Fresh from announcing an infrastructure budget they didn’t bother costing, the crazy just gets crazier from National…

Coronavirus: National keen to charge returning Kiwis $3000 for their quarantine

Judith Collins is keen to see Kiwis returning home to New Zealand charged $3000 for their managed self-isolation or quarantine.

The National Party will announce the policy on Sunday to charge all New Zealanders entering the country the fee – around three quarters of the total cost – should the party be elected in September.

…backpackers, students and those on holiday won’t have $3000 to pay to come home on top of all the insane prices now being charged for flights!

National also intends to extend this to the 501 prisoners being returned to NZ from Australia!

I can’t imagine a more counterproductive policy!  Returning 501s being forced back to NZ under compulsion will all have great credit ratings and a $3000 debt will cement them into the world of crime!

It’s like Judith and Gerry want them to transition immediately into organised crime!

Don’t say you weren’t warned!

  1. This is so appalling. Having railed against all the NZers going overseas, including John Key’s show in a stadium, we are now saying they are not welcome home unless they pay. Worse, it is discriminatory and a breach of the rights of NZ citizens. So message from National to our whanau who live overseas, including their kids who are NZ citizens by descent : you can’t come home unless you pay. Even for a brief hello to mum and dad, or grandad and grandma over Xmas. Just remember ; all the disapora have votes in the forthcoming election.

  2. Martyn;
I note that they will not charge China for this cost or any hospital bills either as China exported the virus to the world and are responsible for their fuck-up.

So National are actually punishing Kiwis and not Chinese for having the virus eh???

The take-out from this is National is soft on China as ‘Judith Collins is in cahoots with China as she was is already involved with her family’s involvement through their ‘Orivida company’.

    National are corrupt.

    • Actually this virus has been found in coroners death reports as an unknown disease in South America and The Usa up to 9 months before it exploded in China so Maybe we should be charging Brazil Peru and The Usa .

  3. Meh. If you were stranded overseas by an ill-timed vacation during CoVID that is one thing. If you’ve been living and working overseas for the last 3+ years but now want to come back to NZ because the tides have turned and expect actual NZers to pay for it… what, NZ wasn’t good enough for you before? “You’ve made your bed, now lie in it”.

    • I agree with the sentiments of your remark. I just wonder how or where to draw the line.
e.g. The TraitorKey citizens, that basically bought a house and got citizenship and then went ‘home’ after they got a passport and Permanent residents that did likewise (under any Govt). They should DEFINITELY pay as they’re no better than a carpetbagger. I don’t blame them for doing so, if the system is dumb enough to allow them to do so, then so be it.
BUT I take your point, that NOW they want to take refugee and I agree we shouldn’t have to pay for them to IMHO ‘take the piss’.
Now Kiwis born and raised here who then go overseas for say 5-10 years, I’d feel that it would be too harsh to charge them. Though some timeframe needs to be in place. How about absent for less than 20% of the time you actually lived in NZ, or something similar. i.e. if they’ve spent way more of their life in NZ than out of it.

    • Yes. And those already here should be charged retrospectively, and if necessary, setting up a student loan type of payback scheme.

Those of us who stayed here should not be subsidising the expenses of those who had the wherewithal to travel overseas. If they could afford the airfares etc. to tootle around the globe, they could afford the lock-down expenses once back home.

    • Have to agree Nitrium.

Running back to this safe haven that was not high paying enough or too unsophisticated whenever you last paid tax here does not mean the rest of us rif raf should foot the bill. Especially if the person infected overseas goes on to cost the taxpayer here a fortune to manage it.

And we just do not have a bottomless money pit.

I’m picking it may stem the flow of expats as well. Definitely not a vote loser.

  4. Megan Woods is applauding the move and says Labour are working out a similar charge. Will you print that as well

  5. Seems this post has dated pretty quickly as apparently Labour have agreed with the National Party and will also be charging returning New Zealanders.

From the NZ Herald this afternoon: The Minister in charge of Managed Isolation and Quarantine Megan Woods is welcoming National’s support for a policy to charge returnees to New Zealand part of the costs of accommodation.

“As I have been signalling for several weeks, we believe people returning to New Zealand should assist with the considerable expense of accommodating them in managed isolation facilities,” Megan Woods said.

“National’s stated commitment to a charging regime is a good sign there will be widespread parliamentary support for such a move.

  6. Bomber will you now criticise Jacinda given she’s agreed the same.

    Judith 1, Jacinda 0

Labour get used to policy targeting the middle.

  7. I must admit I have mixed feelings about the payment issue. Certainly don’t think it is unreasonable but I would agree Martyn that the Returning 501s shouldn’t have to pay. They are not coming by choice and NZ has long held that the policy by Australia is unjust and unethical. Given that I don’t think it is right to charge them and also we should be trying our best to help them re-integrate in a situation made tougher by being torn away from friend and family support. Charging them would be counter-productive for the reasons that you outlined.

  8. Are National brain dead?

Charging Aussie deports who probably borrowed the shirts on their backs $3000 to go into quarantine? That will teach them a damned good lesson. Not sure what though. Spiteful, you bet, crime promoting, hell yes!

Is this Judith’s idea, sounds bitchy enough but otherwise Nat volk, identify the retard/s in your lot who thought this a good idea?

Please do not let these morons near government, please!

  9. From what I’ve heard or read, the vast majority of Kiwis support charging NZers for their self-isolation or quarantine, on return. Regardless of your position or argument, is it really fair to deny a Kiwi the right to return if they can’t afford the expense? Why can’t it be managed in an agreeable way, between citizen or permanent resident, and the government? Why does everything have to be yes or no, do or don’t, sweet or sour, etc. etc … especially at this time of greater need. What are we protecting, or what might we be missing? Insulation has been protective of us, but how insular do we want to become? I don’t have an answer at all, but I think it’s a question that deserves more consideration.

  11. My logic says who caused the spread of this virus????

So if it was China they need to pay reparations don’t they like Germany and Japan had to do after the second world war right?????

Place the cost at the door of the those correctly found to spread the pandemic please.

    • It’s a disease, you know germs that been living with us since time immemorial and unless anyone can prove beyond doubt China invented this disease, and I truly doubt that they did or anyone could, then give it a break.

Disease does not care about mankind’s border systems, or religions, race or ideology!

    • Well, then New Zealand should pay reparations to Samoa for the Spanish flu 100 years ago, spread there through NZ incompentence, and the measles epidemic spread from NZ to Samoa last year

And Mexico should be held culpable for the H1N1 of 2009 and the Americans for the Spanish flu, first case in Kansas.

In any case it appears the virus may not have originated in China, having being found in sewage in Brazil, Italy, late last year, and in Barcelona, Spain as early as March last year.

As for HIV —it was spread around the world by rich white europeans….we should charge them as well

  12. Remember that our Jacinda as our labour leader always said “Be Kind”.

So if this is a Labour’s stated standard’ “to be kind” then we should not fall into the poisonous vindictive pool of national Party politics as Judith Collins represents should we???

As I see this as Nationals planned way to drag Labour into their trap to be send as a ‘mean vindictive Government type’ as championed by National.

Remember how Jacinda showed so much deep human compassion with the murders at the survivors and their families connected to that Chistchurch mosque, so if Labour shows no humanity here it will show disillusionment that could give national an attack point then, saying it was all a shallow show of politics.

    DON’T BE FOOLED BY NATIONAL.

  13. I’d rather have the ubiquitous ‘hard working tax payer’ foot the bill for quarantine than pay fat cat rich types to prove their macho status sailing yatchs.
National’s added it will consider exemptions to the quarantine payments. But we all know where exceptions to rules lead.

  14. The returnee’s should pay not the current taxpayers and younger generation be forced to pay for other people’s choices to leave and return!

  15. Taranaki couple stranded in India do not meet high re-entry border criteria
    https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/300058348/taranaki-couple-stranded-in-india-do-not-meet-high-reentry-border-criteria

Presumably when this couple return as ‘essential workers’ aka the “supermarket” and “farm worker”, the current workers doing their jobs at the supermarket and farm while they went to India, will lose their jobs and make more people currently living in NZ, unemployed.

The ponzi of laughable ‘essential’ workers is unravelling… and if more and more overseas ‘essential’ workers return those that are currently employed in those jobs will be made redundant, putting more and more people living in NZ, on benefits. (Who are we kidding, most of the ‘essential’ worker jobs are so low and industry so insecure, that once they have kids they are qualified for benefits in NZ, anyway.)
