Labour: 100 years old with barely any presence

Well it’s a 100 years of Labour and what can one say? A political movement that began with thunder manages to barely cause a fart these days.

Sure there is magic in its past…

…and things to celebrate…

…but things post the radical right wing reforms of the 80s and Helen Clark’s wasted 9 years in Parliament (which over saw the largest land confiscation ever in NZs history, saw inequality remain high, saw more environmental damage and also saw the terror raids that didn’t have any terrorism) means that Labour at 100 is far more like this…

…let’s hope as the world turns to the left for radical solutions that Labour’s new leadership team finds the courage of their past to do something decisive for their present and future.

  1. Nothing on the scale of the key National government who have done so much worse in 8 years.

Lets hope so, but imo I wouldn’t expect too radical at this stage, can’t scare the horses.

  2. @ words – I think the horses are already starting to bolt….

On Labour – Not a sound due to, in big part, to ‘our owned MSM’

    – Look what happen to Mana/internet party last election – crucified.
The MSM spread the ‘fear’ very well.
No party can get a look in – just the way National wants it’ – so unless you have access to Internet for an alternative view, what the MSM feeds people is usually pro-Right wing.

It is SAD that so much of who is in government is based on the garbage the MSM supply us.

The Herald gave John Key 9/10 iin some stupid ‘rate the POLITICAN’ article ( based on the Heralds opinion) – This rating really sums up the entire state of the New Zealand MSM at the moment. FFS.

Sorry labour without being seen or heard, in a good light, you will get nowhere fast. Shame because we you to be part of the next Government!

    • Yes agreed. and not just Mana/Internet, I don’t think I have witnessed a political leader and party come under such a disgustingly sustained viscous attack like the msm did to David Cunliffe and Labour. All credit to the character and strength of David Cunliffe that he is still standing and is still doing a great job despite the msm and the aholes within Labour that trampled over his mandate after the election. Glad to see some have now been pulled into line and others are leaving. David Shearer imo, needs to go. Same thing is happening to Corbyn in the UK, but in his case, I’m positive he will win.

The Herald and tv 3’s odious Patrick Gower et al have launched a character assassination crusade against Little in a desperate attempt to discredit Labour’s announcements on housing, which as we all know,(but National cannot admit to), is one of National’s greatest weaknesses.

i don’t know how Labour and the opposition parties are going to tackle National’s msm, they won’t be given a fair go. I’m a big fan of Martyn’s current affairs show, but it’s not enough, and it needs to be more mainstream.

Without Labour there is no change of government, that’s fact.

  3. Agreed, Martyn.

However, there are no indications that the necessary changes will be forthcoming. Labour is still characterised by deceit, betrayal and cowardice.

  4. Yes martyn,

Labour need again to reconnect with the people as they are still not doing this.

Like National our NGO have sent many emails to labour and national MPs and virtually no response from either at all expect a couple from the local MP and some subjects sent specifically to the Minster who has that Portfolio even doesn’t respond as he/she is supposed to do so there needs to be a systemic change dramatically so LISTEN UP LABOUR RETURN TO HELEN CRARK STYLE GOVERNMENCE AS THEYB ALWAYSD RESPONDED BUT YOURS DONT!!!!!

  5. Labours not 100 its 32!!

Horrorfied that this mob in Parliament would dare defecate on the legacy of Kirk and Savage by connecting them to a party like neo-labour

Those men cared about the people of this country and actively sought to help them and were in total solidarity with the workers neo-labour is the opposite of any of that, they need to hurry up and change the name and stop disrespecting the historic labour party by using its name mana has more in common with labpur than neolabour

    • Rubbish. It’s a 100 years of Labour, good and bad. You can’t separate it because you don’t like it.

  6. The Labour party is offering New Zealanders a birthday present

To add to Labour’s announcement of a substantial increase in much needed emergency housing……

Labour would stop state house sell-off, scrap Housing NZ payments to Govt

Housing New Zealand is being used as a “cash cow” and should not have to pay tens of millions of dollars in dividends to the Government each year, Labour leader Andrew Little says.

At Labour’s centennial conference in Wellington, Little announced his party would abolish the requirement for Housing NZ to pay a dividend to the Government each year, instead focusing solely on providing enough state houses.

Last September, it was revealed Housing NZ would pay the Government a $118 million dividend for the 2015/16 financial year – the largest in five years.

Little said the Government was using the state house provider as a “cash cow”, when it should be focused on helping people in need.

“National has used Housing NZ to profit from the most vulnerable and turned it into a glorified property management company.”

The Government had received $664 million in dividends from Housing NZ while only putting in $141 million, Little claimed.

Changing Housing NZ into a public service, rather than a corporation, would give the organisation more money to ensure existing state houses were warm and dry, while building more houses to meet demand.

Frontline staff cut by the Government would be brought back, while waitlists and eligibility assessments would be handled by a new housing ministry, rather than the Ministry of Social Development.

    ‘FOCUS ON PEOPLE, NOT PROFITS’

Little said Labour would stop the Government’s sell-off of state houses and “substantially increase” the number of available state houses.

“Ensuring that Housing NZ focuses on people, not profits, is an essential part in addressing the housing crisis,” he said.

The announcement is the second in a series of housing policies from Labour this week, as the party puts pressure on the Government over rising levels of homelessness and skyrocketing house prices.

On Thursday, Little announced a $60 million package for emergency housing, which he said would put a roof over the heads of more than 5000 homeless people each year.

Another, major housing policy from Labour will be announced at an event in Auckland on Sunday afternoon.

  7. Labour needs to stand up and step up to the plate, and start throwing its weight around a bit more, otherwise, guess who gets another term through using their dirty politics games. Labour, and the other opposition parties, need to stand together, challenge Key and his National government on the misconduct, misleading and misrepresentation this smear campaigning and negative politics party for a government we have, by seriously holding National accountable for their actions.
If Andrew Little cannot push himself and his party forward, if Labour continues to rely on putting up with the mud slinging smearing being put forward by a cowardly government who relys on dishonesty and corruption, then Little should resign and nominate someone who can provide a leadership with action.
Micheal Savage and Norman Kirk would both be disgusted at how todays Labour party is lacking in fighting back at Key and his corporate-driven government.
Things need to change, the people want a change, and now is the time for Labour to stand up and fight for that change!
God forbid, if National gets in again.

  8. I heard on the news that they want to return Housing NZ into a kind of state agency or ministry, and abolish the Corporation model that has apparently failed. They have also at least committed to build more state housing, rather than do what the Nats have been busy doing, selling stock, and handing some over to NGO social housing providers.

So that is a positive, although more homes than a thousand a year are needed.

The more significant announcement will come tomorrow, so I hear, and that will show how serious Labour is in bringing political change for the housing market, to facilitate construction and more affordability.

Unless they set clear signals that they will also put constraints on immigration, it will likely help little to provide for more affordable housing. The challenge is huge as it is, because the Nats and Key brought is into a real dilemma, as the high house prices are here to stay, because no government will do things to crash house prices. That would turn so many property owners against them, it would end such a government very quickly.

Thanks Nats and Key for this irresponsible mismanagement of the housing and immigration portfolios.
