Headline: National's tax dodge

National’s insistence that it is cracking down on tax dodgers is little more than a bit of election year chest beating, Labour Leader David Cunliffe says.

“Revenue Minister Todd McClay surely doesn’t believe collecting $100 million of an estimated $7.3 billion a year in unpaid tax proves the Government is playing hardball.

“The problem is far deeper and more systemic than National is willing to confront.

“Certainly illegal tax evasion needs to be dealt with – people not paying their share place an increased burden on every other hardworking, tax-paying New Zealander – but that is only part a much wider problem.

“Tax avoidance across the board is the genie in the bottle. And that has got to be stopped if we want we are to have a fair and decent society where everyone gets a fair go and everyone pays their fair share.

“It’s also the reason why Labour will introduce a capital gains tax and stop the tax subsidies to speculators who are locking young Kiwis out of their first homes.

“We will also reform the taxation around trusts, so they can’t be used as money go rounds for the wealthy and their accountants, and ensure more fairness between those at the top, middle and the bottom of the income scale through income tax reform.

“National is still protecting its rich mates. New Zealanders deserve better,” David Cunliffe said.

  1. If beneficiaries owed this much money the National government would be pulling out all the stops to get the money back. Obviously this government regards tax dodging/evasion as a much less serious matter than benefit fraud, even though benefit fraud is only a pittance by comparison.

    • There’s a huge difference between so called “avoidance” or “evasion” – where I get to keep my own damn money – and the dole or DPB or super, where bludgers get to keep my own damn money

Key understands the difference, and knows that Kiwis tolerance for bludgers has well-nigh run out!

      • The main difference is that when you do it, you call it avoidance, and when anyone else less advantaged than you does it, you call it dodging or evasion. The less advantaged don’t have the means of dodging tax like you do – alcohol and holidays dressed up as business expenses, trust accounts, offshore bank accounts. Key understands nothing of what low income New Zealanders go through and neither do you because you are solely concerned with getting all the crumbs out of the trough, regardless of whether you need them or not.

        • As opposed to the left who think they know what people need or not and will damn well tell people what that is and try and force it upon them as well.

      • there is no difference theft is theft you are arguing somehow your above the law you are NOT!
wage earners pay tax every week
you sir are the b lugger you drive on the roads use public services
you are ones who need prison theft is theft one law for all!

  2. The only way to stop tax avoidance is to close tax loop holes and make the Tax system as simple as possible. Left wingers don’t like that as they like to use the tax system to try and encourage people to do things that they deem socially desirable. In short this is just more bluster from Labour with no substance. Unless they were serious about telling Facebook and Google to go someplace else. Please let them do that.
