So let’s get this completely straight – NZ Cops are about to have the power of God and no one noticed?

One of the most alarming parts about the police gaining the omnipotence of God with real time face surveillance software that will enable the Police to find you anywhere at anytime through all live CCTV feeds is how the Police have quietly and very secretly gained this technology from human rights abusing corporates without anyone noticing.

Th Police could get it past Stuart Nash because the Nashy is easy to distract, but Poto Williams is supposed to be smarter.

Let me be very clear here, no one has yet clicked that what the Police are really doing with all these photos and using them with face surveillance software is to formulate real time protocols so that the Police are able to tap into live stream CCTV feeds and use the face surveillance in real time.

They aren’t gaining a static technology, they are getting real time, full spectrum omnipotence without a fucking word spoken to the rest of the Government let alone the civil rights watchdogs!

Folks – do any of you trust the NZ Police with that level of unchecked power?

It will be like the Eye of Mordor, but run by the cops!

I don’t care what the justification is, that level of seamless real time mass surveillance is an incredibly dangerous power for any branch of a Government to have unfettered access to!

What happens when the extension to this is AI targeted policing using algorithms to decide Policing resources?

None of this is even surfacing right now.

At some point the scope of what the Police are trying to establish here is going to bob to the surface of public scrutiny.

The Labour Government better have some good answers when it does.

  1. Poto Williams and smart – there’s an oxymoron if ever I saw one. And no woketards that’s not racist that is just an observation based on performance to date. When Simeon Brown is moping the floor with her in the debating chamber you have to ask whether or not Williams is the right person for the job.

Onto the subject matter – I agree. There is a pattern emerging across all spectrums and it ain’t democratic at all.

  2. Not quite the power of God – God would just smite the felons on the spot, or say ‘ Judge not lest you be judged’, and maybe dispense with the judicial process, and save tax payer money, by tossing them straight into Hell – or Dipton, Eketahuna, Tawa, or one of the sadly- receding West Coast glaciers.

If this technology can nab wicked gangsters making and peddling methamphetamine and importing and using lethal weapons which kill people, and if it can save a nurse going on duty at 5am from getting killed by adolescents in a stolen car, and if it means that firefighters and cops and para medics and other first responders do not have their peace of mind and tranquility wrecked, repeatedly, by terrible scenes and sights, then it may be worth considering.

I’d be more concerned about the police recruiting school leavers- if they do. They have limited life experience, are often emotionally immature, especially males who can be on hormonal overload, and are less socially skilled than females – and often stay that way for life. Plus as arrogant as a J L – R.

    • What if the technology doesn’t do any of those things that you listed SW? It seems the Police targets have already been identified – young Maori kids who are minding their own business. Wouldn’t it be great if instead, there was technology that could miraculously identify the likes of white collar criminals and tax evaders, or better still, could tackle the most pervasive crime that fertilises most others – poverty!

      • Aom – I think the photographing of young boys is a separate issue, which is currently being investigated, and it certainly shouldn’t be an either/ or situation, with white collar criminals and tax evaders being ‘ favoured’ at the expense of anybody else.

Do we need technology to identify crime-drivers like poverty ? I don’t think so. Masses of information has been published about this, including by reputable NGO’s. Heaven forbid that govt be given any excuses to say that they need more info about it. They know. Not only do they know, but they have the gall to send hungry people off to charity food banks to feed their bellies.

        • I don’t think photographing minors IS a seperate issue. They have been doing it for a long time and this once there was a staunch family from Whanganui who knew what was happening and called them out. Big thanks to Charlene and Naomi. It may seem pretty rare for police to arrest one of their own but it’s now turning out that way. All use of this bumble soul stealing tech should be made illegal immediately no questions asked.

  3. NZ Police intimidation of (at least) one NZ citizen.

THE WORLD THAT IS BEING CREATED IS NOT FOR REAL HUMANS

NZ POLICE IN A PLAYGROUND somewhere in my country.
around about 17 minutes – give or take a few seconds = police intimidation!

I took a complaint to the Police Complaints Authority years ago about 2003 – what a total SNOW JOB!
I acknowledge that there are good people in the NZ Police. I also know (from when I was 13 y.o.) that there are shits in the NZ Police – all of whom need to be exposed for what they are.

  4. From todays Herald, read it and ask, is it really that bad that cops photograph young people walking the streets in the early hours of the morning? For me, I am glad cops are stopping people wandering my neighborhood at the wee small hours.

    WARNING: DISTRESSING CONTENT

A 14-year-old boy who lived with one of New Zealand’s youngest killers died tragically after suffering mental health issues.

Dontay West, cousin of Bailey Junior Kurariki, took his own life and died on December 18, 2017, after kissing his aunt goodnight for the last time, a coroner’s report, released today, found.

The teen – described by a family friend as a “good boy” – had been under Oranga Tamariki’s watch since birth after concerns about him being under the care of his aunt Lorraine West, Kurariki’s mum.

Kurariki – who was released from prison in May 2008 after being convicted of the manslaughter of pizza delivery man Michael Choy in 2002 – also lived at the property.

The coroner’s report said Dontay had a difficult childhood, with a history of mental health issues that required a stable home life and long-term mental health treatment.

On several occasions since February 2017, Dontay had disclosed to mental health professionals that he heard voices that commanded him to hurt himself or warned him that others would get hurt if he did not follow commands.

He also said the voices told him to fight others and that he enjoyed the adrenaline rush of fighting.

Dontay also reported problems with sleep and it was later discovered he would be out until early hours of the morning three or four nights a week.

Coroner Debra Bell was critical of Oranga Tamariki (OT) for not following up after reports on November 22, 2017, that Dontay had threatened to kill himself.

The social worker had tried to locate Dontay at home and school but was unsuccessful. There was no recorded information that OT attempted to contact or follow up with Dontay after that, the report said.

OT told the coroner it was difficult to implement a plan after being made aware of the young person’s suicidal intent without being able to locate Dontay.

“I still think some greater efforts/urgency may have been warranted given OT was aware of Dontay’s suicidal threat,” Bell said in response.

Throughout 2017, Dontay had been switching between living under his sister’s care in Ngaruawahia, in the Waikato, and West’s house in Auckland.

In October 2017, he moved back to Auckland but had been calling his sister daily and during one of those calls admitted he had not been taking his medication for the past three weeks.

“Ultimately it is a real shame Dontay returned to Auckland, but I don’t think much
could have been done to prevent that,” Bell said.

The day before Dontay took his own life, his behaviour did not seem out of the ordinary. He had spent the day at the swimming pools and had McDonald’s for dinner at home, before kissing his aunt goodnight on the cheek.

Later that night he was taken to Middlemore Hospital in an ambulance before being transferred to Starship Children’s Hospital. Despite full medical interventions, Dontay died the following afternoon.

The coroner gave her condolences to Dontay’s friends and family and acknowledged the efforts and care provided by Hauora Waikato and Whirinaki in their dealings with the teen’s care.

  5. How the hell does this sad case history that outlines failures of OT and the mental heath system justify the Police photographing kids in public who have done nothing that should have attracted their attention? Also, please note that the complaint about the Police actions specifically mentioned that the photographs were taken during daylight hours, not the early hours of the morning as stated in your comment.
