Headline: National would be best to pick up Labour’s policy

A denied Official Information Act request is the strongest hint yet that the Government will announce a package aimed at new parents in the upcoming budget despite slapping down similar policy from Labour, says Labour’s spokesperson for Children, Jacinda Ardern

“There is a mountain of evidence that we need to focus on children’s early years and give parents greater support when their baby arrives.

“Labour understands that and has responded to it with its Best Start package. Not only does this policy extend paid parental leave to 26 weeks, it provides support for the 60 per cent of families who don’t receive paid parental leave.

“Tellingly, responses to OIA questions about what assistance the Government might be considering were refused on the grounds of being ‘budget sensitive’. This is the strongest indication yet that the Government is about to succumb to the wave of pressure in this area.

“If National really wants to make a difference it can’t just tinker around the edge.

“If it is bold action the Government is after, it should let Sue Moroney’s paid parental leave bill pass, and pick up our Best Start package.

“Those are policies that will make the difference children and their families need.”
