Evans is clever to leverage this high profile crowdfunding effort to draw attention to the plight of those is Fiji and elsewhere suffering the effects of climate change they have done little to cause. However, I hope the crowdfunding campaign itself is not being under-rated. For me it was an inspiring example of privatization being reversed by large-scale collective action, pooling the generosity of many small contributions.
Could we buy back our power companies and other privatized assets the same way? Sure, it sucks that we should have to, but how exciting that it might be possible! The real challenge of course is to create stewardship models for these re-collectivized commons that can effectively prevent them being privatized all over again, and to apply those models to other commons currently at risk of privatization.
