The genius who forged such a unique identity in music, fashion, art and sexuality has died.

Bowie’s impact on Western Culture puts him in a  league few manage. His role in shaping our perception through culture was as big a leap for humankind as Neil Armstrong managed.

Ziggy has become stardust.

Bowie show in Auckland at Western Springs, 1983

We first lost Lemmy and now David – it is a sorry start to the year in music.

In an irony Bowie’s sense of humour would appreciate, this was Page C3 of today’s NYT in print: “It’s a good time to be David Bowie.”

  1. David Bowie, the star then, the star now, the star forever. He made it OK to be yourself and to be different.

Shine on Starman. Fly high with Major Tom. RIP.

  2. RIP David Bowie!

Yes, what a sad day, and a sad evening last night. At 69 years David Bowie passed away far too early, I feel. Sadly cancer claimed his life.

Although I was never really a Bowie “fan”, his music was popular and typical throughout the 1970s and 1980s, and his wide variety of songs were part of my earlier life.

He has certainly and profoundly influenced the music and art scenes throughout the western and also other parts of the world, and will be missed, yet well remembered.

Again, we are sent an early reminder this year, that nothing lasts forever, that life is as finite as many other things, and that we should therefore value every breath we can take, every day, week and month we have, to take actions that may lead society and the whole world to a better future.

I observe though, that awareness of what really matters seems to be on the wane among large sections of modern society, where all that counts is the instant here and now, and what we can “get out of it”, no matter the consequences.

I have listened to Radio NZ and some other stations and appreciate that Bowie’s music is played today, in remembrance, that is a good way to remember the talent and hero, who during his creative life also visited New Zealand.

This is an opportunity to reflect, to reflect on Bowie and his work, but also other matters.

    Thanks for this post, TDB.
