Whistleblower review is a whitewash joke

Another week, another disappointment from this Government.

The review into whistle blower protections has provided a white washed bullshit joke.

State Service Minister Chris Hipkins ordered a review of the Protected Disclosures Act at the beginning of the year and he’s made it as meaningless as his pay offer to Teachers.

The discussion paper is so disappointing it’s not worth reading and either Chippy over rides the butt covering measures the Public Service wants established or he acquiesces to their desires to strangle off whistle blowers to protect the corruption they wish to hide.

When you consider the state housing meth hysteria, the abuse of power by the police, GCSB and SIS, the horrific manner the mentally ill are treated with, the abuse of prisoners etc etc etc, the public service want to limit any whistle blower protections as much as possible and it shows in their spineless recommendations.

Whistleblowing won’t be anonymous and the rational as to why they refuse to allow them to be anonymous is hysterically funny. The State Service is arguing that the reason why whistleblowers can’t be anonymous is because it would “reinforce the perception that speaking up is something to be feared and to be kept behind closed doors“. That’s just insanity.

They also recommend that there be no penalties for employers who punish the whistleblower and there be no protections for whistleblowers who go to the media.

So in short, these public service parasites who cause so much damage to the public want to make sure anyone brave enough in the public service who does whistleblow must be publicly outed, provided with no protections from recriminations and no protections if they go to the media.

The entire thing is a sick joke for transparency and social justice, the question is will Chippy laugh?

  1. As an employer in the PS who had to deal with a PD, the anonymity and rules around the WB’s inherent protection guided my every step. I actually saw the sense in (especially) those two principles.
Now, I consider myself to be a fair employer, and happily worked with our HR and the lawyer for the WB (who eventually came forward on their own account from the anonymity). We ensured that how we behaved and the decisions we made, had the principle of no penalties to the WB firmly in mind.
I have have a massive concern about the integrity of the PS if these changes happen. I have little confidence in the individual ability of managers to not seek (however subtle) retribution.

I can’t understand Chippy’s logic here. I mean, FFS….this is EXACTLY what a Trump move looks like. And let’s not forget, the world would (rightly) lose its collective shit if he did.
