Headline: More questions for Rennie and Rebstock

The flawed inquiry into the leak of a Ministry of Foreign Affairs report last year is leading to more questions for State Services Commissioner Iain Rennie and its author Paula Rebstock, Labour’s State Services spokesperson Maryan Street says.

“The involvement of the Ombudsman will force Iain Rennie and Paula Rebstock to account for their actions and explain their conduct during the much criticised inquiry.

“The report was conducted in an offensive manner, contained factual errors, found the leak had come from the State Services Commissioner’s own office and was released after Parliament had risen for the Christmas break in an attempt to bury its findings.

“In the process, the reputations of two men who had served New Zealand consistently well through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for many years, were besmirched. There were serious consequences for one of them who is continuing his career in another part of the public service.

“It should not fall to a long-serving senior official to have to pursue natural justice through the Ombudsman when the State Services Commission should have been expected to get it right in the first place,” Maryan Street says.
