Rail electrification- Labour tick . City rail link – National fail

Auckland needs the government to commit to early funding for the city rail link to make electrification of the rail line as effective as it can be, says Labours Transport Spokesperson Darien Fenton.

“Today’s act of switching on the electrification at Britomart is a great milestone, but the Government’s refusal to fund the city rail link until 2020 will hold back the development of our largest city and keep Auckland gridlocked.

“The Government turned up to celebrate the electrification today, despite its opposition at the time. However they remain out of touch with Aucklanders and on the wrong side of public opinion on the city rail link.

“The city rail link will enable the number of trains to double, ease congestion and will put Auckland on track for a world class transport system.

“It was a Labour government that initiated the electrification and double tracking of Auckland rail .It will take a Labour government to get the city rail link underway.”
