What is this new madness?

Rachel Smalley: Smash & Grabs – Why don’t we ban hoodies from malls?

I had no idea Rachel Smalley was still a thing, Today FMs ratings are so low they make her existence a moot point.

If Today FMs ratings fall in a forest, did Rachel Smalley ever exist?

Rach is frightened because those children that John Key threw out onto the streets using fake meth results in state houses, the children who lived in cars and the children raised without parents because they were locked up in National’s draconian prison complex are scaring Rach and she doesn’t want to go to her local mall anymore.

Boo fucking hoo.

Her solution is to ban hoodies in Malls.

I’m not having a rich white frightened karen tell me what I can and can’t wear to a fucking mall!

This isn’t Iran!

Rach wants a morality police removing hoodies does she?

Shouldn’t rich white people be forced to confront the children forgotten by capitalism?

Most of these kids are from broken homes serviced by an underfunded welfare state that sees them as clients.

Shouldn’t that miscarriage of social policy be force fed to rich white people who vote in right wing Governments to get their juicy tax cuts?

Shouldn’t rich white Volk taste what an underfunded welfare system vomits up?

These children are the legacy of John Key’s draconian welfare program.

Here’s a crazy idea Rach, how about we didn’t throw all these state tenants out onto the street due to fake meth contamination hysteria?

How about we didn’t allow them to live in cars?

How about we didn’t lock their parents up in the private prison industry?

How about we properly fund child care services?

NO! Far better we ban hoodies, that’ll work!

This crime wave won’t stop because the cost of living crisis is about to get far far far far worse.

I see these kids attacking a society that already doesn’t give a fuck about them.

Banning hoodies as a response to that is just so fucking disconnected from reality.

  1. She asks “Isn’t it better to keep everyone safe”, well, who exactly was in danger? Is money a person now?

Also I thought hoodies already were banned from malls – was that illegal? Did I miss that getting slapped down?

  2. So would it be ok if a poor brown person said this instead of a rich white woman ? Or could a poor white woman say it ? Or a rich purple person? Fact: CCTV has been not that useful in my neighbourhood when the kids rifling and stealing cars are wearing hoodies. Fact: Banks and WINZ make visitors remove their headgear, a nuisance for fashionistas who spend hours on their appearance, or olds hiding hearing aids, and others generally.

  3. It is mainly the parents of these children that are to blame for much of problem and they grew up under Clark so do we blame her as well as Key.

    • There you go victim shaming again Trev. Next thing you will be saying you pay too much tax, or that there is too much red tape or or or insert vapid talking point here. Try blaming workers for inflation that seems your speed. Think you oughta stop it, your getting too excited…I can see your groundswell…

      • Sounds like Mike Hosking but sporting a blond wig?
Nek minit, she’ll be planning to play Barry Manilow music in malls as a cruel aural deterrent.

      • It’s ironic though:
There’s indignation about women not being forced to wear head coverings?
There’s indignation about young people choosing to wear head coverings?

    • I would have thought that it was the lack of parenting along with any parents involved with the child being poor examples of responsible adult behaviour.
I tend to agree with Martyns thoughts on the need for better social support but any society that encourages single parent families the way we do will always run the risk that children end up missing out. The horse has well and truly bolted regarding societies values and I do not think that women should be forced to stay in unwanted relationships or have to adopt/abort any pregnancy outside of marriage so society needs to accept that the freedom people go on about requires sufficient taxpayer support to pick up the pieces. I would rather see that support in decent housing, education and decent jobs that prevent problems instead of increasing the justice/health system to deal with the consequences.

      • Bonnie, how on earth do we encourage single mothers. I get so bored with the endless bashing of them, a woman gets pregnant unexpectedly, she does not want an abortion, she is a single mother and we, all of us, spend time condemning her, not supporting her in our communities. As a parent of 6, one night one of my daughters got out of the window and walked for 5 miles to someones house. Is this my fault, should I have know she was going to do this?

    • Trevor that is complote nonsense. You cannot blame parents for their poverty, for having to work endless hours, having to pull their kids from school so they can get a minimum wage job to help everybody eat.

I blame every government since the mid eighties, who moved us from a caring society to a me me me society and where human beings became numbers, cannon fodder and of course the great ‘human resources’ for shitty little jobs. We sold off so much including our soul!

      • I can appreciate that being a parent is almost an impossible task with the modern communication methods giving access to your children to any nutcase with a device. Moral values have changed especially since the 60’s so what was once considered as mostly a perk of marriage is now something that many feel entitled to even if it is against the will of the other person, often it in consentual and I can accept that. My comment mentions that the freedoms that society demands have costs so decent funding should be available to reduce the consequences. It is reasonably well known that females with better education are less likely to have teenage pregnancy and giving young people the opportunity to get secure employment with options to own a home at a sensible price would help motivate young people to achieve better things.
You are not the only parent with wayward children, my sister found out that her daughter was letting her boyfriend into her bedroom via the window at night.
While I accept that we need the dpb and believe that we need even better services to stop/reduce the welfare trap it is also true that the existence of the benefit is a motivating factor in some girls choices.

  4. It is delicious when champagne socialists turn feral when their lives are affected by crime. Suddenly they become red necks. This proposal is as dumb as a sack of hammers but that is all the left have as they can’t dare to acknowledge the root cause of intergenerational welfare as this is the central tenant of their worldview.

    • Intergenerational welfare is the central tenet of the left’s worldview?? No Frank – intergenerational welfare is a disastrous consequence of a well-intended policy (you might recall Mr. William Blake’s pithy expression about such situations). It would be fairer to say that on the left there is widespread denial of the problem of intergenerational welfare and its downstream effects.

  5. The failure of homeless children is the failure of a country that simply does not care about homeless children and their equally homeless parents. Labour will use them every now and then to garner votes from them, and as currently is the case will spend up to 1 million a night to house them in rundown motels where the owner have their own security forces err gang to keep the ‘tenants’ who have no rights in their rooms. National will pretend that they are all bludgers. Fact is some are bludgers the majority is not, and there are people who work that are being warehoused away from the nice and polite soceity of whom both – N and L and G and A are part of.
Fact is that the current do nothing approach by Labour is making it worse. Fact is people will vote for N simply because Labour did fuck all in regards to crime.
Make Hoodies illegal in Malls? Malls will pretty much shut down one after the other once the credit crunch hits, and people really don’t have any money left after paying essentials.
These ramraiding kids are the result of a society that cares about an overpriced three bedroom, two lounges, open plan kitchen with a three car garage, but has no fucks to give about nurses, teachers and affordable housing. And both Labour and National carry that bucket of ‘not giving a fuck’. And fwiw, its worse when Labour does it as they are supposedly the party that represents the poor lumpenproletariat and the workers.
    Something gotta give.

      • Agree Michal, but ACT listens, sees the pain and has plans to fix it.
ACT has the answers because we have listened to the people.
People want less Maorification of New Zealand, we’ll have a referendum.
Businesses want less tax and compliance, we’ll give them 20% business tax.
People want more money in their pocket and a fair tax across the board, we’ll give them 20% flat tax with zero tax on the first $20,000 and 20% GST, but not on fresh food grown in New Zealand.
ACT, great partner for National and not as flakey and old as Winston.

  6. This is where I get confused (easily done) Bomber. You keep lamenting woke identity politics but quite happily play the rich white women card.

  7. it gets cold in wintertime NZ….do hoods on jackets count?

must dig out my old seditionaries destroy shirt and see what the numpty makes of that.

  8. What is truly ridiculous about todays’ mainstream NZ media is they are not a terribly bright bunch of people when all things considered. How they achieved these roles of speaking to the public makes me think they are a bunch of clowns. And because I view them as clowns I cannot take what they say as serious

The media of today is a shadow of its former self.

There was once a time when journalists like Sandra Coney and Phillida Bunkle achieved results due to their incredible ability to investigate into events and matters of the past, even back then, that resulted in major changes and even the Cartwright Inquiry.

What todays’ journalists have become is something that proves how bad journalism has turned out to be when politicians, a political party and politics has any control over the journalistic world.

Todays’ journalists do not have a great track record. They are forever etched on my memory as the ones chasing after a limo in pursuit of the new leader of National or having the inability to be capable of having intelligent thought and questioning even National MPs in great depth.

And so of late Rachel Smalley avoids the topic of deeply questioning National MPs and resorts to demanding NZers do not wear Hoodies in public???!!! Way to go Rachel. There are more far reaching problems in the world than people wearing hoodies in public!!!!!

At one time wearing masks was taboo but thanks to COVID we have had to adjust to the times.

Wearing Hoodies can also be considered a health issue especially in the winter months.

The more I hear of todays’ journalists and their “Zero Assumptions” as had been advertised on TVNZ the less I take them seriously.

But all in all I do miss the Sandra Coney’s and the Phillida Bunkles that should be in todays’ mainstream NZ media.

  9. The malls are privately owned, so they can refuse you entry unless you’re wearing a dinner jacket if they so choose.

  10. She should be use to it!

Hoods, pillowcases with a few holes in them to see through. A broomstick too probably is her mode of transport.
What kinda mushrooms is she brewing?

  11. Martyn – never fall over – the crash would deafen us whether you are in a wood or not, – and we can’t go without the witticisms and irony and inspired rants and the facing up to the reality of the present and its bathos as well as pathos.

  12. ‘Why it’s old man Withers from the amusement park!”……

“And I would have got away with too if it wasn’t for you snooping kids and that Rachel Smalley banning hoodies”

  13. Hoodrat culture is a new thing for snotty youth, I don’t think it’s just a “poverty, broken families, lack of fresh fruits n’ veggies” thing that hand wringing wets think can be fixed with cuddles, “youth facilities” and that
    wrap around care.

    • Ironically they did have “youth facilities”, but people like you wanted government spending slashed, so they were closed. Not that they work anyway. Like prisons, they would have been handed over to the gangs, who would proceed to beat, rape and shank weaker prisoners, as a way of enforcing the punishment aspect of prisons.

      • What’s a “youth facility” anyway. Is it like a Lions Club circa 1977, or a drop in centre where the kids can breakdance, play hacky-sack and record hip-hop videos?

  14. In a dog-eat-dog society, these kids simply decided to refuse to be eaten. They want to be the ones that eat.

And I would assure everyone, the feeling that Smalley and her wealthy Karen mates have towards them is entirely mutual.

    • Agree millsy. Sad though. We’re (people in general) not all dog-eat-dog types though. Small blessings I guess

  15. No so long ago was at a mall where the security guard asked a youth to lower the hoodie from his head. Just as a Muslim woman walked past wearing a burka. I asked the security guard what the difference was between a hoodie and a burka. Got asked to leave so never been back to Sylvia Park. Their loss.

Wonder if the Smalley can answer what the difference between a hoodie, burka or hijab is and if I consider a hoodie is part of my culture (pale stale male) Why cant I wear it in the mall.

    • Gerrit
There are practical differences apart from cultural. Hoodies tend to hide the face (and possibly the tattoos of Love and Hate on it or whatever). They are worn by people of not the highest class, (I should know because I often wear one).

A burka (burqa) is all enveloping. You probably meant a hijab. I think before you throw round criticisms about culture you need to know what you are talking about.
(I checked on google to be accurate)! https://www.wise-geek.com/what-is-the-difference-between-a-hijab-and-a-burqa.htm
…Unlike the hijab, the burqa completely covers the wearer’s face, including her eyes. A mesh square sewn into the burqa allows a woman to see what is in front of her. …The covering of a woman’s face and eyes is an important distinction between the hijab and a burqa.

A hijab is – The hijab generally does not cover a woman’s face, although she may choose to wear a face veil in addition to the headscarf.
A woman with her face covered with a veil may well be considered suspiciously!

  16. Pretty sue the meth results weren’t fake were they?

The reaction to low levels of meth in a house, was certainly well over done.
Mainly thanks to media hype and shock horror headlines.

  17. And the Housing New Zealand tenants were evicted by whoever the boss was at HNZ, that made that decision…

Not sure if Key had anything to do with it.

  18. I feel a Marama Davidson moment coming on when you mention Smalley why do we bother with the priliged ones f….. N bullshit

  19. “Rach” is still around? I am not keen on hoodies either, but not because working class people wear them, or they are “scary”. They have always just seemed a pointless garment to me for street wear. A lid and sweater combined, no thanks unless you are in a Bronx boxing gym or something.

And who could forget Ms Smalley’s attempt at stereotyping New Zealand women’s builds–“Lardoes and Heifers”?
    https://www.stuff.co.nz/entertainment/tv-radio/9894903/Rachel-Smalley-calls-Kiwi-women-bunch-of-lardos

  20. The problem is they are the issue of feral individuals;women with no care as to the consequences of their sexual activity and feral tomcats (men) who are not made to be the responsible of their tomcatting.
And a social welfare that spends more time changing its than doing its job.

    • Paul
I have the feeling that Paul in the bible was a bit down on various human practices concerning sex. It seems you may be the same. Sex isn’t something vile, or prescribed like medicine, it’s a life force – it’s normal!! But it’s hard to know about the emotions, the passion felt, and the restraint needed, when you’re young. And because it is often spoken about so disparagingly as you have, there is not enough open discussion and explanation about it and why it is better to hold off from beginning at a young age, or stimulating interest through sexually-oriented films etc.

And babies and children of unmarried people are not horrible examples of depravity or to be disdained because they and their young parents need extra care from society because of their role. It is a warped society that hates young parents or mothers and can’t find room for humanity in busy lives of acquiring money and material possessions. Take more interest in young people, and society will have a better, more effective system of living, and more mature parents. But help for parents with life education, and when under stress, would also be reaching for a higher level of animal behaviour to meet how other animals behave to their young, with us falling way below a lot of the time. I bet you have never thought along these lines. We humans are so up ourselves!

And females do have difficulties making their way in the world as seen in this story about their poverty, lower pay etc. https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/476788/gender-pay-gap-plays-big-part-in-food-insecurity-auckland-mission
Men too are trying to adjust to a world without certainty of being able to work hard and ‘get on’. Dumping sour criticism on everyone is looking at the outcomes of poor societal practices and traditional behaviour which helps to ensure the continuance of it because there isn’t any goodwill going into making change with ‘Kindness and Practicality going together for better’.
