Yay – our free trade deal that we are currently bribing a Saudi business man to try and con through won’t be impacted even though Saudi Arabia just executed 47 people in a day – isn’t that great news everyone?

Middle East trade deal won’t be scuppered by political unrest – MFAT
Turmoil in the Middle East resulting in several Gulf States cutting diplomatic ties with Iran won’t have any effect on New Zealand reaching a free trade deal in the region, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Negotiations on a free trade agreement between New Zealand and the Gulf Cooperation Council were concluded in October 2009 but since then the GCC has suspended all free trade processes.

“We have made it clear to the Gulf Cooperation Council the importance that New Zealand attaches to finalising the agreement,” a spokesman for MFAT said.

Thank goodness the millions we are paying in bribes and the barbaric mass executions won’t stop our march towards selling human rights abuses meat.

  1. If the Devil himself was offering a free trade deal the morally and ethically bankrupt Key government would sign in a heartbeat!

  2. Yes Key & Co will deal with anyone for a lousy buck dragging us all down with his regime, so it’s time to cull the natZ political cancer rot out of our lives, and 2016 is the year we hope all opposition parties show some moral leadership that this NatZ groupies don’t have any purchase with any more.

  3. The good news is that the Saudi Death machine is burning the candle at both ends. They’re pumping oil like teen Schwarzenegger pumped iron to try and cripple Russia and Iran while also crimping the American shale boom, hoping they can take the pain longer than anyone else. Unfortunately, their crypto-fascist oligarchy has expensive tastes, and because they like other people to do their fighting for them, their armed forces are very merc heavy.

Their increasingly expensive campaign in Yemen is flatlining, and the casualties that their merc forces seems to have made them a little gun shy. If they hadn’t sent so much of their US made ordnance to Al Nusra & friends their logistics would be holding out, but they’ve had to bomb and shell more than they counted on because their hired infantry aren’t advancing so much now that they’ve seen their buddies getting slotted by the Houthis, who were supposed to have been a pushover. That means buying more stuff from the Americans, who have slowly started to realise that SA’s hyper pumping of oil is designed to hurt their industry too.

This is a military which felt pretty tough a couple years back when they rolled into Bahrain to slaughter unarmed Shiite protesters for embarrassing their elite during the Grand Prix, but they don’t fancy it so much now that they’re catching bullets from armed Shiites to protect the fortunes of whisky drinking Salafists. Russia and Iran are well accustomed to weathering economic storms and spending accordingly. The house of Saud is not. Soon they will have to choose; cut their luxury spending? Cut the line of supply to their embattled proxies in Syria? Admit defeat and cut oil production to bring prices back up, knowing that Russia, Iran and the USA will benefit while knowing the strategy failed?

Their 34 nation alliance against ‘terrorism’ (read: Shiite tribes) is the solution they’ve settled on to head off this choice, but the allied forces they’ve gulled into joining them in Yemen so far have performed poorly, and are still reliant on Saudi money being poured into the sand.

I’d be surprised if there’s much left in the piggy (couldn’t resist) bank for luxury imports of NZ products by the time the dust settles on their current two front war in Syria and Yemen. It’s also worth noting that while Hezbollah have stepped up their support of Assad, Iran’s forces have drawn down. My pick is that Putin, Assad, and Qassem Soleimani are preparing to use Iranian forces to exhaust them with a third front elsewhere. Watch for an Iranian response as Saudi proxies in Afghanistan move to exploit NATO’s withdrawal.

  4. a short history of labour party principles in action:

    shearer today:..’a trade deal..?..no worries..!’..

    shearer (late 1930’s)..’jews..?..what jews..?..’

  5. NZ should up sticks and leave the US Neocons and the other Five Eyes partners to their hypocritical defense of the Saudi’s, Turkey, Israel, etc in the growing chaos that is the Middle East. Even Obama the “most powerful man in the world” is unable to control his hidden puppeteers. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article43866.htm
because the doomed US petro-dollar is dependant on Saudi and Israeli support to remain the reserve currency. Ever notice how many ex-western-bankers lead or control the governments of the USA’s puppet states like Ukraine, Australia, New Zealand the EU, The UK (Mark Carney). I am sure there are more.
