NewsHub – review

It hasn’t started well. MediaWorks deceptively turned their previous radio live twitter account into NewsHubs Twitter account to inflate the popularity of NewsHub. Some cried this was just rebranding, bullshit, it was an attempt t make NewsHub look far more popular than it is.

Set:

I’ll give them this – the set is far better. It looks exactly like the BBC set. Very clean. Good change.

Hosts:

Hillary and Mike are he two best newsreaders in NZ – they are on Fire.

Content:

First story claims there is a tolerance level of cannabis coming into the country by Corrections. Seeing as there is a drought of cannabis in Auckland at the moment, many viewers would be cheering this.

Second story is on the 3 kings property development.

Third story is on the new rising immigration rates.

Fourth story is a car accident.

Fifth story was a once over lightly piece on  Police chasing young people to death that didn’t question the policy once.

Sixth story – a nothing story about the bloody flag that allows Paddy Gower to look employed.

Seventh story – lightening strike in Sydney. No mention about the climate change creating these kind of storms.

Eighth story – Euthanasia for those who don’t like having to be reliant on others.

Ninth story – Labour’s free education policy

Tenth story – Madness in Syria.

Eleventh story – Kiwis might lose health care in Britain.

There was more news but I was bored.

Conclusion:

Very little has actually changed if you are watching it from home. Slightly better set, the two best News readers in the industry, same once over lightly news – nothings really changed. The only real change is the news app they’ve released. Other than that NewsHub is just a cost cutting measure by MediaWorks to bring all their news into one  group.

How this justifies killing off Campbell Live or 3D isn’t clear. Can’t see this being the game changer MediaWorks are desperate f0r.

  1. If you scroll down Newshubs Twitter account you’ll find this :http://newshub.centerprise.co.uk

And links to what looks like a fake BBC websites as well some writs in Asian.

The Twitter account looks like it has been active for over a year.

It’s very strange taking over what looks to be a spam account when Twitter accounts are so easy to set up.

Some people just have to much money

  2. For the first time in months I checked Paddy Gower’s reporting to see what he had to say about Labour’s free university fees. He called it a ‘bribe’.

I guess all policies could be termed ‘bribes’, but that’s pretty ignorant.

That’ll be the last time I check Paddy for another few months. He’s good for a laugh though.

TV3 are shit. Shit in its most ideological form.

  3. I think the new format looks good. One thing is the studio shots look way better now they are in HD, noticed it on PH too looks very crisp particularly when you compare it to OneNews picture quality. One thing I did notice was the news updates during the evening where still in SD??

  4. They all get their international news from the same sources, so changing the setting in the studio and offering a new app does not change the so-called “news” that get selected on infotainment value basis.

The local news are gathered and presented by the same staff, who are journo grads with desperate ambitions to stay employed, as Mediaworks pays some just above the minimum wage, I heard. So they will do as told and report the same kind of “news” as we have been getting before, tinted with Dirty Politics.

The newsreaders are just that, and I am struggling to find them “hot”, they just maintain a dignified composure and offer the odd smile, but they are only meant to read out the news that other staff composed and prepared for them to read.

But this is the trend, dressing up things, more hip of an image, some modern furniture and graphics, the odd entertaining joke, more quick, brief, poorly analysed bits of “news” and overall increasing shallowness.

Welcome to the future of boredcasting.

  5. Can’t be bothered with TV3 – last thing I watched was that weird cooking show – funny as a pathology. Web is faster and more reliable & One is excrable.
