What can one actually say about MPI that hasn’t already been said now?

Is there anything MPI can’t fuck up?

In the wake of terrible footage showing intense cruelty to farm animals, what’s MPI’s response?

MPI says it can’t legally secretly film for farm abuse

Who is MPI there for? The protection of the environment and animals that produce all this wealth or the industry players who refuse point blank to be regulated?

…in the words of the brilliant Rachel Stewart...

while we’re on the subject of MPI, I do have a few words to say. Myrtle Rust, Velvetleaf, Bonamia ostreae in flat oysters, kauri dieback, Psa in kiwifruit, herbicide-tolerant swedes causing cow deaths… the list goes on.

..and on

The ministry, in my opinion, has forged a crooked path of destruction, deceit and dim-wittedness. The fish dumping scandal, brilliantly uncovered by TV3’s Michael Morrah, is but the culmination of years of chicanery by some staff, all aided and abetted by a Government which views New Zealand as a corporation.

Another job of MPI’s is to make a serious attempt at saving the nearly extinct Maui’s dolphin. How’s that going? Well, let’s just say that commercial fishing and money have trumped any genuine attempt by MPI to take that role seriously. It delayed, denied, finally put observers on boats – like that has shown its effectiveness – and still it is alleged that dolphins get caught in nets and it goes unreported.

An investigation by German conservation group NABU International revealed MPI officials and fishermen concealed the death of a Maui’s dolphin.

The latest fiasco is around the treatment of bobby calves. It’s a perennial issue and, going by its track record of doing nothing, the public have finally woken up to the fact that MPI simply see no economic imperative to care

…it is difficult to know who is the worst public department, what with the Housing NZ meth hysteria, the cruelty of MSD and the counter-productive horror of our prison industry, but it is safe to say that MPIs spinelessness towards primary industries must surely be the most cowardly.

  1. Yes Martyn,

They can’t screw up being the second worst NZ Government agency after MBIE!!!

    Or can they?

  2. Same old story, a government department run by National Party hacks. Meaningful change will happen when the dross is cleaned out and this should happen sooner rather than later.

    • Yes labour need ageain as theyn did when David Langey took control he cleaned out the National Party hacks with his “great quango hunt” remember that?

  3. Again – make ALL senior managers reapply for jobs which have been renamed and dropped to $200 or under – and make it damn clear in the interview what being a public servant means. It is very clear that there is no truth to the ‘we have to pay these salaries or we won’t get the best people’ lie – it only attracts the greedy & aloof.
