‘Today’s release of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement text ends the farcical situation where governments were touting the benefits for the nation with no prospect of any independent assessment to contradict them,’ said University of Auckland law Professor Jane Kelsey.

It is not clear whether this will also start the 90-day countdown before President Obama is allowed to sign the agreement under US law, or whether any of the other countries would sign unilaterally before the US does.

But, Professor Kelsey points out, ‘the legal text is not enough on its own. We need to see the background documents that help make sense of the text, but the parties have vowed to keep secret for effectively another six years.’

‘We also need the various analyses the New Zealand government has relied on when talking up the benefits and playing down the costs. They have been coy about who has done this work, especially the projections of $2.7b benefits for the economy, and stalled on Official Information Act requests to release them, despite the High Court’s rebuke last month’.

A further statement relating to the content of the text will be released later tonight.

  1. Why do you need the background documents? Do you need the background documents for every single international treaty to understand it? I think I can understand the point of the United Nations without seeing the background documents behind it’s inception?

    • And you trust the UN – Gosman ? How much do they pay you ?
Have you heard of Rosa Koire and Chris Hedges ?
Have you heard of corporate greed at all costs and a legal tribunal that will,
most likely, always judge on the side of these same greedy and unethical mega-corporations ? ? These pro – tppa legal tribunals are set up by the very criminals that they will be judged. We will likely , ALSO, get sued for their proposed future lost profits, if TPPA passes, wait and see.
I’ll scratch your back if your scratch mine.
With Tppa, they will win and win over and over and we and the workers and the environment and the seniors and those disabled etc. will loose big time. Watch our food and dairy prices go up if tppa passes as well
      as medications.

Thanks ! Jane for all your efforts and information and helping us learn about the train wreck – tppa.
If obama and donkey are for it, then it must be a mistake and bad for the people and the environment. Good for corporations, but bad for the rest.

    • Why not, Gosman?

      What is their to hide?

I thought you were all for open and transparent government?

Don’t forget that those TPPA documents belong to us, the taxpayer. We paid for them. We have a right to see what our taxes bought.

      Don’t you think?

Or is (your) government independent of the people who elected and paid for them?

      Your call.

  2. Hope the text shows up what we already know – all about corporate greed.
Jane I Will be interested in what you have to say on the 14th, at the protest march.

  3. New Zealand Centre for Political research, Muriel Newman writes more secrets from the government .
The government has granted IWI the rights over fresh water in response to iwi request/demands as a right under treaty of Waitangi, the article states that moari supports national and keeps them in power. The Treaty has no power to grant anymore rights since 2008 but they are doing so anyway.
Iwi want the rights to transfer water for profit.

So does that mean they will be able to sell our fresh water to overseas companies ,is this why national is in agreement.
Read the full article and see more secretcy , no public input.
Maybe Iwi could explain what they will do with their rights to own the water, sometimes maori do a better job than governments, but this is nor right ,water is essential to everyone and it states in law no one owns water. What is Key up to now?this article is in Wake up New Zealand today.
