A Crown that tolerates racism and cruelty cannot be New Zealand’s head of state

Fresh from his appallingly trite podcast to reform all men, gelded Stuff Millennial columnist Glenn McConnell calls for the cancellation of the Queen because Meghan Markle was sad after doing no research on the British Royal Family, marrying into it and then feeling triggered…

Right at the start of the interview, Meghan said she was unprepared for the reality of being a working royal when she married into the family.

“I went into it naively, because I didn’t grow up watching the royal family,” she said.

“It wasn’t something that was part of conversation at home. It wasn’t something that we followed.

“I didn’t do any research. I’d never looked up my husband online. Everything I needed to know, (Harry) was telling me.

“What does it mean to be a working royal? What do you do? What does that mean?

“I didn’t fully understand what the job was, what was needed of me. There was no way to understand what the day-to-day was going to be like.”

…so the Queen needs to be cancelled because an actress who didn’t do any research at all married into the Royal Family and split it up because you know, it was hard and it made her sad not to do whatever she wanted.

In the subjective post MeToo world where insufferable Millennials get to cancel anything that triggers them, it’s looking less like progress and more like Mao’s Cultural Revolution.

To hold up an unattributed comment about the skin colour of Archie as proof positive there is rampant cross burning racism within the Royal Family and that a 1200 year legacy must be abolished because of that comment is so high pitched and hysterical only dogs can hear it.

This woke outrage overshadows Glenn’s legitimate point which is an urgent need to review our own constitutional arrangements.

I don’t care about some branding publicity spat that has been remodelled into a woke Millennial moment of truth between the Queen and Meghan, but I do care about our Constitutional arrangements.

Consider a NZ Parliament Upper House that has 50-50 representation between Maori and Pakeha. If Sovereignty was never signed away, then the Government of today has a responsibility beyond paltry compensation for past injustices , it must provide real power sharing solutions between the Crown and Māori.

Having a 50-50 Upper House with the power to delay legislation that was not in the best interests of the Nation when it comes to Treaty issues would stop Government’s from fire sales of national assets and prevent things like the Foreshore and Seabed legislation from becoming law.

An Upper House would be seen as a guardian of the Treaty for the maintenance of public well being over private gain, it would show real power sharing and for Pakeha, it would represent a political body that protect their public interests as much as Maori interests.

So let’s proceed with Constitutional amendments because they are the right thing to do, not because triggered Millennials feel sad sad.

  1. Good luck with convincing the general public to accept a 50-50 representation in an upper house scenario and you just know it would be a haven for failed politicians of all stripes to have a non-elected senate type arrangement.

  2. The senate has played a vital role in Australia in blocking unfavorable social legislation. Minorities have a great deal more influence when there is an upper house. GST was blocked in Aussie for 20 years by the senate. And when eventually implemented only passed when not applied to basic foodstuffs.

  3. Harry claimed he was left with only his inheritance to keep the wolf from the door. He failed to say this was half of £21 million
    plus £7 million from the Queen s mother. You have to feel sorry for him .
    The racism claim is being made much of because Megan claim someone asked how dark the baby would be . To me it is a legitimate question. If it was asked to limit the role he played in his royal role then it would be racist . Context is everything and often those that seek to be offended can find that offence in any comment.

  4. L0L ! – I was going to post that cringey article by Glenn McConnell but you beat me to it. Lost count of the times he said he was ‘proud’ to be this or that. I wonder if he stopped to think that when he says he’s ‘proud’ to be this race or that,…that is in fact almost inverse racism. Well bully for him. So he’s proud.

    But yes , Ive long thought by protecting the Treaty of Waitangi, we protect the assets of all New Zealanders by virtue specifically of that idea of yours Martyn, – an upper house. Whereby there is a true powerbase that compels parliament to think twice before they glibly run roughshod over our democracy like they did in Douglas’s and Richardson’s time and so many times after that.

    An upper house that would have put those greedy treasonous pigs in their place before they sold off our assets/utility’s for the lowest price to their overseas mates who then cranked the prices up for the very infrastructure that our bloody taxpayers worked hard for.

    • I stopped taking the Dom-P when their girls started running their hate on white series. Damn nuisance. I have to collect the free suburban papers down at the mall to wrap my rubbish, wipe up kiddie messes, and clean the windows. The window cleaners of London use newspapers to clean the windows – it’s the chemicals, you know.

      I stopped reading Glenn’s online piece when he referred to Megain’s revelations about the royals. They were not revelations, they were allegations, that’s all.

      Two days ago the NewYork Times published a two page list of Markle’s lies. Much more has been documented for months, if not years, allegations I prefer not to read or think about, they are so rotten and self-serving, and damaging to other good people.I think her a dangerous narcissistic nutter. The website:www.harrymarkle.wordpress is pretty concise. Yankee Wally on YouTube has much referred to the phoney pregnancy with the child known as Archie, and the use of a surrogate, and she has not not been sued for saying that over and over and over. Celt News on YouTube is dispassionate and professional – I think there are lots of others.

      Personally, I am delighted that this shabby pair are no longer head or whatever they were, of the Commonwealth Universities, which was mud in the eye for whatever serious and conscientious scholars academics are still beavering away in academia, and who do not deserve to be dragged down and trivialised by having a couple of nursery rhyme characters at their head.

        • I may be becoming a royal. Dunno. I tried morphing into a tall rich young man, and that didn’t work – and nobody believed me anyway.

          Suddenly, having not thought about it before, I see the Commonwealth as an impressive and stabilising institution – quite unique in today’s world, and possibly in itself, a positive step towards reparation for the negatives of colonialism – a norm of its time, where England was by no means the worst offender, took the first steps to abolish slavery, and paid compensation until comparatively recently.

          – That’s just off the top of my head, but I won’t accept jumped up little jerks of journalists, rubbishing a whole family lead by a harmless old granny with an ancient ill husband, just because some third rate actress with a fairly chequered sort of history, snared the dimwit.

    • It is a disgusting thing, that a man with the Scots name of ‘ Glenn McConnell ‘ ,… can be such a sell out. Oliver Cromwell would have loved him. Has he never heard of the Highland Clearances?   7. I met the Queen once. That’s Queen Elizabeth The Second of Great Britain, to be clear. There are many other queens out there squabbling over various thrones.     The Queen seemed lovely. She smiled and said a couple of words to me and everything.
    What Megan fails to comprehend, the poor American mutton, is that the royal family is a family. A family, like every other human family on earth. Wrought with troubles and joys and fraught with disaster and triumphs. There’ll be rows and shagging’s and drunkenness and delights. I mean? C’mon? Who amongst us can cast the first nasturtiums?     Personally, I think the Crown is an extraordinary family steeped in Class, passions, charm, danger and roguishness and it can only be envied and admired because anything else is merely jealousy.
