TVNZ Breakfast and the real reason Hilary left

I think if the rumours are true, losing Nadine Chalmers-Ross from Breakfast will be a real loss. She is far more intelligent a host than she’s ever been allowed to be, but rooted to the spot by Rawden Christie has sadly tarred her with the same brush.

TVNZ Breakfast has an opportunity to become appointment viewing only if there is aone giant kick up its backside. What’s finally motivated TVNZ Executives to get off their bums and start trying to think outside the square was the terrifying speed with which Paul Henry had eroded their ratings.

Say what you like about Paul Henry, but he is a crafted broadcaster who makes the show watchable when he isn’t being a raving right wing fanatic. Sadly that’s not often.

As the state broadcaster, TVNZ has an obligation to put something genuine on for Breakfast, the soft news prep boy bullshit that Rawden is a master of is as dull and stale as last decades newspaper. I’ve watched Breakfast ion TVNZ in the past, and it’s as enjoyable as slamming my hand in a car door. It’s less Morning Report and more the Edge radio show, a plastic banal wasteland that only the terribly bored would ever watch.

A possible teaming up of Hilary Barry and  Jack Tame would not only be a generation shift away from the bloody boomers towards Gen Xers finally getting a say, but I think it could end the soft news pap and put together something that is entertaining AND informative AND with an edge.

Barry and Tame aren’t idiots, they are well educated and intelligent, if they are given the freedom to do something a bit different, TVNZ Breakfast will make an impact.

As for the real reason Hillary left TV3, apparently it was all to do with having to put up with the host of the show.

  1. I’ve watched Breakfast ion TVNZ in the past, and it’s as enjoyable as slamming my hand in a car door. It’s less Morning Report and more the Edge radio show, a plastic banal wasteland that only the terribly bored would ever watch.

I concur, Martyn. On the odd occassion I’ve watched it, I found it to be so tedious and moronic that I wondered if it was geared toward twelve year olds. (No offense intended to twelve year olds.)

Does TVNZ think that it’s audience consist of Village Idiots from all over the country?

All I can say is, thank you god-of-broadcasting for Radio NZ; thank you.

    • Does TVNZ think that it’s audience consist of Village Idiots from all over the country?

Obviously it does, just look at its programming. TV1 is just a shadow of what it once was. Bring it back to Avalon, when TV1 was a public service national broadcaster. A time that they weren’t scared to take on politicians and other power brokers.

  2. “Does TVNZ think that it’s audience consist of Village Idiots from all over the country?”

YES they do, TVNZ are contemptuous.

  3. I’ve never liked Breakfast tv anyway, doesn’t matter who presents it, I’d rather watch less tv than more.

  4. I had the pleasure driving to work a couple of months ago, of listening to Hillary Barry defending a pedophile on the Henry breakfast show. Perhaps they didn’t get on because they are both fanatics, one of the left the other of the right.

    • Hilary has always toed National party line PEVANS, and I wouldnt say Henry is of the left, surely you jest, right?

  5. Our TV networks continually make bad decisions – just look at the new channel Bravo ( voted in the top 10 worst channels in America ) whats up with that! – sadly I believe there was better content when New Zealand had only 2 channels. That’s showing my age!

  6. This is blue TVNZ we are talking about here, the station that puts a racist redneck on at 7pm every night, and allows him to cut loose with whatever worthless opinion he feels like sharing.
I wouldn’t get my hopes up too much for an improvement

  7. Indeed, I hate to say it, as I totally dislike Paul Henry and his partisan way of broadcasting, but ‘Breakfast’ has been so dull and giggly silly stuff, it was unwatchable to me.

I do also not really like Paul Henry Breakfast, but one must admit, it has a bit more “life” than “Breakfast” does.

So I am glad both of them are going, both presenters that we still have, and I think that it is true, that Hillary was offered a job at TVNZ, most likely on a revamped ‘Breakfast’ program, perhaps with Jack Tame.

If they are given freedom to use their skills, we may finally have a valid, worth to watch competition to Mr Henry and his co presenters.

Let us get back to reporting on stuff, such as Morning Report does on the radio, that is real news, what really matter, and guests with competence and education, who can contribute intelligent stuff in discussions and interviews.

Stop this mellow, soft touch interviewing of the PM every week and present him with some real hard questions, thanks, that is where they are lacking, both on TV One and TV3.

  8. Nadine Chalmers-Ross was good in the finance spot (not a real expert but since she was only required to put the mainsteam view, she didn’t need to be). She doesn’t have the warmth required for cuddly daytime tv. She would be good in another vehicle with a more serious approach. I’m surprised Rawden lasted as long as he did. I assumed it was because the audience at that time of day really is stupid.

  9. “Rawden Christie has sadly tarred her with the same brush.”

Yes Martyn, and can you see the likeness with Rawden’s grin it is very similar to John Key’s isn’t it strangely, perhaps another clone shipped in from Planet key?

I don’t watch CH one or three to get confronted by dribble anymore.

RNZ then switch to RT and the blogs.
