Department of Conservation aquatic director Elizabeth Heeg said at this stage it was not known why so many Hector’s dolphins had washed up dead over the past four months.

“It’s actually quite amazing; they were the most abundant of all our dolphin species that we see in close, once upon a time. It’s hard for us to imagine what it was like, but there are scientists quoting that you wouldn’t go anywhere around Aotearoa on a boat, without seeing Hector’s and Māui dolphins.
“They were everywhere, and they were familiar, and they were common. We have terms that describe them as ‘abundant’, ‘common’, ‘numerous’, ‘frequently observed’, and ‘plentiful’ – right up until the 1960s.”…

McGrath believed there was still time to save the species, if set net fishing was phased out for all inshore habitats.
“The way set nets work, they take out everything, they catch target species, but the catch everything else as well, so you can imagine the waste and the bycatch of protected taonga species; sea birds, seals, other dolphins, orca, whales, all getting caught in these nets as well. The ideal situation would be an immediate transition away from set nets, into other methods that are more selective.”

NZs can’t cope with big ideas that match big changes in conditions.
There are too many elderly people eking out their lives. The government has said that they can stay home if they want and receive support until they are too frail to manage, but …

In the West Coast the DHB has made the decision that the contracted services may not be able to be there for three months. This is a government promise being tossed aside.

One of my family members wants all his neighbours to come in and help. hands-on yet he hasn’t helped out with their needs much, perhaps drive them to the airport. The old have become like aged aristocrats needing
servants to cater for their whims. He can well afford to get himself residential accommodation, and has opted in with certain helpers with gifts of money but doesn’t act to ensure he has the option opf institutional round the clock care which he demands. Family have their own requirements and duties and can’t drop everything to cater for him and his demands.

Another relative had her mother living with her, with advanced dementia. She followed her around the house repeating questions and the same conversation till it destroyed the love and connection that she felt for her parent. Seagulls and their young are often seen in this situation, but there are social demands for humans.

When the referendum for euthanasia went to the country people refused to approve it even for people ALREADY DYING who wanted to choose the time, with safeguards, and careful measures of consent.
You still can’t die in an enlightened modern way when you want. The government and the irresponsible conservatives. the authoritarians and uncaring, want to have you trapped like a bug stuck in jam. Does anything go on in people’s brains or do they just see pictures of golden futures flating in the clouds?
