Like all political geeks, I got up at 2am yesterday morning to watch the first day of the Trump impeachment on CNN and Fox.
CNN saw it as the most devastating thing to ever occur in Western Civilisation. Fox News claimed nothing was ever wrong in the first place and Trump is possibly the most amazing human being since Jesus.
The toxic tribalism and refusal to acknowledge any wrong doing on behalf of Trump makes for a type of surreal coverage that is as entertaining as it is terrifying.
I have no doubt whatsoever that Trump is so craven, so devoid of ethics, so narcissistic in his belief of absolute power that he most certainly did demand dirt on his political opponent before handing over military aid to the Ukraine.
I am equally certain that this entire impeachment will not only fail but could inadvertently cement him a 2020 victory.
Democrats need to win Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania to shut Trump out off an Electoral College win and I can’t see how an Impeachment process that will fail in the Senate wins in those States.
I despise Trump with all my might. He is an orange fascist tumour who has manipulated cultural and economic resentment for political gain like few others in American history.
But he will win 2020 if Democrats don’t offer those who have been failed by free market globalisation a good enough reason to vote for them other than ‘you were stupid and racist to vote for Trump in the first place you dumb deplorable rednecks’.
Trump presents an image that it’s easy to eschew , no doubt about it. But it is the Democrats that are sabotaging the institution of the US presidency. How could anyone be expected to perform the duties of the president of the United States under the unmitigated destruction and compromising of their position throughout their entire term in office. The scorn that the democrat establishment are showing the electorate in how they disrespect their decision is unprecedented. And undisguised. And yes the result will undoubtably be as you predict Martyn.
But I think that televising this pantomime clarifies the motives for the impeachment. It assumes that a large proportion of the voters are not familiar with what is normal negotiation when the country spends millions or billions of aid, just like Biden boasted of himself, and can be persuaded that what Trump did in this case was unusual.
The impeachment process is not a court of law. It doesn’t have to prove wrongdoing, it just needs a majority of the Congress to vote for it. Thats a given without any suggestion of guilt in this case because there is a majority of Dems in the congress and they hate him. It’s just a matter of trying to sell justification to the American public. (We watched the latter part too). But aside from just hating him I think they are in a flat panic . They must have the combined wisdom to see how this will most likely play out; it won’t get through the senate . So I think they know that as long as he stays there Barr and the rest of the long arm of the law will eventually unearth a pandora’s box of evil doings the the Democrats under guidance of the Clintons has been involved in for decades.

Trump only got elected in the first place because the Democrats rigged the system for Clinton to win. They made the mistake of thinking the people would swallow a dead rat, Clinton, rather than let Trump take power. They got it badly wrong.
They are getting it even more wrong now. This impeachment farce is as big a circus as Russiagate was.
I think you’re right, Trump will get in again and the Democratic party is eating itself alive. It is a toxic organisation and a shadow of what it used to be. Very much like Labour and the left in NZ to be honest.
