Winston Peter’s double downs on Maori electorate race baiting – less the Emperor has no clothes and more Grandad has forgotten his robe

Hush my mouth, hot on the heels of rumours that Winston was backing down on his racist Maori Electorate referendum dog whistle, dear old Winnie has doubled down on his racist dog whistle…

Winston Peters dismisses flip-flop and says all Kiwis will vote on whether Maori seats should be abolished

A vote on a referendum to abolish the Maori seats will be for everyone “regardless of race”, says Winston Peters.

The NZ First leader has ruled out only those on the Maori roll voting in a referendum on whether to keep the seven Maori seats – a bottom-line policy announced at the weekend.

Peters said he made it “very clear” in his speech to party supporters on Sunday that this is a “vote for everybody who is over 18 years of age, who is entitled to be on the New Zealand electoral roll regardless of race”.

…that’s right folks, 85% of the population is going to decide the electoral powers of the indigenous 15%.

This isn’t democracy, it’s two hungry wolves and a lamb voting on who’s for lunch.

So what Winston is saying is that despite all his lies about the Maori electorates, he is serious about playing up to the petty bigotries of his target voters even if that means direct confrontation with Maori.

Winston is showing us all that even when caught out by his own provincial pakeha fairytales about Maori,  he’s so hell bent on being Prime Minister that he’ll tip the country into civil unrest to get it.

That’s attractive in a Game of Thrones character, not so much to be the Prime Minister of a liberal democracy.

  1. Regardless of my belief that the decision is and should only ever be one for Maori and Maori alone to make, I don’t know if I have such a dim view of the rest of NZ as to assume that it will result in the seats being abolished.

    • Today the Horowhenua Mayor Michael Feyen outed his predecessor, other councillors and the district CO as suppressing freedoms of expression and democracy and he is to be commended with a proper level of salute. With out people like Mayor Feyen attempting to release information being blocked by the CO then the whole democratic experiment fails and the treaty is dragged out. Before the autocrates where ratchet to maori – Aristocrats were ratchet to Europeans. So lm quietly confident in our ability to be the people we ought to be. Before Winston tried to pinch votes of National party railway tracks. I was all about that America’s cup dream. Can’t wait for this election to be over so we can concentrate on what maters – Defending the old mug (and abit of budget rehab, Green rush, Northland rail, ect). Everything else is just waiting.

    • +100…all Peters has asked for is a referendum….same as on the anti- smacking legislation criminalising good parents

…and his opposition to Maori seats is not something new …he has always opposed them

      • “all Peters has asked for is a referendum”

Really, RB? Well you NZ Firsters need to think this through. By what logic or concept of justice do you think the MAJORITY should decide on the rights of a MINORITY?

Because if you believe in the rule of the majority, without limitations, then you believe in the rule of tyranny by the majority.

A lot of injustice has been perpetuated by The Majority when it indulges hate and bigotry against a minority.

Check your history. See what happened to jews in Germany in the 1930s and 40s.

Check to see what’s happening to gypsies in Europe NOW.

If you think rule by the majority is still a good idea, then you privileged indeed.

        • so you advocate Dictatorship by ‘The Chosen’ ones? ( as opposed to Democracy by the majority)

…chosen by whom?…the self- appointed narcissistic chosen ? ….chosen by God?….chosen by the 1% wealthy oligarchy?

        • the Necons certainly dont believe in democracy or Democracy !

…the Neocons believe in Exceptionalism…their right to create wars in other countries, to destabilise and get rid of democratically elected leaders like Assad in Syria and overthrow Gaddafi (Libya)and Saddam Hussein ( Iraq)
…which has created the rise of ISIS and the current refugee crisis in Europe .

…the Neocons also subvert Democracy and democracy in the USA and go against the wishes of the American people

…really there is very little difference between ‘The Chosen’ and the ‘Master Race’…. Democracy and democracy is anathema to both

          ‘Neocons return’

Like a bad cold you can’t shake, the neocons are back – and they are back with a vengeance. Long associated with the extremist wing of the GOP and tied with catastrophic policy failures, they have now found themselves being embraced by the Democrats and the liberal media. It would seem being anti-Russia attracts strange bedfellows.

  2. Winston Peters plays to and appeals to the bigots in NZ. His mentor Muldoon taught his protege` well, when it comes to divisive tactics!

  3. Seen THIS Martyn?

Any other NZ political party leaders talking about taking on the Aussie banks?

    https://www.interest.co.nz/business/88672/nz-firsts-winston-peters-blames-subservient-puppetized-nz-politicians-lack-probe-nz

“NZ First’s Winston Peters blames ‘subservient puppetized NZ politicians’ for the lack of a probe into the NZ banking system.

Says Aussie banks are ‘like a hole in the hull of the NZ economy’.”

  4. This must surely rule him out of a coalition with Labour as Labour would never accept this as a bottom line. Essentially a vote of NZ First is now a vote for National

  5. I can’t see how New Zealand First can be in coalition with any other party than National, now that it has made a referendum one of its core electoral platforms. Neither Labour nor the Greens would accept such a referendum.

  6. NZ First will gain approx 17% +of votes and form an alliance with National.
The referendum is not a bottom line, but at 20% of votes NZF I expect it to be held.
I suspect that we will 1/ retain Maori seats 2/ lower the number of electoral seats.

  7. “…that’s right folks, 85% of the population is going to decide the electoral powers of the indigenous 15%”

To be fair, this is factually how democracy works (and the only way it can work). We all have to stomach whatever the “popular vote” produces. See Donald Trump.
It’s a key reason why I don’t really subscribe to democracy any more. IMO it’s a system designed BY the elites FOR the elites that is generally nothing but a false “left”, “right” or “center” choice (usually defined by meaningless pandering to voters via various “wedge issues”) and so ensuring said elites aren’t hung from lamp posts every so often in the revolutions we deserve (and crave?).
