality that most of the profits in previous seasons simply came from rising land values. It is also a show that recognises most kiwis want a stake in their society by owning their own home.

There is/was a real housing crisis and it was talked up as an attack on Labour by MSM and it was talked up to a level where voters both left and right wanted something done. Labour had the Electoral Capital to do something big, useful, and decisive, that looked good caring and kind. Electoral capital can be invested, spent or wasted. If Kiwibuild had been run properly at scale it would have been an investment in thankful middle-class Labour voters and their wider families for generations. If Labour had invested in scale State Housing it would have been an investment in thankful poorer Labour voters and their wider families for generations AND it would have been a source of non-tax government income for generations and a capital item against which borrowing for other government programs could be made. Instead, Key-like in a crisis they had to give money to banks (well believed they had to) which wasted their electoral capital – all that borrowing and nothing to show for it.

Meanwhile, private developers have built so many apartments in Auckland that increased immigration is now required to sell and fill them. And they are still spending electoral capital with Moteliers.

Labour voters are like disappointed Block Contestants, all that support for a miserly result. Too sad.

    • Well the rightwing Natzact havent added to the social housing stock for about 25 years. They are useless and it will be the same if they returned to the government benches. They are into property speculation like key’s government.
