National Party Northcote candidate plays hate card against the poor, then realises he’s played it and backtracks

The Northcote by-election looks like it is going down to the wire.

That level of pressure is starting to show when the National Party candidate accidentally plays the hate card in an interview with Newsroom today

He also suggests crime could be on the increase with housing developments going up around the Northcote shopping centre, but then back-tracks on that when asked why more crime would be the result of affordable housing.

…it’s the same script David Seymour is using in Epsom. Housing developments are demonised as dens of crime because you know, poor people are all criminals.

Melissa Lee tried the same line in the Mt Albert by-election in 2009, it seems that whenever the Right feel stressed out in an election they immediately reach for the old ‘poor-people-will-climb-into-your-window-and-rob-you’ line.

It’s sad that the pressure of this by-election is  again bringing those bigotries to the surface.

If Labour can make a serious inroad into National’s huge majority, that will be an enormous win, if Labour can do the unthinkable and actually beat National, Simon Bridges leadership will be under enormous strain.

No wonder National are starting to panic.

  1. That commercial media leak stories of why national is so underwhelming, much to there distress only confirms what we’ve known this whole time. The National Party is a motley collection of imbeciles, liers and con-artists. They had there chance when John Key argued in 2007/08 against Donald Brash false ideology and failed. #winning

  2. one suspects Labours polling is correct–when the Nat’s glorious ex leader “sirkey”–is being pressed into service to support Mr Bidois shot

    • I tried to watch that (it’s always good to know what they’re up to) but after 15 seconds it was off. A friend did watch and said it became surreal when Key pulled out his pink mobile phone. I was almost intrigued enough to watch but – nah!!

  3. National has over the last several years developed a hard meaned attitude to anyione who disagrees with their beliefs and we are now entering the stage where the National Partyn will attempt to control any party, group or council plan to run against their plans.

Hitler is not as bad as this mob when it comes to accepting others views Martyn so we are now of the belief that national will sabotage anything to get their way and wer hope that the electorate sees what they are now.

  4. I,m sure the trio of WhaleOil, Bridges and Collins will all be seeking ways to promote the National candidate but using the crime card associated with more affordable housing in the electorate seems a bit old hat. Are they running out of ideas?

    • Tom; good points – National are out of ideas clearly.

If i was a new voter, I would look at national as if they were conveying to me that they were strng bullies as this; – IS JUST HOW THEY COME OVER AS.

National need to realise that they need to become moderate and ammeinable; – but I am not sure they can due to the deep belief they have that they have the right still to be in Government.

  5. National’s attacks on Trevor Mallard; Amy Adams’ outrageous hypocrisy; Simon Bridges shooting his party in it’s collective foot…

All symptomatic of politicians desperate to remain relevant.

There is no surprise that the Nats are attacking the Coalition only seven months into their term. They cannot risk waiting for any results to flow through from the Coalition’s policies lest they be successful and popular.

If/when that happens, the Nats will be warming the Opposition benches for a long time to come…

    • Well said as usual Frank.

National are becomming desperate now after theyare targeting senior labour MPs and who next?

Perhaps Labour need to reverse the acid and direct the shoddy actions the Natz have done over the last nine yearsn as they have a graveyard of them to choose from.

I still wonder why Labour have not yet found the MBIE detailed account of the story that Matthew hooten blurbed out here on this discussion during the last days of National power during the last term 2014, when Hoooten warned the MBIE about the Minister of Transport then (Steven joyce) had made a shifty deasl with a road contractor which involved almost $100 million dollars over setting uip an illegasl contract and the roading contractor questioned why MBIE agreed to the deal????

This stuff will show that national was crooked and Joyce was their electioion manager at the time so this will make Phil Twyfords celphone call no issue by comparrision. Listen when Miscelle Boag tries to shut him up around the 27 minute and 55 seconds.

hooton‘Explosive’ is one of those words that gets kicked around in politics and political reporting to the point where it’s almost lost its meaning.

But it’s not an exaggeration to describe right wing spin doctor and self-declared National Party loyalist Matthew Hooton‘s performance on RadioLIVE this morning as incendiary. He effectively called Prime Minister John Key ‘dishonest’, said the PM’s office and chief of staff Wayne Eagleson is implicated in the Dirty Tricks scandal (viz. the SIS-Goff-OIA affair) and more, described Jason Ede’s black-ops brigade as ‘acting under orders’.

And in a fiery exchange, he described former National Party President (and present-day apologist) Michelle Boag as ‘a hack’ with ‘no political views’ who is ‘all about is defending a government that has behaved in ways that [are] literally indefensible and you know it’ …

      Listen for yourself.

UPDATE: The ‘fiery exchange’ has now been highlighted as a RadioLIVE editor’s audio pick here.

      * I’ve archived it here too (audio player below) because RadioLIVE only keeps 7 days audio available and I’ve noticed sometimes Mediaworks launders its talkback station’s audio feed when things get … contentious.

  6. It seems that whenever the Right feel stressed out in an election they immediately reach for the old ‘poor-people-will-climb-into-your-window-and-rob-you’ line.

It’s reflexive. Their inner prejudice and fear rises like bile whenever these racists feel pressured.

  7. The underclass IS going to climb into your window and do far worse than just rob you… EN MASSE. Oh, let them eat cake, you say?

  8. Really can National ever credit itself with reducing poverty let alone homelessness whilst in all the time there was a National government they resorted to denial, rejection, avoidance and naturally blame games for what has been happening right under their very noses???!!!
But then this brings up the fact there is not one credible National Party MP left in the Party. They have all tainted themselves with the ‘I am more holier than thou’ brush.
Recently Dan Bidois appeared in some video with John Key. I don’t have sound on my computer but those two looking like they were preening themselves. And Bidois seemed to be staring at Key with total rapture and obsession. He(Bidois)was nodding so frequently at his Dearest John Key words that I now call Bidois “Noddie”.
Of late however that it looks like in their utter contempt of the Coalition government that even Paula Bennett, Gerry Brownlee etc are resorting to behaving like schoolyard bullies having frequent temper tantrums and walk outs as a result. And as a result I am so over the NZ National Party and their childish behavioural problems.
May the best man win in the Northcote by-election that has cost NZ taxpayers many millions of dollars thanks to Jonathan Coleman jumping ship(the National Party Titanic)before he was pushed.
It’s a shame however National MPs just don’t know how to behave in an adult manner but then their antics are a direct reflection back upon the NZ National Party overall.
